You're looking through a memory lens. The Ps3 is just as good as the ps at the time. It's just at the time the PsX (as they called it) had no real major compition the only other system still used cartridges so it DOMINATED. Well I guess the sega saturn came out somewhere in there too but it doesn't count.

The Sega Saturn Died for Our Sins.
As a system, sure. But the fact that there is alternatives now such as the xbox 360, with the biggest name games being multi console, only strengthens my point. The fact that it had no comptetition only emphasises how amazing it was. Nothing COULD compare to it. As for the ps3 being just as good, i dont agree. the games that came out for psx ( i thought they only called it that in japan?) were groundbreaking and new they were brand new titles with new ideas, stories, things were tested back then, people tyhrew out crazy ideas that often worked. Now? Most games we have are sequels and if not, are simply the same game as others on the market painted a different colour.
Maybe the psx simply had the fortune of being 'born' in this era and it was the era itself that spawned this gaming goodness, in which case.. That era surely is better than todays?

I was looking through my old games collection the other day and came across my big, unattractive, grey, square playstation 1, and fell in love with the thing all over again. As far as i'm concerned, perhaps the best games i've ever played were on that console, and if they re-released them now id happily buy them. FInal Fantasy 8, Metal Gear Solid, Front Mission 3, Marvel vs Capcom, Castlevania SOTN, it had such an amazing game line up it was untrue. I put Front Mission in my ps3 a few days back now and i mustve clocked up something rediculous like 58 hours already.

The ps3 doesn't actually have that many console specific NEW releases.. I think the original PS was just better in taht respect. Sure sure, the ps3's graphics, hard drive, disc capacity, everything technical is better, but i still dont think it has the heart of that eyesore grey box that i fell in love with.

Anyone agree? Or have similar feelings for another console?
yup!
my godfather came out to visit me last year and he had something he was going to give me for my 10th birthday but he lost it. now that he found it he asked me if i still wanted a Super Nintendo still in the box. since then ive been playing FF3, zelda, super mario world, super metroid, star fox, and earthworm jim more than my xbox360. its somewhat due to nostalgia but mostly it reminds me of a time when graphics, frame rate, hard drives, blu-ray, and motion controlls didn't matter as long as the game was FUN! and i think video games have forgotten that a game must be fun before you can worry about how good it looks or other gimmicky crap.
so yes i understand why you would rekindle an old console relationship.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but do you honestly think that beeing exclusive to a single console makes a game better? How does have a negative effect on the game that x-box owners (and sometimes wii owners) can play the game as well?
Have you had some bad experriences with some bad PC -> console ports? or am I misunderstanding you totally

My fondest memories are for the SNES, the Gamecube and the PS2 on the home console front.

No.

They were okay, but for that generation, N64>PSX any day of the week I'm afraid.

Sony (and a lot of fans) act like the PSX was the first console to use CDs when they quite obviously weren't. They're possibly the most painfully slow CD console in history (and yes, I did take the Saturn into consideration).

However; to not completely disagree with the OP, there were some great games for that ugly grey rectangular bastard:

- Final Fantasy Tactics, VII, VIII & IX
- Dragonball GT: Final Bout
- WWF Smackdown games
- Time Crisis
- Legend Of Dragoon

Are just a few I feel like giving a mention.

I think the PS1 combined all the right things. There were many games which had the complex storytelling of the SNES/developed it further. At the same time the CDs allowed spectaculary rendered movies. In retrospective, the leap from the SNES to the PS1 (yes, i know, the one is Nintendo, the other one Sony) was such a well-rounded package that it is possible the last time we will see this.
And although I repeat myself: Compare the stuff that was published on the SNES and PS1 to the steaming pile of recycled, uninspired vomit that make up 99% of games in the last 5 years.

If i'm honest though, yeah i'll say "oooh the graohics are amazing." and be awed by the prettyness on screen, but graphics only play a minor part in a game for me. It's all about storytelling, immersion, relating to characters.. WHich i think games are beginning to lose. Now developers just try and overload our eyes.

I think that graphics aren't essential but are hugely helpful in the immersion, take for example Bioshock. The graphics in that game were really surreal and arty and it made the game feel a lot weirder, and cell shaded games give a nice feel also.
That's not to say you have to have good graphics to be immersed, but it's a viewpoint.

OT: Um... I still pretty much love the Ps2, but the Ps1 had Crash Team Racing which made it epic win in my book. (And the original Rayman, Fuck yeah)

Yessss, PS1 was great, best game ever was Crash Bandicoot!
I loved Crash 3. Also, Spyro wasn't that bad.

The original RE games are on that console, of course I love it! RE directors cut was the first ps1 game I ever owned.

Meh, they should find a way to make cartridges have as much or more memory as a disc. Discs are too fragile, but I have NEVER had a cartridge break. If my N64 and teh games a human, I would have hit so much to have multiple life sentances for assault and battery.

Consoles that give me a good feeling just by looking at them (because of the good times I had with them or because of the time in my life when I played them) -

Any Game & Watch
Sega Computer 3000H
Master System
PlayStation
Dreamcast
Purple Gamecube
Black and Red Nintendo DS Lite

It's been a long life and video games have been a big part of it.
