I was looking through my old games collection the other day and came across my big, unattractive, grey, square playstation 1, and fell in love with the thing all over again. As far as i'm concerned, perhaps the best games i've ever played were on that console, and if they re-released them now id happily buy them. FInal Fantasy 8, Metal Gear Solid, Front Mission 3, Marvel vs Capcom, Castlevania SOTN, it had such an amazing game line up it was untrue. I put Front Mission in my ps3 a few days back now and i mustve clocked up something rediculous like 58 hours already.

The ps3 doesn't actually have that many console specific NEW releases.. I think the original PS was just better in taht respect. Sure sure, the ps3's graphics, hard drive, disc capacity, everything technical is better, but i still dont think it has the heart of that eyesore grey box that i fell in love with.

Anyone agree? Or have similar feelings for another console?

I loved it at the time but the majority of games from that era haven't aged well at all (especially tomb raider). Its kind of understandable though because it was the first 3D generation. I still play twisted metal 2 with my brother regularly. We're trying to complete it with every possible character combination... Despite the horrible graphics/draw distance/frame rate we still have a lot of fun with it.

I think I have more PS1 games than PS2 games. I think I went through 3 systems before I got my first PS2, because I played them so much and they ended up dying.

No, not for any particular console, but around about that era in general. I think the Playstation, N64 and PC all had some extremely good quality games that came out, or started a series around the late 90s. Maybe by comparison it wasnt much different to any other more recent period, but in terms of the impact some of the games had on me, it was personally my gaming golden age.

I still play a couple of my PS1 games, but on my PS3, and can get a few hours of enjoyment out of them. I must say I have been shocked at how dated the graphics look in some games. My memory of photorealistic wrestelers in a WCW game (I forget which one) turned out to be a bunch of box men.

Thats why Sony pulled the 'smaller and more attractive' ps1 trick, as they did with the ps2. they knew peoples originals would break as the lens just stopped reading discs.

Much agreed, i was never much of a PC gamer but i did have a fondness of Age Of Wonders, which i believe was around that time. Most influencal game from that era? For me it has to be the original Metal Gear, but it is a tough decision.

MGS4 put the whole graohics thing in perspective for me durting the flashback scene on the wya to Shadow Moses. One of the best parts of the game in my opinion, just reliving those moments.
"..! A sureveillance camera?!"
Seeing that shocked me how dated the graphics were.

Hell, I have that problem with my PS2. I remember when FFX looked amazing.

If i'm honest though, yeah i'll say "oooh the graohics are amazing." and be awed by the prettyness on screen, but graphics only play a minor part in a game for me. It's all about storytelling, immersion, relating to characters.. WHich i think games are beginning to lose. Now developers just try and overload our eyes.

Yessss, PS1 was great, best game ever was Crash Bandicoot!
Yeah! Crash 3 was such an awesome game.
I'm considering getting Crash on the 360, as that is the only console I've got left set up now. Crash on the DS would be awesome, as I always have my DS with me. A lass...

Holy shit, the same thing happened to me recently. PS rules them all!!!1!1!

They need to start releasing PS1 classics on the PSN, pronto!

Man, just hearing that start up gave me a healthy injection of nostalgia

I think it's the ruler over all in our heads. It seems to have the most games that were great at the time, but now...eh. They haven't aged well for the most part. There are some exceptions of course, but I would like to see older games updated for today's market (although that may just ruin a good many of those games as well). The jump to 3D brought a lot of new ideas to the table, but not all of them good. I'd like to see some reimagined with today's technology and experience.

Dear god, I love that start-up! I swear that just gave me goosebumps. I remember, I played my original Playstation so much it would freeze after half an hour, so the only way to play games on it after a few years was by having it upside down.... Then it was fine :D

You're looking through a memory lens. The Ps3 is just as good as the ps at the time. It's just at the time the PsX (as they called it) had no real major compition the only other system still used cartridges so it DOMINATED. Well I guess the sega saturn came out somewhere in there too but it doesn't count.

The Sega Saturn Died for Our Sins.

Haha the same thing happened to me too! I had to place it in awkward positions to play games. It once fell over and died but I was able to fix it by simply using some string which I tied around a battery inside which was slightly damaged. Good times!

Haha, it's the one console we could all fix with house hold items :p I also found it worked well if suspended mid air...

As good as the PSX was for me, I find it interesting that there are more N64 games I would go back and play now than there are PSX games that I would do the same for. As some one said before, they didn't age well.
