This. I will pay all of my money for it. All of it.

OT: The perfect protagonist is difficult to craft, because different characters appeal to different people. For example, as mentioned above, I love Duke Nukem, but I know that some people can't stand him. That's alright; it takes a certain kind of person to like a certain character.

For me, then, the perfect character is one I can project onto and relate to even when I have nothing in common with them. In that case, Caleb from Blood is the perfect protagonist to me. It's wonderful when you know very well that the character you're playing as is having just as much fun as you are. Rather than scowling angrily when blowing a cultist into meat products, he emits the most insane, gleeful laughter. And frankly, because the game is so fun, I've often found myself laughing right with him.
I am about as far as I can be from an insane, undead, revenge thirsty gunslinger, but he's portrayed in a way that I can easily and readily relate to and enjoy.

The perfect protagonist already exists.

And it's this bad-ass ************ right here.

His name is Yu Narukami. His daily agenda consists of hanging out with friends and killing super-natural entities inside of televisions.

[sub][sub][sub][sub]He's also the perfect blank slate for the player to project themselves onto.[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub]

The perfect protagonist? Don't you mean silent protagonist?

If not, there is always Dante.

Captain Walker from Spec Ops: The Line. An unreliable narrator that doesn't serve as a vehicle for player wish-fulfillment and who has a very clear (and well executed) character development arc that is the focal point of the entire game.
