"Manyara? Raising me? GODS NO!" she exclaimed in mock horror. Her smile faded as she adopted a serious tone, "Well- I guess you could say she is to a certain degree... but she is just one of many. On the commune we all look out for each other, we grow and change together as one family. So I've got a lot of parents." She leaned back onto the bed roll and chuckled lightly, "waaayy too many parents."

"You're family seems pretty big though too. Families that big don't just happen, they've uhhm.. got something uniting them, some reason for coming together." She fixed her gaze on Lucia, "So what brought you guys together?"

It was a bold question, but the question had been eating at her all day. Lucia said she liked kids, and what were kids if not curious.

"Maybe."

"Sorry," said Acolyte. "That came out a bit more pessimistic than I wanted it to be." Looking at Natalia from where he was sat, he continued. "I promise you, I'll give him as much help as I can get him to take from me. Anyway, let's go back."

Getting to his feet, Acolyte was suddenly overwhelmed by dizziness. He took two tottering steps, his vision blurring, throwing a hand out and catching Natalia's shoulder to keep from falling. Then, just as quickly as it had come, the strange sensation was gone, his vision snapping back into clarity as though someone had adjusted lens focus on a camera.

"Sorry about that," he said, speaking slowly. His tongue felt numb. "Stood up too quick, I guess." Then he sniffed, feeling a tickling in his nostrils, that moved down to his upper lip. Pulling out a handkerchief, he dabbed at his face. Balling it up to conceal the smear of red, he thrust it back into his pocket.

"We've got movement." Chen whispered, holding out his arm to signal. Everyone took their places, with multiple fields of fire all focussed on the bottleneck of rubble that concealed the secret passage. Chen took a knee behind a boulder on point, and up in the sniper's nest, Yu tightened his grip on his binoculars.

Selena and Abigail had made most of the trip through the tunnel in eerie silence. It was only when they were almost to the other side, that Selena turned and rested her hand on her new partner's shoulder. For the first time in this whole endeavour, she looked visibly nervous.

"The people we're about to meet won't be pleased to see us, at first." she told her. "I'll have some explaining to do, to put it mildly. Stay calm, and don't make sudden movements."

"Understood Selena. Guess I'll just keep quiet for now and follow your lead then?" Abigail asked as they carried on walking to whether it was they were heading to. Like Selena, Abigail was also nervous, but the nerves were tinged with a hint of being afraid. Afraid of what might happen if things didn't go so well.

"Before we get there, mind filling me in on who we're meeting up with?"

"I don't really know." Selena admitted, as they started walking again. "The Colonel played his cards close to his chest. All he ever told me was that he had agents among the General Population, and how I could contact them when the time was right. If thing's hadn't gone according to plan, if they'd decided to torture me, then at least this way I couldn't give them anything useful."

On the other end of the tunnel, Chen felt cold as he first picked up the voices. He couldn't make out anything of detail, yet, but he could swear that he recognised one of them. His finger rested on the trigger of his sidearm.

The two women exited the tunnel, winding their way through the mess of rubble and stalagmites that concealed it's entrance. It was immediately apparent that this was deeper into the bowels of The Pit than Selena had even been before. She had been to the Lower Levels on her official inspections, but this really was the true belly of the beast. That beast was in limbo now. Whenever she'd been down previously, The Pit had always been buzzing with activity. A miserable place, yes, but alive, teeming, a mesh of moving, human parts, all interlocking in a great, collaborative effort...

That was gone now. This cavern was dark, and so very, very cold.

Selena was stunned, as a dozen or so flashlights all blazed on at once, dazzling her. There was no screaming of commands. Whoever had come to greet them was aware of how far beyond light sound would carry in a place like this, and stayed quiet. Though she could not see a thing, Selena remained outwardly calm. Slowly, she raised her hands, and stepped out into full view.

"We're alone, and we're unarmed." She said, keeping her voice low and level.

"That was dumb." replied a voice that shook with suppressed rage. Her vision slowly returning, Selena managed to focus her gaze on the man standing right in front of her. He was Chinese, his body covered in gang affiliated tattoo's, and a more recent coating of cuts and bruises. More importantly, every line on his face was etched with fury, a muscle jumping at the corner of his eye... and he was pointing a semi-automatic square at her heart.

"Are you the Colonel's man?" she asked him.

"Shut the fuck up!" he hissed, before turning the gun on Abigail. "You must be Warden Nyte. Let me ask you something, Warden..." he said, training his weapon back on Selena. "What the fuck are you doing bringing that traitorous ***** down here?!"

Up on overwatch, Yu didn't say a word. However, his lips were now a line so thin as to be barely visible, as he watched the scene below unfold.

Korovitch watched the scene in front of him impassively. Having been present for the arrival of the inspection team, he recognised Selena. And although he had rarely visited the facility's bar, he did recognise Nyte as belonging to the Warden's Auxiliary. That she was alive and unharmed implied she had been cooperative with whatever faction now controlled RACDI-Alpha. Still, she was a woman, with practically no combat training, to boot. The auxiliary were merely service for the actual wardens, so he couldn't blame her for going along with things.

Selena, on the other hand... she had been meddling since her arrival. And what word through the grapevine that Korovitch was aware of said that she had all but sold Lee out to the invading force. He scowled as he watched her.

Abigail had her hands up the moment a dozen or so flashlights were pointing in their direction. It took her eyes a few moments to adjust to the sudden shift in light levels, her eyes blinking a few times. When everything became clearer, she could see that there were a handful of soldiers pointing assault rifles at them. She kept quiet as one of the soldiers, of Chinese descent and at best guess the leader stepped forward, the picture painted on his face was that of furious anger as she started barking at Selena. A few moments later, he briefly pointed the gun at Abigail before aiming it back at Selena.

"What the fuck are you doing bringing that traitorous ***** down here?!"

Ah yes, the traitor that was Selena Hernandez. Abigail had heard that she was confirmed present at Lee's execution, and had been co-operating with General Hammond immensely since his arrival; it was probably what granted her the near unrestricted freedom that she possessed, whereas the likes of Abigail and Zach were kept a close eye on. A part of her was sickened by the fact, but she realised that sometimes you have to do dirty things to survive.

"To be disposed of perhaps like the traitor she is? Or maybe as a means that we can all get out of here not only alive, but this place returned to Venture. Haven't decided yet. Unforseen consequences and all that." She replied in a calm, neutral tone, her face relaxed for the most part.

"And what about you. Why are you down here?"

"I recognize her," Neil whispered to Yu. "She was with Lee in the Hive before everything went to shit." Neil was feeling strangely talkative. "Who is she?"

"Her name is Selena Hernandez." Yu replied stiffly. "Her official title is Chief Resource Analyst of the Venture Horizon Executive Board. She's no mere bean-counter though... she has other talents, and Venture has had no qualms about using them. She's a 'diplomat', which in her world is a pretty way of saying she's a Spook. She was with Colonel Lee supposedly before the facility fell to Hammond, only Lee winds up dead, and she winds up practically at Hammond's right hand without so much as a scratch on her...

Oh," he added, his tone darkening. "and she also brokered the deal that brought Ignite Solutions into the Pan-Arabian War against the Tigers, leaving us stranded in the dessert with our asses hanging out."

Yu went back to listening very intently. Needless to say, he was interested in hearing what Ms. Hernandez had to say for herself.

Down on the cave floor, Selena flashed a quizzical sideways look at Abi.

'Well thanks for the vote of confidence!'

More of her vision was returning now, and she could get a better look at who else was gathered here. There were some faces she recognised.

"Lieutenant Abreu, I believe; and Captain Korovich; and..." Selena legitimately smiled. "Aggie. I'm glad to see you're all still alive."

"You don't address them!" Chen snapped "You address me."

"And who am I addressing?"

"My name isn't important."

Selena bit her lip, and tried to remain relaxed.

"I'm not your enemy." she said.

Though they were standing over ten yards apart, Chen looked for all the world in the pause that passed between them that he might spit in her face.

"Of course not." he said eventually, surprisingly sincere despite all his bitterness. "If this was a trap, you wouldn't make yourself the bait. Anyway, the message we received was solid." Chen seemed to relax, but did not go so far as to lower his weapon. "That doesn't mean you're still not lucky I haven't shot you already, after all the shit you've pulled. I've got a lot of questions, and God help you if I don't like your answers."

"I have a question," said Korovitch, speaking for the first time since they had taken up their position.

Felix stayed near the woman who had approached him earlier, Aggie they had called her. He wasn't playing guardian or anything of the sort, she seemed strong enough and he wasn't sure if her illness had been feigned or not. It was simply that he had no business in these people's affairs, and thus stayed near the back of the squad.

Clementina meanwhile was just poking out of the shadows, her arms lowered and unassuming, but a glance downward would notice she was brandishing an impressive looking Mac-10, the one she had lifted off the cannon fodder she and the others had mopped through earlier.

Clem wanted nothing more than to make this bastard's body unrecognisable, and if she was very, very lucky, she would be permitted such an honour. Though, extremely unlikely.

Selena looked to Luka, but didn't say anything. The corner of Chen's mouth twitched involuntarily, but eventually he spoke up.

"Go ahead."

"We've been down here for quite a damn while," said Korovitch. "In that time, things have only gotten more intense. Rations of food and supplies have gotten harder to come by, even though the inmate population was fairly well provided for when this all happened. Ms. Hernandez, you've been on the surface this entire time. What's the situation above ground? What are the supplies like? Have they received reinforcements? Because things can't be going all that smoothly for them, if the two of you were able to get down here relatively unaccosted."

"Maybe she fucked her way down here." Spat Clem as her eyes burned a hole right through Selena. ""You must have made quite an impression. We lose control and already under their leader's wing. As dedicated as I'm sure your commander is, surely he can't have had the time to be so... hand's on, with all the new responsibilities."

Clementina had no idea what was going on above the surface. But considering Selena didn't look like a down trodden husk, she had to have fucked her way to safety, it was the only thing that made sense for someone like 'her'. The others were going to be pissed she interrupted, and she would apologise, because she was on the right side. Unlike her.

"Stow it," Korovitch replied, not looking round. "It's past time we had fresh information, and I want to hear it."

Selena bit back the torrent of appropriate retorts that sprung into her head. Now was not the time for antagonism.

"Well..." she began, addressing Luka directly. "You'll be pleased to hear that whatever Colonel Lee tasked you with is working. All internal and external communication and surveillance is blocked, meaning, for one thing, that General Hammond can't call for backup of any kind, assuming he ever had any. We still know so little about how The Songbirds are organised. On the other hand, they came here in force, and with all the men they lost throwing themselves at Lee's defences, what supplies Hammond does have will stretch him longer than they supposedly needed to." Selena hung her head a little. "You know, a part of me thinks Hammond was counting on that. The man really is a bastard."

"Noted. Stay on point." Chen interrupted.

"Right." Selena took a deep breath. "If the rate of consumption of resources stays as it is currently, I predict that people will start starving in a little over two weeks. Of course, when it gets down to it, there are plenty of corners Hammond can cut to stretch things out. Neither he or any of his men seem overly concerned about it, nor are they concerned that they probably can't hold this place for that long anyway. RACDI-Alpha was a big scalp to take, but that means that Venture's going to want it back all the more, and sooner or later they will be bringing down the hammer. Hammond destroyed most of this facilities heavy defences when he took it himself, and even with all the Inmates they've conscripted, they'd be bulldozed by the main thrust of Venture's forces. Of course, that raises the question as to why Venture don't just go ahead and do it already. The technology from Project CONDOR has blinded both sides, and neither wants to risk making a single move without intellectual superiority over the other...

Lee was right from the start. It's obvious now that there's a much bigger play at work than just what's happening here, and neither Hammond nor Venture want to upset the board."

"Right." Chen replied "I think it's time we got to the elephant in the room... I want to know exactly what happened between the two of you preceding the Colonel's death. What did he want from you, and why did it end with him facing a firing squad?"

While the matter was sensitive to say the least, this would be the matter at hand that Selena could provide the easiest answer to. In fact, if the man currently facing her down really did know Lee as well as she suspected, then he'd probably already put the pieces together, and just needed to hear the words out loud before he could accept them.

"Lee spent nearly all his time in the three months after Borealis preparing this facility for an attack he suspected was coming, after he'd stumbled across evidence of infiltration in Venture Horizon's databases, looking for leverage should things between him and the Executive Board turn ugly. Even so, when that attack eventually came, he wasn't ready, not by a long shot. The threat had snuck up on all of us, with the aid of Venture Horizon technology that they shouldn't have been able to obtain, and saboteurs on the inside who'd passed our most stringent vetting processes. Whoever the Songbirds are, we'd grossly underestimated them until now. Once it became clear that RACDI-Alpha was no longer defensible, the new objective became preserving loyal elements inside the facility, to continue gathering intel on our enemy with the aim of sabotaging their ultimate objective. Simply protecting the agents he already had was not enough, however. Lee needed someone within the ranks of the new occupiers, someone with less restricted movement than the average prisoner, in order to initiate the next phase of the plan."

"That's you, is it?" Chen responded, looking unhappy. "Why would he suddenly turn round and give that responsibility to a person who came hear looking for an excuse to blacklist him?"

"He didn't have any other choice." Selena replied, calmly. "He had a reputation for inspiring loyalty, and had recently purged this place of any of his colleagues that couldn't be persuaded round to his way of thinking. With that in mind, nobody on Lee's payroll would ever be trusted by the enemy.

I was never on Lee's payroll. I was, as you say, a recent acquaintance, with an agenda and a track record of switching sides. I was the only person for whom playing the turncoat with the enemy at the gates was plausible."

"That's not convincing me that you didn't switch sides for real." said Chen. "You're not going to try and tell me that Lee won you over, are you?"

"I have enormous respect for your former Warden In Chief." Selena rebuked firmly. "However, you are right, I never planned on dying for him. That said, I don't deal unless I can weigh up all the factors in my favour. The Songbirds are shrouded in misdirection, and their only clearly observable trait is a complete disregard for human life. They might have the upper hand for now, but I'm convinced that joining up with their cause would gain me nothing that I want."

Chen didn't have a reply to that, which Selena took to be the go-ahead to continue.

"Anyway, even with my reputation, General Hammond did not trust me at first, and kept me in a state of captivity that rendered me useless. Fortunately, Lee and I had accounted for this beforehand. There was still one play we could make to convince the enemy that I was no threat to them. So, when they brought me to Lee, hoping to use my status as a Venture executive to persuade him to co-operate, as we anticipated they would, I turned him loose.

As per Lee's plan, I was incapacitated by him before he staged a fruitless and desperate attempt at escape. When I was found and brought to by Hammond's men, I told them that Lee had divulged his escape plan to me, and then knocked me out when I tried to stand in his way. Then, I led them right to him, and he was recaptured before he had the chance to leave the facility. You know what happened to him after that; and for my co-operation, I was given largely unmonitored access on the surface, where Hammond believed anything of value to have been destroyed anyway. Using this, I've been able to further examine everything that Lee had found searching Venture's systems, and make my way down here to you, so we can take the next step towards thwarting the Songbirds."

Chen looked like a wounded animal as he absorbed her words, sweat beading on his brow.

"Dammit. Fucking dammit!" he growled hoarsely.

"Soldier..." Selena said, firmly, sensing her moment to apply some force. "You knew Colonel Lee better than I did. He trusted you with his life, and he trusted me with his death. Which do you think was more important to him?"

Those words hit home. None of the others in the cave had seen Chen look quite so stricken as he did then. Even so, he slowly lowered his weapon, a signal for the others to do the same.

Breathing a sigh of relief as the soldier had lowered his gun, Abigail lowered her hands also, the feeling of dread had passed. She found it illuminating to hear about some of the more specific aspects of what was going on behind the scenes. But it made her think that her part in things was somewhat smaller compared to those that she was with. Words failed her as she couldn't think of what to say right at this moment.

Lowering his rifle, Korovitch turned to Chen. "So what is it that you intend to do now?"

"We can stand down now." Yu said, tapping Neil on the shoulder before getting to his feet. "Come on, we should probably be present for this anyway."

His expression was not so raw as Chen's. Still, something had struck home, that much was clear to see.

Back on the ground, Chen looked to the side in response to Luka's query, before sighing and thumbing over in Selena's direction.

"Guess you should be asking her. She seems like the one with the plan, after all."

Selena gritted her teeth, but went ahead regardless.

"I need you to help me escape."

If Chen hadn't been so disciplined, he'd have hooted with derisive laughter loud enough to wake the entire Lower Levels.

"Let me get this straight..." he replied, grimacing "We've been busting our asses just to survive for days, in vain hope that there was still some kind of plan in the works, then you get us all together, and persuade us not to blow your head off, just so you can tell us that the 'plan' is to save your sorry ass?! Lady... you've got some stones, I'll have to give you that!"

"There's more to it..."

"Oh no please, go on. I guess things really can only get better from this point."

"I'll require an escort, which means that anyone who does not explicitly need to stay here for our mission gets to escape too, if that's what they want." Selena continued. "I can't promise we'll be going somewhere better though...

The Venture file that Lee was most obsessed with in the months before his death was in reference to an operation, codenamed Project: TALON. When I tell you that I've had top-level access to all Venture Horizon operations, and I mean top-level, not the 'top-level' they give to idiot bureaucrats who they need to make feel important, I do it so you can understand how serious it is that I've never heard of this Project before I found it on Lee's files. Whatever TALON is, there are people very high up who want it buried very badly. Most of the information relating to it had been wiped or otherwise corrupted; and what was left, was under a level of encryption it would be a waste of time to even try and describe. Nevertheless, Lee was convinced that what was inside could point us to the truth behind everything that's happening, and help us stop it. I come to you now, because I've managed to pull a set of coordinates from the data, and I have us a way out."

Clementina rested her knuckles against her forehead and sighed. "So, Lee asked the person he trusts the least in possibly this corporation with his death, so we could escort you out of here alive, our reward being we get to tag along with your freedom?"

Holding her gun at her side she continued with a less bitter approach. "Look if we have a mission to do I'm happy to do it, but I still see little reason to trust you considering what you've done. I don't care if this ends up being a waste of time, I want proof that you're telling the truth, I want you to jump through hoops to earn trust. I don't care if its petty, I think its necessary."

Abigail was sitting down on a nearby rock, largely being overlooked by the soldiers as Selena went on about some grandiose plan to find information regarding some top secret project that Venture was cooking up. The more that Selena talked about it, the more it sounded like a suicide mission, or a waste of time, possibly both; after all, what was the probability that info regarding this TALON project still existed at these co-ordinates that had been found? She was finding the chewing out of Selena by the female soldier to be a bit grating, but it was justifiable given all that Selena had done.

"So," said Korovitch, sounding unimpressed with Selena's explanation. "Are you saying that by leaving, we'll be able to stop what's happening from the outside? Or do you really just want to get out before the situation deteriorates any further?"

He could hear the faint echo of footsteps somewhere behind him. Yu and Neil, no doubt.

Neil came up from behind the rest of Chen's group and stood by Korovitch. Though it didn't really concern him considering his mission, he couldn't help but speculate who would try to escape the facility with this woman.

If anyone should go, it should be Aggie and her brother, he figured.

"Well, I won't insult your intelligence by claiming I want to stay..." Selena said "Cutting RACDI-Alpha off from the rest of the world was a blow to the Songbirds, but it also means that there's nothing else we can do to stop what's coming from in here, and I doubt that an organisation capable of doing the things they've done so far would bet all their chips on this place. I know it's not much of a lead, but I don't think Lee would have poured the last of everything he had into getting us this much if he thought it was a dead end."

"No." Yu replied, joining the conversation "He wouldn't have."

He looked to Chen, who could only shrug his shoulders and sigh in a defeated, yet compliant gesture.

"When this all started, I had no more reason to trust any of you than the Colonel's say so." He continued, resolute. "You're all still here , because you've all proved, one way or another, that he made the right call..." He paused, looking to Selena "I'm giving her the same chance."

"Yu," Chen piped up. "you go with Selena. I'll stay behind and co-ordinate everyone we have left."

A long silence followed, as the twins looked at each-other through the darkness. What was said between the two could have filled volumes, just none of it out loud.

"Don't thank me just yet..." Chen followed up, smiling. "If I don't get to go on vacation, they I get first pick of who stays to keep me company."

Yu cracked a small smile. "Deal."

"Alright then: Luka, Fiona, Felix..." Chen rattled off the names. "You're staying to help me make General Hammond rue the day he set foot on this frozen pile of shit. Sound good?"

"Clementina, Lewis, and Aggie," Yu followed up. "You'll be joining Ms. Hernandez and I."

Korovitch listened as the names were rattled off. He was unsurprised that he would be remaining in The Pit. With the inherent danger facing whoever remained behind, Chen couldn't afford to put him anywhere else. Hell, if he had been passed over to Yu for the exit team, he'd have outright refused. As for Fiona, he was torn. On the one hand, he was glad that she would have his back. On the other, she was, assuming their suspicions about Wickers and Hayes proved unfounded, the last remnant of his squad. He wanted her safe.

It came as no surprise to Abigail that she'd be staying behind, even though she really wanted to leave this hellhole, it would look rather suspicious if one of the only bartenders upsticks and left, leaving only Zach to handle things; chances are he'd get questioned about it by the Commander or one of the other high ranking officers, and she didn't want that on her conscience. After the two brothers were finished, Abigail stood up and stretched her arms a bit.

"Well, unless you need me for something else, guess I'll be heading back upstairs."

Neil noted Korovitch's displeasure and looked to Chen. "We don't need so many staying behind," he said. "The more people we have, the easier we are to find."

Clementina wanted to put up a false argument, pretend she wanted to stay. She wanted to act outraged, but most of all she wanted to be outraged. She didn't enjoy what she was feeling. She didn't enjoy the relief she felt as she heard she'd be leaving this hell hole.

Felix's thoughts on the other hand drifted to home. To the sun-baked fields he would lie on for hours with his beloved, as they thought of names together. Was it a mistake coming here? Was it a stupid, awful mistake?

Chen looked over at Neil, and, without warning, broke out into a broad and reckless grin.

"Running from foxhole to foxhole isn't going to cut it anymore." he said. "Supplies are dwindling, and every move we make draws more attention to us. Oh, and I'm guessing this escape plan our new friend has cooked up, would be requiring some sort of distraction, so you don't get caught before you take more than two steps outside?"

"Pretty much." replied Selena.

"At which point, we're gonna have the Good General's full attention anyway. The more we run and hide, the more Hammond rules uncontested. The longer he stays like that, the more people he gets on his side. The more people he gets on his side, the sooner we get turned in. Hiding's not a plan I like anymore."

Surprisingly, Yu was smiling too.

"If you can't convince you're enemy that you're nowhere, convince him that you're everywhere at once."

"Right; and I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm a little sick of standing by and doing nothing while that son of a ***** dismantles what little there was that was getting better about this place when Lee was in charge. It's easy to order around an army of fanatics, but I wanna see how long Hammond can keep his cool when the rest of us decide to misbehave."

Lucia's gaze grew distant as the girl spoke.

"...Families that big don't just happen, they've uhhm.. got something uniting them, some reason for coming together."

You have no idea.

"So what brought you guys together?"

"Survival," Lucia said. Her tone was notably void of emotion. "Without them I would have died a long time ago... or worse." Finally, her eyes focused once more on the girl before her. "There are a lot of things in this world you're better off not knowing about. I only got a taste myself, but Nikolai and the others? Most of their lives were spent in the closest thing to hell this world can offer. I can't even imagine..." She trailed off as her imagination ran wild.

Eventually, she spoke once more. "I'd like to say they're good people, but to be honest, I'm not sure any of them have any concept of what 'peace time' actually is. They've fought their entire lives. It's hard to just let that go."

"Clementina, Lewis, and Aggie you'll be joining Ms. Hernandez and I."

A mixture of hope and anticipation washed over Lewis' face while it only gleamed in Aggie's eyes. It was nice seeing Selena again and it was even better to hear that they would escorting her out of the prison. It would take time and planning but the idea and the chance was there. Aggie knew deep down she was getting out of here and maybe whatever deity out there finally heard her bloody coughs. It was days since she's received any treatment or medication and she could feel her sickness loom over her. She hadn't had a major attack yet which concerned her. Either Aggie's body had finally staved off the sickness or was mounting a last ditch effort and yet the future was still hazy to her. She should be overjoyed or at least a bit emotional like Lewis but apprehension gnawed at her.

Lewis, on the other hand, gleamed when he hears the news but the soldier inside of him told him to restrain that emotion for now. But even with all his restraint, his morale was thoroughly boosted. They still had to escape the Pitt and the facility itself but the notion, the men and the ideas were there. All they had to do was arrange it and with the caliber of soldiers he had around him, Lewis felt confident. Lewis lowered his gun as he heard the twins talk and approached Abigail. It had been a long time since he had seen her. A part of him feared that she was hurt or killed but she seemed to be doing well.

"It's good to see you again." Lewis said to Abigail and Selina. "Although I wish it could have been in a different circumstance than this..."

"It's good to see you again." Said Lewis as he approached both Selina and Abigail. "Although I wish it could have been in a different circumstance than this..."

"Yeah, circumstances that don't involve fighting for our lives. Whilst I wouldn't mind joining you and the others outside for some fresh air, someone's got to keep the guys upstairs supplied with booze." Abigail remarked as she went over to Lewis and gave him a hug, glad to see that both he and Aggie were still alive.

"So, aside from the aforementioned fighting for one's life, how have you and Aggie been coping Lewis? Didn't see much of either of you since these Songbirds came into town." She then asked, showing some genuine concern for their well being.

[HEADING=1]Arc 3 - Chapter 2: 'Whispers'[/HEADING]

32 hours later...

"I won't ask you to be careful..." Yu said, facing his brother.

"And I won't have to lie." Chen finished for him.

The twins embraced, clapping each-other on the shoulders.

"Same goes for you, brother." Chen said, stiffly. "Just don't die, alright?"

Yu laughed "I still owe you a drink after that business in Sumatra, don't I?"

"Yeah, no way I'm letting you off the hook that easily."

The public display of affection now out of their systems, the two broke apart. Their jaws clenched, they nodded to each-other, before turning and walking their separate ways, where their groups awaited them.

"Our job is to be at the Back Door in one hour." Yu told his party sternly. "Until then, we stay low-key and watch each-other's backs. I trust you all realise that this in a No-Turning-Back situation. From this point onward, you life depends on the people standing beside you, and vice-versa. That doesn't work if we're not all on the same page. So, if there are any lingering thoughts or feelings that anyone needs to get off their chests, I will hear them out now, and only now."

Chen, by contrast, was far more laid back when addressing his new band of companions. Despite the imminent danger, and the continued uncertainty as to where all of this would end, today was shaping up to be more fun than he's had in a long while.

"You..." he began, picking Felix out of the crowd, and nodding at the pommel sticking out of the pocket of the other man's jumpsuit. "You're an Iberian, aren't you? I've never seen any Iberian fight with a broadsword before. Those I've met, fought with bullets just like the rest of us. You, on the other hand, can't shoot for shit, and would spend your last days in this hole carrying a sword with no blade." He pause for a second, before smiling, not unkindly. "I bet there's a story behind that, so go ahead and spill, why don't you."

Selena was on her fourth drink of the day already. Under the circumstances, she'd have rather kept her wits completely clear. However, appearances must be maintained; and besides, she could handle it. It was only the waiting that was killing her.

Abigail had not said much to her beyond what was cursory. Doubtless, she did not want to draw attention to the pair of them. However, at this moment, they were, unusually, alone.

"One way or another, I suspect we will not see each-other again after today." She announced. "Before that, I just thought you should know..." Selena raised her glass in a toast, smiling "You make a mean cocktail."

The medical wing was far less crowded chaotic than the last time General Hammond had visited it. All for the better. He could not stand the sick and wounded, their weakness grated like fingernails on a blackboard. As far as he was concerned, those who did not have the decency to die well, were not worth wasting time over anyway. However, the General was aware that such extreme views were not always wise to impose. For now, he would just count himself lucky, that casualties had been relatively low after the initial battle had died down.

Nevertheless, their were two matters that he had no choice but to attend to here, for he could not wait before they were back on their feet.

Barrows and Travis had beds next to each-other at the far end of the ward. They were both awake, when Hammond approached.

"Good afternoon, men." Hammond said, in a tone that made it clear that he wished nothing of the sort upon them. "It's past time for your debrief."

=========================================================================================================================

Nikolai awoke, panting, with sweat beading on his face and chest. The morning air on this island was more humid than anything Nikolai had ever experienced. Of course, there were places underground, the refineries, that had produced large amounts of heat, and even so far north, so many people working side by side, could make the air stuffy in the cramped tunnels of the Lower Levels. Not like this though... To Nikolai, it felt like he was breathing soup.

That was not what was causing him to perspire, however.

Sitting upright, Nikolai kneaded his temples with his hands, as if trying to smooth away the images that still floated around his consciousness. His whole body tingled, with the memory of being aflame, or simply being flame. Nikolai couldn't be certain. Night after night, after night, the dreams came to plague him; and despite spending so much of his time with them, Nikolai still couldn't make sense of anything. The only clue he had, the only remotely tangible thing, was a face who's features he couldn't recall, even seconds after they had burned so brightly in front of him.

Frustrated, Nikolai got to his feet, and crept through the barn where the others slept, in search of some fresh air.

Acolyte was the only other awake yet, sitting cross-legged on the ground outside in that way he did, saying nothing. Nikolai kept his distance so as not to disturb him, slumping against the wall of the barn a few yards behind. From his pocket, the big man took out a faded and well-thumbed old book, and finding his last page, began to read, his massive finger tracing the lines of text, and intermittently mumbling out loud, whenever he came across a grouping of words that he still did not quite recognise by heart.

=========================================================================================================================

The heat of the midday sun beat down on them, as the miniature convoy rolled through the gates to the foothill village. The Talon's current forces being far too large in total for such a rural setting to accommodate, had continued to move east ahead of her, up into the mountains proper. For this detour, she took only those who were necessary, in a small and unassuming convoy of just four vehicles.

When they halted, brakes whining and dust billowing in the market square, The Talon stepped out onto the sand, from the passenger seat of the technical that had been at the head of the convoy. A few of the locals sopped what they were doing to take in her strange appearance. After a few moment, however, they remembered themselves better, and made a show of being very busy with whatever it was they were doing. For her part, The Talon paid them no mind. Instead, she walked around the front of the truck to closer inspect the perimeter wall of a compound that dominated an entire side of the square. Her fingers traced a path along the baked earth, as if connecting the dots, where chunks of wall had been blasted away by bullet and shrapnel impacts, remnants of any one of the dozens of conflicts that had ravaged this region in just the recent past.

"Nahla." she called out, beckoning the young woman to come forward with her metal hand, leaving Riley and the rest in the capable hands of Dietrich.

"You were born in a place not unlike this, were you not?" The Talon asked, once Nahla was at her side.

Acolyte heard Nikolai coming. The sound of his mechanized leg were unmistakable. Still, he did not open is eyes, and Nikolai seemed to fall into his own routine. Reading, by the sound of it.

He maintained silence for a few minutes, but there was no hope for it. Nikolai's arrival had moved his mind back into function. Opening his eyes, he got to his feet and approached the other man.

"Harry Potter, eh?" he asked. "I read that when I was a kid. It's a damn good book." Folding his arms, he looked up at Nikolai. He had promised, after all.

"So, how are you?"

It had been over a day since the meeting downstairs, and Abigail was dreading every minute of it. Before the day was out, the group that was heading for the surface would have been long gone, if everything went according to plan that is. In a way, Abigail didn't want this to happen; she had grown accustomed to seeing Selina here at Gates of Pandemonium least once a day, and she had considered the woman to be a friend. The same could also be said for Lewis and Aggie, after all, they'd only been reunited for a few minutes after a couple of weeks apart; now they were going away again.

With her gone, in essence, Abigail would be the only real piece of eye candy around here, which was going to make things interesting. She tried thinking up something to say to prevent Selina from going, but she knew this had to be done. By now at this point, Selina was on her fourth drink, why she was doing this before such an important task was beyond Abigail's comprehension at the moment.

"One way or another, I suspect we will not see each-other again after today." Selina announced to the remarkably quiet and empty bar. "Before that, I just thought you should know..." Selena raised her glass in a toast, smiling as she spoke. "You make a mean cocktail."

All that she could say in response right now was. "Thanks." Even then it was softly spoken as she was focused on cleaning the bar.

The drive to the village had but a rough one. Despite the nature of their vehicles, the rugged earth still managed to jostle Nahla around quite a bit. Eventually they came to a stop.

"Nahla."

Nahla hopped out of the passenger seat of the truck and fell in next to her leader.

"You were born in a place not unlike this, were you not?"

The Saudi woman nodded. "I was," she said simply. She wore a solemn frown as she took in her surroundings.

******************************************************************************************************************************************************

Lucia couldn't sleep. Sure, she was relieved to find some semblance of peace here, but she couldn't help thinking that this was all temporary. That she'd find out this was just a dream and at any minute she could wake back up in her cell in the Pit.

She felt almost guilty about it. Here she was, someone who spent a mere three months in that living hell, and she still couldn't let it go. She still couldn't just move past it. What about people like Nikolai? People who know only the Pit. Who spent their entire lives down there?

What right did she have to hang on to her nightmares when they paled in comparison to Nikolai's?

No, she had traumatic experiences in the Pit, but those memories aren't what tormented her now. It was simply the idea that she'd one day return. That they never really escaped.

Don't think that way. We can find peace here...

Eyes wide open, Lucia rolled onto her side and recalled the young girl's words from earlier that day.

*******************************************************************************************************************************************************

Judah interrupted Lucia, pressing her index finger against the young woman's lips, "Don't let them hear you say that." She stared intently into Lucia's eyes, this time it wasn't a joke. "There are many of who will understand your troubles and will want to help. Subria and Manyara are not among them." She looked around the area, checking to make sure her guardians were out of earshot. "If you guys end up visiting the commune look for a woman named Christa." she added before standing up and walking away.

*******************************************************************************************************************************************************

Joining a commune? If it meant their days of fighting for survival were over, Lucia would gladly stay on this island. She'd spent all this time thinking about returning to Europe that she'd never even considered she could find a better life somewhere else.

I wonder how the others would feel about it...

Eventually she began to doze off, only to be roused awake when she heard Nikolai shuffling around nearby.

"Harry Potter, eh? I read that when I was a kid. It's a damn good book."

Lucia smiled. She had such a good student.

"So, how are you?"

Though she was never a fan of spying, Lucia couldn't help but eavesdrop on their conversation. It was rare for her to get anything meaningful out of the big guy, but maybe Acolyte could.

"So, if there are any lingering thoughts or feelings that anyone needs to get off their chests, I will hear them out now, and only now."

In an instant, Aggie spoke up.

"It's pretty damn obvious that I'm sick," Aggie started. "I can hold my own but if anytime I have an attack during the escape then you might just have to leave me."

Lewis glared at Aggie. He didn't care if Yu or Clem were there anymore as he raised his voice.

"We are not leaving anybody behind, understand?" Said Lewis, pointing at Aggie accusingly. "We have come too far for you to be saying things like that. I thought you we're stronger than that. I thought you were-"

"What did you think I was going to be like when you 'rescued' me? Who do you think I was?" Aggie snapped back. "You were in this hellhole for only a few days. I was here for years and I learned a few things here and there like how quickly a person can die. I learned that there were no good people either. All the good people died first and what's left are the ones who want to survive. You wanted to do good and I appreciate that but right now, you need to be a realist. I've been sick for years ever since I ran away from the Piranhas and I don't know how much my body has left in me. Everybody dies Lewis, it's just a matter if you're willing to accept that and move on because everything else will. Thousands have died here and will continue to die here. The universe won't even bat an eye."

"I just want things back to when they used to be." Lewis said in an almost childlike manner. "We're all we have left. You shouldn't forget that."

"I haven't." Aggie hugged Lewis for the first time in a long time. It was brief but the sentiment was there, ephemeral like a spark, "Just keep up okay?"

"Of course," Lewis said with a restrained smile. It was then that he realized Yu and Clem were still there but he looked to them confidently, "I think it's given that the same goes for me. Selina needs to make it out, period. It will be a pleasure operating alongside the both of you. I hope I can do you proud."

When Yu had given his new team leave to air their concerns. He hadn't intended to start an argument right off the bat. He was just about to shut the squabbling siblings down, when they seemed to find a resolution of their own accord, saving him a lot of trouble.

He nodded at Aggie. "I trust you to know your own strength, and I never intended to let the life of one individual jeopardise the mission. From here on out, we keep moving forward, no matter the cost. Having said that." his tone grew marginally less firm "If you're part of my team, that makes your well-being important to the mission. I can't promise much, but once we get out of here, I'll see to it that you receive any medical attention that I can get my hands on. No martyrs, we don't have enough people on our side for that. Understood?"

===========================================================================================================================

"I read that when I was a kid. It's a damn good book."

Reluctantly (for he'd just been starting to get into it), Nikolai closed the book when Acolyte approached him. He knew he could not maintain focus on both reading and conversation simultaneously. He wasn't skilled enough in either discipline yet. Besides, while Nikolai was still figuring out the subtleties of 'friendship' as normal people experienced it, he was growing more comfortable with the idea that Acolyte was, at the very least, a close equivalent in Nikolai's mind, and he had just enough understanding of social cues to know that when a friend is trying to talk to you, you should give them your full attention.

"So, how are you?"

Nikolai made a noise halfway between a grunt and a sigh, tilting his head back against the wall of the shack. Looking up at the morning sky, he saw the warm, heavy mist that was blowing in from the bay, shrouding them in a grey haze.

"I never sleep for more than a few hours." He said in his improving English. "Underground, it was dangerous to be caught in deep sleep, so you learn not to. Then, when we escape, we had to keep moving, trying to find food, shelter, so I don't sleep. When we cross the sea, the moving of the ship meant that I still don't sleep. I get here, there's nothing to fear, nothing else to do, and I think maybe... maybe now I can sleep..."

At his sides, Nikolai's hands dug into the long grass, tearing blades up by the roots.

"I can't sleep." He admitted, his jaw tightening. "When I sleep, I dream; and when I dream... what about you? Can you sleep?"

It occurred to Nikolai that perhaps he should ask if Acolyte's sickness was affecting him, if he perhaps needed Nikolai to find a doctor. There had to be one, somewhere, in the town below. Furthermore, he should ask him if he had told Lucia, and if not now, when. It seemed however, that despite how clear the questions were in his head, finding the right words for them out loud was... difficult.

=========================================================================================================================

"I was,"

The Talon abandoned her study of the compound wall, and looked at the other woman.

"Bad memories?" she inquired "I apologise. There's no need to look so glum though. You've come a long way since then, and each new day that passes in this world is it's own victory."

She smiled, putting her flesh and bone arm on Nahla's shoulder.

"I want to keep you close today. We have important work to do here, and the presence of a, relatively, local face at my side should help ease any tensions. Besides..." she added with a wink. "It's been too long since we last caught up."

=========================================================================================================================

"Thanks."

A laboured silence followed, as Abigail continued with her chores, and Selena nursed her drink. Both were inwardly counting away the minutes.

"Look, Abi..." Selena began, running a finger round the rim of her glass awkwardly. "It could be along time before you see another friendly face. I'm not entirely sure I count as such, but, just in case... if there's anything you wanted to say, any request you want to make of me for once I'm out of here..." The sentence tapered out into more silence before Selena could quite finish it off.

"When I sleep, I dream; and when I dream... what about you? Can you sleep?"

"More often than not," Acolyte replied. "I do have bad dreams now and then, though. About this," he patted his chest, right where the swastika was, hidden by his shirt. "About a few other things. But meditation helps, with the dreams and insomnia, which is a fancy way of saying you lie awake all night. One of the first things I learned at the temple was how to empty my mind of all things, and make a clean slate."

"Look, Abi..." Selena muttered, running her ring finger rather awkwardly around the rim of her glass. "It could be along time before you see another friendly face. I'm not entirely sure I count as such, but, just in case... if there's anything you wanted to say, any request you want to make of me for once I'm out of here..."

"Then now would be the time to speak up I take it?" Abigail asked rhetorically, finishing off the sentence before putting down her cleaning gear. She then began drumming her finger across the counter, her eyes darting left or right before centering them back on Selena.

"One moment please." Abigail added before taking off her apron then headed upstairs, returning a minute or so later with a slightly battered envelope.

"Here, take this." She said, pushing the envelope in front of Selena.

"I know it's unlikely that you will, but if for some unknown reason you find yourself in Toronto, be sure to look up Tristan and Felicia Nyte; they're my parents as you can imagine. This was supposed to be the letter I was going to send them during the last mail delivery, but with everything that's happened, never got the chance. And probably won't if everything down here goes to hell."

"Second, if you ever do find whatever it is you're looking for out there, and you make your way back to them; I know this may seem I'm asking much, but bring the hammer of retribution down on these psychos, let them taste justice for that which they have done." Her tone sounded stronger for a moment, as if something had begun to awoken.

"Finally, to end on a lighter note, in all the time that I've spent here, there are fewer people which I could consider calling friend. You Selena, despite everything that's happened, and some of the stuff you've done, you're a person I'd consider calling a friend. It's a shame that it didn't happen under better circumstances. Think this calls for a drink." Abigail remarked with a smirk as she knelt down and searched for something underneath the counter, coming back up with a bottle of rum and two low-ball glass tumblers. She began pouring a measure of rum into the glasses.

"A special bottle of rum that my dad gave me when I came over here. However, I rarely found time to drink the stuff until now." Abigail then placed a glass in front of Selena.

"A toast is in order."

"I apologise. There's no need to look so glum though. You've come a long way since then, and each new day that passes in this world is it's own victory."

Nahla tried her best to appreciate the sentiment. Sometimes it was hard to tell when the woman was being genuine or simply telling you what you wanted to hear.

"I want to keep you close today. We have important work to do here, and the presence of a, relatively, local face at my side should help ease any tensions. Besides..."

So she was needed for the color of her skin, was she? Nahla was hardly surprised.

"It's been too long since we last caught up."

Nahla met the Talon's hypnotic gaze, fell prey to her contagious smile, and like that, she was hers. Nahla nodded with a stupid grin on her face. "Yeah," she whispered, "it really has been too long." Looking back towards the village, she crossed her arms over her chest. "So, where do we start?"

Riley stroked his beard as he watched Nahla and Talon talking. Even with his sharp hearing, he was unable to make out anything comprehensible. He did, however, see the grin of obedience spread across Nahla's face like treacle. It was creepy how their leader could do that to people.

Feeling eyes on his back, he turned to see Dietrich giving him a considering look. He snapped his fingers, breaking the other man out of a reverie. "I know I'm easy on the eyes, but it's rude to stare, mate."

"One of the first things I learned at the temple was how to empty my mind of all things, and make a clean slate."

Nikolai looked sideways at Acolyte, frowning. He didn't quite understand what the other man was talking about.

"Some d-people, back underground... used needles and pills, to make them calm, to sleep, to make voices go away..." Nikolai inquired, unusually timid. He'd noticed the track marks on Acolyte's arms in the past, but they were old and faded. He'd never seen the other man using in the time they'd known each-other. If that was what was being offered, Nikolai wasn't sure what to make of it.

===========================================================================================================================

Selena stared sombrely down at the envelope she had been given. It seemed such a small thing, in light of everything else. Except... perhaps it wasn't so small? For the first time in a long time, Selena was forced to think about her own parents; how long it had been since she'd last spoken to either of them, and how much even then had been left unsaid. Would she ever see them again?

Nodding, she tucked the envelope away out of sight.

"A toast is in order."

Selena smiled again, for Abigail had helped her figure out exactly what she had to say.

"To still having something to lose." She replied, raising her own glass high.

=========================================================================================================================

"So, where do we start?"

"Well, why not from where we left off?" The Talon said, her own smile broadening. "While we still have the time."

She draped her arm round the other woman's shoulder (which emphasised how The Talon was a whole head taller than her companion), and began walking around the square with her.

"The last time I saw you, you were heading off to the insurrection in Cyprus, I recall..." she began "I heard the reports, of course. That was deftly done. Did you enjoy your time there?"

"Some d-people, back underground... used needles and pills, to make them calm, to sleep, to make voices go away..."

"No," Acolyte replied, unusually harshly. Taking a breath, he continued more calmly. "No, you don't ever want to get involved with that shit, Nikolai. It'll fuck you up, and make you lose control. After a certain point, it's... it's the drugs that call the shots, not you. No, what I'm talking about is what you might call... inner peace. You don't need anything but yourself, and somewhere quiet. And maybe a disc with some binaural beats, but that isn't necessary."

The more Acolyte talked, the less Nikolai was understanding. His frown deepened in frustration.

"Inner peace..." Nikolai parroted, pondering this alien concept. For as long as he could remember, it had been when he was fighting and killing when everything had seemed simple, perhaps even peaceful, inside his head at least. He got the impression, however, that this wasn't what Acolyte had in mind either.

"How?" he asked, eventually.

"I heard the reports, of course. That was deftly done. Did you enjoy your time there?"

"I enjoyed the weather," Nahla mused. "I've spent a lot of time on the Mediterranean, but it was always on the coast. Out in the middle of the sea, though?" She grinned and whistled sharply. "Beautiful. It was too bad I didn't have time to go for a swim. Too busy caught in the crossfire between the Greeks and Turks. You'd think after the world had nuked itself five times over we'd have gotten over the grudges of the old world."

She shrugged and looked to her leader. "You should come along next time," Nahla suggested. "Let's take a big vacation after all this. Enjoy the beautiful world we liberated. How's that sound?"

"No, you don't ever want to get involved with that shit, Nikolai. It'll fuck you up, and make you lose control. After a certain point, it's... it's the drugs that call the shots, not you..."

Acolyte...

They had never really talked about his addictions much before. Lucia had always been too afraid to offend him.

We always talk about my problems...

Lucia felt guilty. Maybe she should spend more time learning about her closest friend.

"How?"

Lucia smiled sadly. He was trying so hard to adjust. Trying so hard to understand the world outside the Pit.

You'll adjust, Nikolai. One day you'll be just like any other bloke on the street. You'll see.
