What made this more epic for me was the fact that I was listening to Battlestar Galactica's Piano version of "All along the watchtower" while browsing the pics.

EPIC!

OT: I like to see it more as a humbling experience where we are just a tiny speck. Rather than this massive force of the universe. Until we build a death star that is.

Damnit..why do these jokes not have an effect in this thread?
It might have something to do with the grand scheme of things or putting humanity in perspective and

Wow...that's quite something. Really puts all the petty squabbling and masturbation jokes into perspective. Ah well.

The Pale Blue Dot does give cause for thought. Do you take it as a sign of how truly insignificant and meaningless your existence is, or do you look at it and realize that in a universe so massive the true miracle of life arising on such an unassuming little world and the great potential for that life in the Great Beyond?

There's a book I got a few years back, Cosmos: A Field Guide by Giles Sparrow, it's a massive collection of some truly magnificent images collected by Hubble. I won't post any links to Amazon or anything (because I'm not a salesman) but if astronomy is your thing it's definitely worth nipping out to the library to borrow for a week or two.

Amazing. Simply amazing.

Side not: It is giving us the finger....what the hell...
That is actually a part of the Carina Nebula called the Keyhole Nebula and that's the massive cloud burst to the right. The small nebula to the left (giving the finger) is nicknamed "finger of God" or "God's birdie"

I am not making that shit up..

Never let it be said that astronomers don't have a sense of humor.

This made me wish I was doing astronomy and that my parents had brought me a telescope for my 13th birthday instead of a gift voucher for running shoes.

Oh well..

And I ask: Where does YWH, Allah, Elohim, Vishnu, Odin, Ra, Marduk, etc, etc, etc. fit into that pale Blue Dot?

Look at all the potential mining colonies out there...
It's time a large group of us leaves this rock and starts plundering the asteroid belt near Jupiter, I tell you. From there we can move on, on generational ships, far beyond our own solar system.

Generation ships?. What a horrible idea! Free space, fresh air, sunshine. A home planet is where its at and Earth is as good as any. If not the only one supporting our existence.

Besides we are alone (for now). Where would we go with a generation ship and limited fuel, food and air?

To you, maybe!
I say we find planets that we can terraform and create new homeplanets. I'd definitely join the colonization crew of such a ship! Even if I never get to see the planet myself. The adventure, my friend, the adventure!
Or we use cryosleep, I'd also like to be part of the colonization process myself.

To a planet that has similar temperatures and gravity as Earth. Our telescopes have picked up a few of those, though they can't support life (at least not like ours) at the moment. That's where terraforming comes into play.

A Faster Than Light capable engine might be needed to get there though. Though Mars was said to be terraformable and its easier to get there. Anything beyond this system is a stretch tbh, though I very like the thought of it.

This is why I wish I was a professional astronomer, so I could just look at these pictures all the time, just looking at their beauty.....

Looking at Earth so far away, I wonder what it would be like if our planet had a debris ring like Saturn. How would we on Earth see the ring as well?. Like a rainbow?. Ah well.
