I must say, he raises some very interesting points that I suppose, in some cases at least, would be relevant. However, I found his tone a little too patronising to accept everything he said, it had, as many others have pointed out, an air of someone projecting their problems. Still, he redeemed himself in commenting on how the communities formed through gaming are positive.

Unfortunately, I don't see that as enough to counteract his generalisation of all gamers being alone and depressed. I for one have found that gaming has brought me closer to many people, including as of late the person I've been interested in for quite some time, and chalk his remarks up to an unlucky bad experience.

spending hours reading books is some how a better choice than doing the same with games?.

I like books and gaming I have a girlfriend (known her for about 5/6 years been together about 2 or 3) I will have kids someday (allready talked about it with her) guess what Im gonna do??? Ill read to and game with my kid/'s. TRUST ME gaming is time well spent.

Ambition? over rated sorry but we cant all be great hell some dont want or need to be.

I didnt lose those years I spent them and Im going to spend many more with my future children doing it all again Im going to be a good dad hows that for ambition?.

(P.S. and you better believe my kids are going to watch all the great movies from the 80's and 90's whether they like it or not HA)

Can't even pretend to be touched by this.
You stereotype everyone that plays videogames, first error.
You think everyone sees the same things as the best, second error.
Third error, you say that it brings us together then say we are alone.
That's just bullshit, dude.
I know you did this for a good cause.. But its just awful. It was so awful and not touching that I didn't laugh at its amazing fail.

^^ What I wrote on Youtube.
Y'know, my uncle plays a lot of videogames, in fact at least 20% of his world is videogames.
And guess what?
He's married, he's rich, he traveled the world more than once, he works with some of the biggest Hi tech companies in the world.
What do you say to that, Brian?
And what the heck's up with saying it can unite us a second after you burned the damn game, and then saying we should leave video games to rot in the ground?!
This BULLSHIT has me steamed up now.
Congrats Brian, you did two things:
1.Mock everyone who plays video games
2.Got me pissed. And when I'm emperor of the universe and The Escapist are all my high-ranking officers, you're the first to do in the forever-going torture room, buddy.

Cute video, although I don't get some of the things he says early on. For example, how long does it take to make a lvl 80 character? In my mind, learning Spanish and French could and would take years, even to somebody who's good at language. Of course, I've never played WoW, and I may have a different standard on what amounts to "learning" an entire language. I like that it ends on a high note, as I agree heartily that video games do have a positive effect in bringing people together.

Guys, if I were an outsider coming to the Escapist and reading these comments, I would have no willingness to join. Please consider what you're writing, and that the person who made the video was merely voicing his opinion, not force feeding you it. Think about that, before you come across as the "incredibly arrogant jerks" (and this was a voice to some, not all of the comments here).
And how does the guy making this video not come across as an incredibly arrogant jerk in his own right? I'm getting a little tired of being expected to walk on eggshells for the benefit of people who want to farm teardrops for whatever incredibly pointless reason they're selling. And I really can't be bothered to care about outsiders or most insiders for that matter. Is there a reason I should care? Is my opinion that he's wrong and pulling the addict card any less valid because I'm not using kid gloves?

Don't answer that question. I already know what you're going to say.
My point was that people were overreacting to the content. People can calmly say they disagree with it without coming across as distasteful.

you can't let anything consume you, be it video games, movies, tv shows, books, its really just up to every person to make their own choices. i do like the views on the community though, thats what it's all about for me.

You hit it on the head right from the start.

A lot of people allow things like Videogames to consume them....This animation kind of made it sound like only Videogames can ruin your life.

I like to think that the majority of gamers aren't Basement Dwellers and actually do venture outside, watch movies, read books,go on holidays and DON'T spend so much time that it effects work/relationships

The video had an overwhelming feeling of someone trying to pin their own failings on something else.

"Man, crack sucks. It ruined my life. It must be crack's fault".

Frankly, if you get "addicted" then it's one thing, it's something else entirely different to simply be a gamer.

Me? Yeah, I play a lot of games. But let's examine what other people in my age bracket (university-aged) do in their free time instead of playing games:
1. Clubbing
2. Drinking
3. Watching sports
4. Reading books
5. Generally dicking about

Oh, what I have missed. Except for #4, I can't really see how missing out on such inane activities impacts my life in a negative way.

This guy is preaching a garbled message. Yes, if you do nothing but game to the point where your wife leaves you then you have a problem. The same could be said for model trains, however.

bah, most people who "waste" their life playing video games would just as readily "waste" their time watching TV if games didn't exist. games are only a problem if you make them a problem.

If you want my opinion, he's just pissed because he lost his wife and he's using games as a scapegoat rather than face up the the face he screwed up.

I like how he says that he says that games are just entertainment, so they have no value then says a better way to spend your time is to read books, which are entertainment. Really it's not the games it is the people because since games have more lasting appeal than books or films. He got divorced because of video games. Anyone who spends more time on games than their marriage doesn't have the right to blame the games. Whilst he does have a noble agenda his argument and story are not put across very well and so I cannot agree with him fully.
