The on-screen keyboard is a godsend.

When I'm not playing video games or pushing through school, I like to enjoy some peace of mind with a little skateboarding. Having been skating for about 10 years now, I can say I've had a fair share of injuries. Yesterday I managed to rack up another one by taking a nice little spill and hyper-extending my first two fingers of my left hand. They're so swollen I can't even assume proper WASD position!

At first I was bummed since I couldn't relax and game at all. Then the idea of the on-screen keyboard came to mind. Obviously, it's not very practical for fast response action or shooters, but I figured it would settle just fine if I were to play any kind of turn-based RPG. It's actually very relaxing to sit back and play Chrono Trigger on my SNES emulator with nothing but a mouse! It also proved effective while playing particular MMOs with a lot of pointing and clicking, since the keyboard is mostly used for hotkey purposes.

So has anyone else ever used the OSK? It really is a life saver!

That's one way of doing it, and a pretty good idea at that. You also might be able to flip your mouse to use with the left hand and then adapt using your right for WASD while using your ring and pinky for mouse buttons. there is also a slightly more simple option of just learning WASD via your ring and pinky finger. It sounds pretty cumbersome and probably not very comfortable but it might work. If not then you got a good thing going with your emulator and your OSK.

Hope ya have a speedy and full recovery :)

You know I did at first try and flip-flop my mouse, but it was just a little too uncomfortable for my tastes. I'm hoping the swelling at least goes down in a matter of days so I can take this stupid splint off and get back to Mass Effect 2.

And thanks for the kind words. It's not all that painful, just obnoxiously swollen!

I used it when my keyboard broke and needed to find something on the Internet, very awesome invention.

Off Topic: If you want games that only need a mouse to control, I recommend the old RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1 & 2 and the likes)(only counts if you haven't played them before). They may be hard to get into but are worthy. Also, hope you get well soon!

Diablo and Warcraft series are also fairly playable with the mouse, as is just about any RTS but that gets a little old after awhile.

Funny you should mention Baldur's Gate, a buddy of mine let me borrow an old copy of his recently. I haven't played it yet, but I've heard many good things. And right now, I could use a good game with total mouse control.

Oh and might I add, it's nice to meet some people online with a little courtesy :).

Meh it's just a good day for me and it wouldn't be cool to pick on someone with busted fingers. J/K I dunno I guess I think the internet is a bit of a crappy place, and usually I try to make it a little better for people, most of the time if I offend someone it isn't on purpose and I'm hoping people pick up on that and start themselves. Other than that I'm Canadian so it is pretty much beaten into me by the polar bears and Eskimos.

Do let me know how Baldur's Gate is, somehow I missed that series.

I agree, the lack of etiquette on the interwebs really sucks for the most part. I really love the abundance of intelligence that floats around The Escapist, though :).

And alright, I'll be sure to share my feedback. It's an RTS, right? I haven't played one in ages.

I think it's pretty handy, it's quite good to use if you have a touch screen too, like the Hospital I work at.

It's great when you have a PC connected to your TV, wireless mouse, but only a cabled keyboard out of reach when you're lying on your bed with an urge to put "pornhub" into the search bar...

What?

Well, I've been playing Chrono Trigger with the OSK all morning. I've taken a fancy to it already. I even made the game window the same width as the keyboard, so it looks and feels as though it's implemented. What's more, it's very responsive and allows me to play and old game in a fun, new way.

Yeah, recovery won't be all that bad :p.

As far as I can understand it's an isometric view RPG
It is. IMO, it also aged VERY poorly. I've never understood all the love it gets, but far be it from me to try and stop you from playing what most people consider a timeless classic.

Bladur's Gate 1, 2 and games like it, such as Fallout 1 and 2 (much better IMO) and Planescape Tormet (The RPG you can win without fighting at all) off GOG.com for $10 and below.

If I can stomach Might and Magic games I should be fine with this :)

I've actually just settled in with a free-to-play MMO called Solstice Reborn. It's not very keyboard dependent, so it works out great.
