Really.

Who'd have thunk it.

I am literally staggered in surprise.
Come on, that's a little harsh. It can also emulate games that have been out for decades, and which one could emulate for free on their own PC without spending $100.

Combining that with a bunch of smart phone games makes it totally worth the purchase price. Right? RIGHT?!

Honestly though, when I first heard about the Ouya it reminded me of those old handheld game systems that would have 100 classic and open source games on them, like Tetris. Did anyone actually buy those over a gameboy?

I really wish joypad manufacturers would stop making plastic buttons & switch to a nice soft rubber.
I rather prefer the plastic buttons myself, they're just much more "clicky." With rubber buttons in the back of my mind I'm never really sure whether I've pushed the button hard enough or not.

I still think there's hope for it, but they need to get rid of that shady "easy payment" button. Aside from that they really need is to get more devs on board with it. Dev support will literally make or break this machine. Then again, I think the general public might not be able to come to terms with the graphical limitations of the system without rejecting it.

I really never cared about the ouya. I never really got the point of it. I don't really like smartphone games.

edit: I just realized I put really in every sentence. My sentences are crap when I'm tired..

A console that only plays smartphone games, and requires them to be free (read as: microtransaction-riddled or initially limited)? Who thought this was a good idea again?

Actually a fair few people. I am not one of them. Very basically, people do contribute good, fleshed out games for free very often, anywhere.
I think the Ouya people have overestimated the generosity of the average person. I tend to see this optimistic view of people in many open source projects, as they are trying to contribute in creating an internet and such where information is free and people can create and share without the barrier of entry that is money and copyright. Not in a capitalist society can this be done - where we trade in intellectual property like games and software. Course, many still believe the dream.

So a pre-release console isn't perfect? By golly how could this happen when all the others launch in an immaculate state...
And the new dirt cheap console isn't racking up all the triple A exclusives? Well shiver me timbers, this is truly shocking and unforeseen.

It looks to me they got some major market kinks to work out but the console is out as promised, now it remains to be seen if they can bring it up to proper standard of business.

And for those who still don't understand their "all games free" policy, it is just a mandatory free demo that is linked to the game.
Sadly this has invited the pay-to-win hustlers that have taken over the mobile market.

This is something...mighty disturbing about your avatar, but I cant quite put my finger on what it is.
It's a pony looking back at you. Why is it looking back at you? Because doggy style.

God, the internet has corrupted my mind so badly. Goddamn furries.

There's actually tons of games on the internet that are free, flash games. Many of them are terrible, but others can be rather fantastic, just look at some of the really creative stuff on Newgrounds. There are tons of people who make games without looking for any profit. Some do it because they want to build some kind of portfolio so they can point at things they've made when applying to jobs at game companies, some do it because they want the practice, and some do it just because they can, even though they have no illusions that their games are simple things that people probably wouldn't be willing to pay for they make the games because they think that they can make something fun that they can share with others. There are tons of people on the internet who create content just because they can, and any new outlet can be good for them, the question is whether enough of them know how to program well in the android operating system and whether the Ouya can actually attract these people.

This is my perspective. It is a device that shares a library with a series of devices of widely varying capability. The platform as a whole is notable (as is the iPhone of course) for games that sell for around a buck (if they ask anything) and widespread and utterly shameless copies and rip offs of literally every product that achieves even a modicum of success. Couple that with a platform notable (with respect to the iPhone) for widespread piracy, an insignificant user base, woefully inadequate hardware when compared to any modern home video game system, and who's frontman is fresh from the wreckage of a company that very nearly collapsed more than once and I have little reason to believe the device is going to do well.

Without the install base, the odds of attracting any real talent to develop to the platform's strengths is virtually non-existent which leaves you with a library of games meant for a platform that uses an entirely different interface and targets an entirely different user base than the gamer on the couch the Ouya is aimed at.

So you may as well buy a high end android and connect it to your TV?

Ouya did seem like a bit of a dumb idea and to be honest you would have to be even dumber to buy it, because you could just buy an Android phone for around the same amount and play the games as they were meant to be played.

I don't really get the point of the thing in the first place. Some people were acting like this was going to give the big three what for.

Ha.

So it turned out to be exactly as expected. What did people think it was going to be like?
Honestly , i think people got too enthusiatic about the thing . They took what little was told to us , and let their imagination run wild. I think it was the hope for something to combat the AAA industry that got a lot of people to donate to this thing.

I on yhe other hand didn't donate , but i would have definately bought one if it turned out only half decent . A man can dream .

The Ouya always seemed silly to me. The android games market is in a terrible state and anyone who already has a tablet can play android games on their TV plug in an xbox (or ps3 if you prefer) controller and you are totally set.
An I'm pretty sure if any decent games come out for the Ouya exclusivity it will not be very hard to play them on another android device. Maybe an emulator might be needed I'm sure some happy little coder will provide us with a solution either way.

For the money a tablet is far more useful and would seem to be the better choice The onya just seems like its a crappy pc and little else.

It can still work, just not the way it's been launched. I've got a feeling a lot of the ultra portable linux based gaming systems are going to end up in a similar boat to the Ouya thanks in large part to the majority of games being mobile based designs. The system needs to be able to take control of a niche that the main consoles are not handling well at the moment, such as all the middle ground games that would have found a perfect home on the ps2.
