"This world isn't so big and scary after all, is it?"

Nikolai smiled at her, but at the back of his mind, he still couldn't help but nurse a few doubts. Maybe the world wasn't so big and scary to Nikolai, but what would it make of him?

"Don't be so sure, you've never been to China."

Nikolai was revealed from finding the right words to voice his thoughts by Acolyte's arrival. One look between them told Nikolai why the other man had come. He need not be present for this conversation. Indeed, this had to be a private moment.

"They have kept me cooped up in here too long." He announced, as cheerily as his gruff tones were able. "I think I will go breathe some fresh air."

With that, he left his two friends alone, and went in search of the hot springs.

=======================================================================================================================================

The commander of the Venture detachment sent to RACDI-Alpha was one Major Harris Norton, a man in his late forties, but still in peak physical condition, and with the hard-cut lines of a professional soldier. It was clear that this was a man who had risen up the chain of command through being the best man for the job, nothing more and nothing less. Selena was glad someone like him was in charge, even if she couldn't help but feel a little derisive towards his rigidity. She reflected that Lee probably would have liked him.

As it was, Major Norton was less than impressed with what Selena had to tell him, or rather, what she didn't.

"Let me get this straight..." he began, with all the tone of someone who had perfectly understood Selena's request, but wanted to see if she'd have the balls to say it twice. "You want to requisition a small arsenal of my military equipment, in the middle of an offensive operation, for a personal escort, most of which is currently recuperating in our infirmary?"

"That is correct." Selena's answer was firm.

"Along with a helicopter and pilots, with whom you wish to abscond?"

"Yes."

"You refuse to tell me anything about where you plan on taking my equipment and my men, and for what purpose; and, not even as a parting gesture of good faith, will you give me any intel of what's currently happening inside RACDI-Alpha?!"

"Under Venture Horizon Operational Directive 330-B," Selena responded, unperturbed "It is within my authority to-"

"I know the damn procedures!" Major Norton interrupted "I've filled you in on the events of the outside world during your captivity, so it may not have escaped your notice that normal procedure is up in the air right now. We were dispatched here over a week ago to confirm the fate of RACDI-Alpha, and to then await further orders on retaking the facility, and in that time we've found out nothing. The entire facility is radio-silent, surface activity is minimal, all of the surveillance equipment that we have deployed to try and ascertain what's happening underground has been blocked, and not a single soul has appeared outside the perimeter, until you. Now, you're telling me that you need to leave the theatre, but won't tell me why? With that in mind, Ms. Hernandez, what reason do I have to trust you?"

"Because the situation is more dire than you know." Selena replied "It's a COMP-5 Major."

That got his attention. Norton said nothing for several seconds, though his mouth and the corner of his eye twitched a couple of times, and his knuckles were white gripping the desk in front of him.

"I see." he said eventually, his voice lowered. "You should attend to your men. I will... make arrangements."

"Thank you, Major." Selena responded, as they rose and shook hands. She sympathised with the man's frustration, but the situation was too fragile to risk the advantage that heir escape had given them. It had been a gamble to tell him even that little, but Selena had decided that she could at least trust him to understand.

Over the past few hours, the medics had done a good job of patching Yu up, and he now limped across the medical tent without so much as a wince. They'd still probably be reluctant to let him go without a few days of bed rest at least, but that kind of time wasn't a luxury that they possessed. Besides, Yu knew his own limits well enough.

"How are you doing?" he asked Aggie, as he arrived at her bedside, standing next to Lewis. The years of cruelty and neglect that she had suffered down in The Pit, required far greater attention than Yu's few cuts and scrapes. She was currently sat up in bed, a cannula in her arm and monitoring nodes feeding in and out of her gown, providing constant data on her condition.

"Well not having to worry about getting shanked is quite nice." Aggie said groggily. The morphine and medicines had their effect on Aggie and even as she spoke, they were pumping her veins full of medicine but she had worse. "Apparently I had some bad disease from my time down there. No surprise, I know. I'll spare you the gory details but otherwise I'm fine."

"Yeah, even with all the morphine and medicine, she's been more talkative as of late." Lewis said, nursing a few scrapes but was otherwise fine.

"I'm right here, you know." Aggie spoke up but as soon as she did, she gave off a cough. It was minor compared to the other outbursts she's had but it was apparent that whatever she had, was still there. Lewis leaned over and patted her on the back before she swiped him away. "I told you, I'm fine."

"For the most part, yeah." Lewis said before turning back to Yu. "Any word on Selena? She's been with the CO for quite some time now."

The African sun was hot and bright even through the immense foliage overhead. Over the rising and falling earth strewn with a rainbow of plantlife, Riley walked. At his feet, a half grown wolf cub dashed here and there, snapping at butterflies and pausing to sniff the earth before racing off again. Clingiing intimately to Riley's arm was a tall blonde woman with pale blue eyes, that when they were not taking in the fresh sights of the lush jungle with a childlike wonder were fixed lovingly on him.

For an eternity they seemed to walk through a heaven on earth, silent but for birdsong and the crunch of their feet on the earth.

He couldn't have said when exactly things changed. All he knew was that all at once he noticed the sun's warm caress had become an oppressive, smothering heat. Casting around, he found no sign of Odin. Then up ahead, a figure stepped out. A tall man with mahogony skin and tribal tattoos, with a large knife on one hip, and a bow in hand.

The next thing Riley knew, he and his wife were running. An oncoming tide of flame was licking at their heels, and the silence was gone; lost to the sounds of gazelle horn hunting horns, of dozens of running feet, the twanging of bowstrings and the sharp reports of gunfire.

The tribe had set alight the land they loved so much just to see him dead, and it was hell on earth.

Suddenly, he felt a wrenching feeling and the coldness of a broken grip. Twisting to see behind him, he fell. As he looked on, he saw his wife sprawled, clutching a bloody leg, as the burning branches above her creaked, broke and fell. Then she was gone amid the flame and smoke. Riley was screaming now, rooted to the spot. The only thing that got him moving again was the sudden appearance of a familiar pair of yellow eyes through the smoke. He poured all the strength he has into running, his vision blurred by tears. Finally he broke through the treeline and staggered to a halt, standing over the edge of a vast waterfall.

Riley heard footsteps behind him, and some utterance in the trival dialect, lost under the sound of crashing waves. Before he could turn, there was a gunshot, and he felt the wind knocked out of him. His feet sliding on the spray-wetted rock, he fell, the full expanse of the waterfall twisting out to meet him.

Riley soon realized he was awake, sat up with his head in his hands, howling like an animal. Tears in his eyes were heavy so as to obscure his vision, and when he closed his eyes to blink them away, he saw her face again, contorted in fear and pain as she burned.

"Fuck!" Nahla shouted as she jolted to consciousness. She had been completely out of it before Riley's outburst, and was still shocked from the sudden scare.

The instincts she'd developed through years of warfare had betrayed her. She sighed heavily and lowered the pistol she'd brandished from under her pillow.

She had nothing to fear. It was just a lover's bad dream.

"Riley," she whispered softly, rubbing his back. "Riley. Listen to me, it's okay. It was just a dream. It wasn't real."

He was covered in sweat and shivering intensly.

"It's okay, Riley," she repeated. "It's okay."

"She fell," he muttered. "She fell and I left her. She burned because of me."

"Who?" she asked, continuing to rub his back.

Gently, Riley moved away from her so as to get up from the bed. Approaching where his bag lay, he silently took out a handmade clay jar and opened it. Inside was a small quantity of turquoise paste. Licking his finger he rubbed it over the mixture and rubbed it on his gums. The taste was acrid, but nowhere near as bitter as it had been when he'd made it fresh. Well, that explained that.

"My wife," he said finally. "Amanda."

Nahla watched him with a cocked eyebrow. Propping herself into a full sitting position, she wrapped her naked body in the thin linen sheets and remained silent for a long while, unsure what to say.

"I'm sorry," she finally whispered. "I never knew you were married."

Slumping back down on the bed, Riley sighed. "When I found Odin freezing to death out in the mountains in the Scandanavian Republic, I took him to a hospital. I had no idea where a vet might be, so that was all I could do. It was her dad's practice, and she was the only one on call. She put him in one of those baby incubators."

"Sounds like a stand-up woman," Nahla commented. "How long were--I, well, we don't have to talk about this if you don't want to."

"Two years," Riley replied, waving away her concern. After a pause, he said, "she always told me to laugh more. Said I was too serious about everything."

Nahla offered a subdued laugh. "Oh, is that so," she said. "I suppose I have her to blame for your charm?"

Riley smiled. It was the smile he usually wore. The facade, and not the one reserved for when he and Nahla were alone together. "Probably," he said.

"Come here," she whispered, patting a spot on the bed next to her. "You shouldn't be alone at a time like this."

"Actually," he said a tad bashfully, "I uh... I think I'll take a walk. Clear my head, y'know?" Leaning over, he embraced her tightly and kissed her on the cheek, before getting up and heading for the door.

Nahla frowned as she watched him leave. "I'll be here," she promised him.

"I know you will," Riley said as he pulled on a shirt. Standing at the door, he hesitated. "Nahla?"

"Yes, Riley?"

"Promise me you won't fall."

With that, he left, fleeing embarrassment before she could respond.

"It's... You! What about you? Are you lying with anyone?"

'Lying with anyone? Who the fuck talks like that?'

The young girl raised a her brow as she walked outside. If she wanted to hear someone babble on about 'lying' with people she would have chosen to spend the day with Micheal and Verra instead. Leaning against the building, she waited for Lucia and Nikolai. She had been glued to Lucia's side since they'd arrived, it was probably best to give the two some space.

After a few minutes she spotted Nikolai wandering past her.

"Hey, where you goin'?" she yelled as she ran up beside him.

"Hey, where you goin'?"

Nikolai stopped at the sound of Judah's voice, and waited for her to get into step with him before resuming his stride. Of course, to 'keep in step' with Nikolai, Judah would have to keep up a brisk jog.

"I need to... clean." Nikolai answered. 'Bathe' was not a word of the English language he was familiar with yet, so in response to the slight confusion on Judah's face, he mimed lathering his torso and armpits for emphasis, with the utmost sincerity.

"The Arab Protectorate will get our forces into Central Europe, through the routed into the balkans that they still control. That will bypass The Ignite Solutions and Venture Horizon forces in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, who will be on high alert for the summit. Once we reach Switzerland, we will link up with the delegates from Helios International, and enter Geneva as part of their entourage..."

The Talon half-listened as the three advisors who she had called to her chambers droned on. She didn't really need them to recite the plan. It was her masterpiece, after all, and she had been delicately applying the brush strokes for years. She was confident, assured... but still, she could not escape restlessness now that she was so close. So, she had decided to satisfy their ego's for this evening, while her mind dwelled on less vital, but more concerning things.

"... their forces should return tomorrow. There's nothing else left to discuss face to face, and to keep them living under each-other's feet for any longer than we have to is asking for more trouble than we had in the markets earlier today."

"They will want to make the most of our hospitality." Dietrich replied "They don't want to be seen as being sent away by us. For as much as they dislike all their company, they will each compete to stay the longest."

The other advisor made a derisive noise, but Dietrich was quick to head him off.

"It is all so trivial. Yet, now is the time for careful diplomacy. They may fear us, but for a short period, we are now in their power. Mistress..." he turned to her "wouldn't you agree?"

The Talon looked up at the pair of them with stony eyes.

"Neither detachment will be leaving this compound." she said.

Dietrich's impenetrable manner faltered for the slightest moment, when he began. "Mistress, I..."

"In a foolish and short-sighted attempt to strike at their enemies, LTIP militants will attempt to murder us all in our beds tonight." The Talon continued, cooly. "Our people suspect treachery, and will be quick to mobilise, sustaining minimal casualties. Eventually, all the LTIP fighters who desecrated this place of parley will be eliminated. However, in our efforts to fight off the attack, we will be unable to reach the forces of Helios and the Arab Protectorate, who are taken by surprise, and slaughtered."

Dietrich was, of course, quick in his comprehension. Even so, the unusual flicker of doubt remained on his face.

"Mistress... If I may, it seems I am blind to what we might gain from such action, especially when offset with the risk..."

"We have nothing to fear." The Talon reassured him "These men have insulted us by there mere presence, and more besides, since they arrived. If I let the transgression of their existence go unanswered, our people will feel tainted, and that will surely fester into doubt. I will not allow that to happen. After tonight, everyone involved in this mission will follow the plan, safe in the knowledge that our 'allies' hold nothing over us."

"Helios and the Protectorate will surely suspect..." The other advisor tried to interject, having cottoned on.

"We will provide convincing evidence to support our claim. In any case, they have the agreements that they sent these men here for, and are too blinded by greed to pull out now for the sake of a drop of their own blood. That will be all."

The Talon was left alone without another word, and set to sharpening her balded fingers. It had been too long since she had caressed mortal flesh with these implements of her design. For Nahla's sake, she has kept light on such contentious pursuits while they were close. However, the urge to see another soul beneath their skin was surely the cause of her restlessness.

She would make sure a fair few were kept alive for her tonight. She needed to be fully satisfied before they departed once more.

"Any word on Selena? She's been with the CO for quite some time now."

"None so far." replied Yu. "But, I get the feel that if we weren't making any progress, we'd know by now."

It was then when Selena made her appearance at the tent. Yu, despite his injuries, was quick to stand at attention, although Selena had no real rank over him; and, even after saving his life, he had not forgotten all the reasons he had to mistrust her.

Old habits just died hard, it would seem.

"How did it go?" he asked.

"As well as could be expected." Selena answered, smiling. "We're getting what we need. He wasn't happy about it, but... one way or another, you can't ignore a COMP-5."

Yu eyed Selena suspiciously. Never having actually worked for Venture Horizon, Yu was for once not familiar with the military jargon.

"What do you know?" he said to her.

Selena sighed and rubbed the ridge of her brow.

"When I first came to RACDI-Alpha, I had a team..." she began. "They all had years of experience at the company, were respected experts in their fields... and had all passed a Level-5 security vetting process. Even so, one of them, Le-Saux, betrayed us when the facility was attacked. It was through him that we first learned about the affiliation to The Songbirds."

"I'm guessing you don't pass Level-5 at Venture Horizon with a fake ID?" Yu quipped, seeing already where this was going.

"You do not." Selena affirmed. "It's the highest security check outside of the executive board itself. If Le-Saux was a Songbird, and could compromise Venture Horizon at Level-5, then the level of orchestration that we face goes much higher than people dressing up in Shao-Long uniforms to attack us. These people must have spent several years infiltrating the fabric of the most powerful organisations in the world today."

"Lee suspected someone was trying to start a war." Yu continued. "If they have agents that deep in all the major players, pulling the strings..."

He didn't need to finish that sentence. The gravity of the situation was clear to everyone.

"That's why I had to keep it light on intel with the Major." Selena told them "Right now, we can safely assume that whoever's behind this doesn't know that anyone's escaped from RACDI-Alpha. That's just about the only advantage we have. If the enemy is everywhere, then everyone we involve ourselves with from this point on is potentially a threat, either directly, or by proxy."

Somewhere, back in the Upper Levels of The Pit, General Hammond was making someone's life hell...

"GET. ME. BARROWS!" he roared "AND ASSEMBLE THE OFFICERS. NOW!"

It was safe to assume that the General was officially done playing nice.

"GET. ME. BARROWS! AND ASSEMBLE THE OFFICERS. NOW!"

Luckily -and he used that word loosely- Barrows was already outside the door. He'd already scanned the wreckage of the car he'd blasted and heard the less than pleasing reports from the other songbirds who were on pursuer duty. Safe to say they'd shit the bed on this one. Just who the hell were they dealing with here? It was like this lot had a guardian angel or something. Realistically speaking a human being had no right being able to do the kinds of things these dick-bags had pulled off. It was like they were living in a movie at this point and Barrows had forgotten to make friends with the director.

'And my world used to be grim and gritty. Barrows mused. He'd still never forgive this prison for not being somewhere in the Pacific. If the place was determined to be crazy the least it could do was be sexy as well. Ah whatever, time to face the music.

"You rang?" He chirped, feeling the drain of the day as he stepped into the office. "Safe to say we're in the shit then? Can't just hope they get eaten by wolves." And of course they were still being jammed. "We need to get ready for a beating, Ham. That or leave this place in our dust. 'Cus I'll be honest, I don't trust these hardcore criminals to find their arses with their elbows."

" If the enemy is everywhere, then everyone we involve ourselves with from this point on is potentially a threat, either directly, or by proxy."

"Then I assume we won't be heading towards a nice vacation just yet then..." Aggie said, sitting up from her position albeit slowly. "What about Lewis and I then? I'm sure you'll need some help getting wherever you need to go."

"Not so fast, Aggie." Lewis said cautiously. "But yeah, if you're saying is true then finding people to trust is going to be few and far between."

"Exactly." Aggie swung her legs to the end of the bed and cracked her neck despite the IV still in her arm. She seemed relatively anxious for someone that had just escaped from a prison. Now that they were free, Aggie expected another feeling than she was experiencing now. She didn't feel liberated or joyful as she wanted too. The prison was still with her even when wasn't inside of it. She could feel it in her bones and in her lungs that the danger and dread was still out there which she needed to look out for. She hated that feeling but it was what kept her alive for so long.

"Out of the frying pan... and into the oven." Aggie solemnly thought to herself.

"What about Lewis and I then? I'm sure you'll need some help getting wherever you need to go."

Selena and Yu exchanged a look. Aggie was looking batter than any time since they'd known her, but she was still a long way from 'healthy' They had no idea what lay ahead of them now. Could Aggie take the strain? On the other hand, it was clear Lewis wasn't going to be going anywhere where his sister couldn't follow, which would leave just the two of them against the world.

Besides, they could do worse for allies than people who were tough enough to survive RACDI-Alpha, even if they did come out with scars...

"May I come in?" asked Major Norton, as he stood at the threshold of the medical tent, looking grave.

"By all means Major." Selena smiled. They owed the man a lot of courtesy after all.

"Just in case you wanted my personal opinion..." the man continued, as he entered and scanned them all with his gaze. "You people are insane. Whatever you're expecting to find wherever it is you're planning on going, none of you look in shape to face it. For you four to go alone is suicide."

"We know the risks Major." Selena replied "But the stakes demand-"

"I know that." The Major cut her off "Or rather, I know you wouldn't be doing this without a very good reason. I didn't come here because I intend to stand in your way. The opposite, in fact. If I'm going to be the last friendly face you people see in a long time, then I'm going to give you all the help that is within my power to bestow."

Surprisingly, a small smile curled on his face as he said this.

"So, on your feet, if you can. There's something you all need to see."

====================================================================================================================================

"We need to get ready for a beating, Ham. That or leave this place in our dust. 'Cus I'll be honest, I don't trust these hardcore criminals to find their arses with their elbows."

The General's eyebrow twitched, but he said nothing. At this point, his rage surpassed admonishing Barrows for speaking out of turn.

"You and Commander Ali will round up all Venture Horizon personnel still active on the surface, and bring them down to the Upper Levels." he ordered through gritted teeth. "The escapees could not have put their plan into action without co-ordination from someone on the outside, and before the day is done I will find out who it was. Go. Now."

Done with Barrows, Hammond raised his voice to address the entire room.

"From this point on, our forces must be ready to repel any external attack at a moment's notice!" He told them "We can no longer afford distractions from within. The time for winning hearts and minds is past! If the forces who move against us in this place want to play at being the valiant rebels, then we shall see how many innocents they are willing to see suffer, before they emerge from the shadows to challenge us!"

====================================================================================================================================

It was a long climb up to the hot springs, and Nikolai was even more eager for a bath when he arrived. The climate in this place was certainly not what he had become used to in the past decades. Already shirtless, he quickly removed the rest of his clothes, and deposited them in a heap, on a rock bedside the pool, before sliding in. He couldn't help but groan out loud with satisfaction, as the steam rose all around him. The water was glorious, and every passing second that Nikolai was submerged in it, he could feel months, even years, of strain and injury leaving his muscles. It was all he could do not to slip beneath the surface of the water completely. He might drown, but in that moment, he didn't mind so much...

Nikolai was brought back to his senses by movement over by the small waterfall that fed the pool. In his eagerness to try the water, Nikolai hadn't noticed that the spring was already occupied. Suddenly embarrassed, Nikolai stood up and went to leave, just as Natalia, naked as Nikolai himself was, emerged from under the torrent of water.

For what seemed like several minutes, the two just stood and looked at each-other in stunned silence. Nikolai, his embarrassment of just a moment before suppressed by several other feeling running rampant through his brain, could do little else but take in Natalia's lithe, athletic form, with shining water running in rivulets down her smooth, pale skin. Natalia, for her part, couldn't seem to stop her gaze from travelling down below Nikolai's waistline, her eyebrows shooting up into her dripping hairline when her eyes arrived at their destination. Returning to her senses, her face went scarlet in a flash, and she looked away, attempting to cover herself with her hands. Nikolai did the same (though covering himself was now more difficult than it might have been a few seconds before. Simultaneously, the two started stammering out apologies and excuses, drowning each other out in a mess of babbled words.

"I was - erm - just - um - just finishing up!" Natalia finally broke through, her voice sounding unnaturally high and flowery. "I will go... you - er - have fun!"

Blushing even brighter, Natalia grabbed her own clothes, and fled without even waiting to dress herself. Now alone, Nikolai sank to his knees, and with a groan of exasperation, fell face first into the water.

He might have drowned, but, in that moment, Nikolai didn't mind so much.

It had been a while since the others had made their big escape, and given what she had overheard from some of the guards that had drifted back to the Gates, is that it had been a success. Whilst Abigail was relieved that they had made it; the realisation had dawned on her that it was likely in the not too distant future that she was going to have to answer a lot of difficult questions. No surprise to anyone that herself and Selena were close so to speak, so if anyone was as likely to know something about the escape, it would be Abigail.

"You alright Abi?" Zach asked as he saw Abigail just absent mindedly cleaning the same spot at the front of the bar.

"What does it look like Zach? Of course I'm not." Abigail replied in a frustrated manner.

"What's gotten into you?" Zach asked, taking a step back, not having seen an angry side to Abigail before.

"Isn't it obvious? With the others gone, chances are, we're going to have to pick up the pieces; and Hammond is likely to be infuriated, he'll probably take out on us just as much as his men. Listen, Zach, do you think you can hold the fort for a while? There are some things I need to take care of first. I'll be at my room should you need me."

"Of course Abi, you know I've got your back." Zach remarked, remembering what Lee had told him before the Colonel made his escape.

"Thanks." Abigail said, taking off her apron and hanging it up before leaving the Gates of Pandemonium.

When she got back, Abigail merely sighed at first, thinking over what may happen for a brief moment. Eventually though Abigail decided that she'd need to stow her things away in case things happened, in the storage trunk that she'd been given on her first week here at RACDI-Alpha. What went in was mainly her prized possessions, things that reminded her of home, of her family and friends back in Canada. With the trunk now full, she hid it underneath the bed, hoping no one would find it later.

Abigail then lay on top of the bed and awaited the inevitable.

"You and Commander Ali will round up all Venture Horizon personnel still active on the surface, and bring them down to the Upper Levels... then we shall see how many innocents they are willing to see suffer, before they emerge from the shadows to challenge us!"

Barrows sighed internally, this whole job felt like they were stumbling along three steps behind the mad menagerie of The Pit. The Songbirds had dealt with crazy before, sure, but then they'd usually had their own brand of crazy nutters to throw into the mix. The only thing wildcards like these tended to have trouble dealing with was hard cases like themselves who had just the right bent. Fluid bastards that wouldn't mind ditching pride or reason for a second just to sweep the table clean. This lot, the makeshift army Hammond had made for himself, they were all too straight and narrow for this kind of job, too soldierly.

Something for him to mull on, maybe. Maybe from here he could plant the seeds of an idea in that bruised mire of a brain. Time would tell for ol' Mr Barrows. In the mean time, it looked like things were going to turn into a repeat of the job in Vienna where he had to break that old lady's legs. Not that he tore himself up over this kind of thing but it would be nice if someone else stepped up to this kind of thing for a change. Times like this made him worry he was getting typecast.

Fuck it. Hammond was done and Barrows and Ali had their orders. They gathered up a smattering of men and went on their way. Barrows knew their first stop on the tour of pain (he just assumed there would be pain) and they went for the bar where the remaining Venture staff claimed sanctuary. He still didn't get the bar. A mess hall or an officers quarters sure, but a prison with a bar! No doubt the very idea made Ali furious! Again, Barrows was assuming. Like he could be bothered to learn things about his coworkers.

The front door to the bar slammed inwards and clattered against the wall as its hinges went ape-mental. "Hidey-hi everybody!" Barrows cheered to all and sundry. "Would you believe it we have a community lock in going on in the upper levels. I'm talkin' cherry aaaid, marshmallooooows, peanut butter treats- whatever. Come on down, I insist." He was all smiles and good cheer.

'And please, someone make me break their face.' Or punch them in the soft bits, he wasn't picky.

Zachary was mostly keeping to himself after Abigail had left, only interacting with the patrons when they wanted more booze. That all changed when Barrows came bounding through the door, nearly breaking it off its hinges. "Hidey-hi everybody!" Said the large man with a manic looking grin plastered on his face. "Would you believe it we have a community lock in going on in the upper levels. I'm talkin' cherry aaaid, marshmallooooows, peanut butter treats- whatever. Come on down, I insist."

"In that case the bar will have to be closed for the duration, since either me or Abigail have to be here manning it at all times. And if you're wondering where Miss Nyte is, she left a few minutes ago back to her room for some reason." Zachary said in response, trying his best to remain calm.

Sitting down across from Lucia, Acolyte set about constructing a rollup, staring at his hands while he spoke. "Do you remember when we first met? How occasionally I'd collapse, and how that was sometimes... less than convenient?"

"You mean 'never convenient'?" Lucia corrected with a small chuckle. Though she joked, she knew there was something wrong. What was he about to tell her?

Acolyte laughed along with her before pressing on. "And you'll remember while we were travelling those months that it went away. Before those people took us in and I had to ah... Wrestle Nikolai."

Lucia nodded, her grin all but gone now.

"Well after that yellow eyed guy took us away to get cleaned up, the doctor noticed some stuff." Lighting the cigarette, he took a heavy drag and let the smoke flood out of his mouth. "It's a brain tumor, Lucia. I don't know if it's operable, and I don't know how much worse it's gotten since we left those guys. All I know is I'm still standing." He took another drag.

Lucia blinked heavily, staring at Acolyte with a dumbfounded expression. After a few moments her expression softened. "Why didn't you tell me?" she whimpered.

"Whenever I imagined it, I'd see... that look on your face..." He gestured at her with the cigarette. "I couldn't do it. I'm sorry."

"We need to take you to a doctor," she said, her voice still weak. "We need to find you a real doctor."

"Apparently they have some good people here," Acolyte replied neutrally. "I'm going to see them before anything else. Besides that..." He reached into the pocket of his jeans and produced a scrap of paper with a Holland address on it, underneath the name of a law firm. He offered this to her. "If something does happen, these guys have my will. It's all yours. Tell 'em who you are and you're collecting what Samuel Van Der Lind left you."

After a moment's hesitation, he added, "there's a decent amount there. Enough to make sure you're okay."

She forced the piece of paper back on him and a shook her head. "Don't talk like that!" she shouted. "We'll beat this... we'll beat this, okay?!"

Did he just tell her his real name?

"Maybe," he replied, taking her hand and pushing the paper into it before taking the cigarette from his mouth. "But I promised I'd keep you safe. One way or the other."

"This isn't about me, Acolyte," she told him. "I can take care of myself. You know that." Taking the piece of paper between her hands, she tore it in two and sighed. "We can worry about this if and when the time comes. Right now you need to focus on you. You need to focus on getting better."

He sighed. "I will, I promise."

Lucia stared into his eyes for a long while before suddenly lunging forward and embracing her friend. She buried her face in his shoulder trying to hide her tears. "I'm here for you, okay?" she promised him. "I'll be here with you every step of the way. You'll make it through this."

Acolyte caught Lucia, and stroked her head as she spoke. "Yeah, I know, Lucia. I'm here for you too."

Later...

Acolyte, Lucia, and Nikolai were seated side by side, in a waiting room of the compound's hospital. The title was appropriate, they discovered. It was the largest building any of them had encountered inside the camp so far, and while it may have looked like an oversized timber cabin from the outside, the inside was clean, sterile, and well lit. There were enough beds to house about 20 patients at once, with four currently occupied. According to what they had been told, there were six full-time physicians in the commune, two of them surgeons, with about two dozen others working part-time as support staff. They might be out in the middle of nowhere, but Christa clearly spared no expense when it came to taking care of her people. It must have taken her years to procure the people and materials necessary to build a facility so advanced.

"Mr. Van Der Lind?" a man's voice piped up, as he emerged through a door on their left. "I'm Dr. Elewa, Chief of Medicine here at... well, I really should think of a name for this place one of these days."

Dr. Elewa was young for his title, looking not much older than mid-twenties. A Lebanese man, tall and wiry, with long black hair and an untidy beard. His white coat was looking worn and stained, and beneath it he wore a loosely-buttoned Hawaiian shirt and faded jeans. As he stood there, smiling lazily at them, the doctor took out a slightly crumpled packet of cigarettes, and drew out a new one with his teeth. Despite his scruffy appearance, however, there was a spark in his rich, hazel eyes.

"This way please." he said to Acolyte, motioning back towards his office, before turning his attention to Lucia, the most visibly agitated of the trio.

"You'll get him back in mint condition. I promise." he said, with a cheeky smile and a wink, before lighting up his cigarette and turning away.

The awkwardness Nikolai felt intensified now that he and Lucia were alone in the waiting room. It was hard for him to tell whether or not she was angry at him. He'd known about Acolyte's condition for weeks, after all, and hadn't said a word.

"The doctor seems... relaxed." he mumbled after a short period of silence "I'm think that means we have nothing to worry about."

====================================================================================================================================

"Judah!" Christa called, as she stepped through the threshold of the cabin. "I'm rounding up a few people to come foraging in the bush this afternoon, to see what we can find for the feast tonight. Would you like to come? Some of our guests will be joining us as well."

====================================================================================================================================

"There was a clerical error in Requestions, and we got sent a little surplus for this mission, so you're not putting us out." Major Norton told Selena and the others, as he lead them through the armoury. At the far end of one room stood three secure lockers, side by side, each their own, modular unit. Taking out a remote control, the Major entered a password sequence. Status lights on the pods glowed bright green in the dim bunker, followed by a series of metallic clicks as the locks released, and a hissing sound as the hinges swung open.

Inside were three suits of armour, of differing size and shape. The one on the left was massive and hulking, with heavy metallic plates interlocking over almost every inch of surface area. The one on the right was much leaner, skin-tight with angular overlays of armour plating in crucial areas. The middle suit struck a median between the others. It's design was aerodynamic, with an array of different visual stalks on the headset that was currently pulled down over the helmet. Something was also mounted on the suits shoulders, wrists, and ankles. It looked to be some kind of propulsion system, with extending, fibrous panels that were currently folded away.

"What you see here is the bleeding edge of VentureTech's Special Operations Force Multiplication Infantry Assistance Technology." The Major announced, pointing to the largest suit. "The HSIE Behemoth Mk3: That armour will stop just about anything lighter than a direct hit from an anti-tank rifle, with an active medical assistance system in case you do get bruised; and with the physics amplification underlay, you can flip a bus or punch through a solid steel door. Alternatively, there's the CIE Revenant Mk 2..." he swung his arm over to the far right. "With active camouflage, emissions shielding, and active disruptor technology. So long as you don't tread on a bad guy's toe, he's not gonna know you're there." Finally, Norton gestured to the middle suit. "Last but not least, the ASCE Vampire: In-built aerial assault system, ranged countermeasures, and state of the art marksmanship assistance HUD. There's also an active adrenaline management system, for when things get hot."

"Dibs on that one." Yu piped up.

"These are my new favourite toys." The Major continued, before turning to face Selena "Try not to break them on this mission of yours. I'm also authorising you a light-cargo VTOL, and it's flight crew, for a one-way trip, so I hope you know where your going."

"We do." Selena replied, almost speechless at Norton's generosity "Thank you, Major."

"You should get acquainted with your new equipment." The Major told them. "You're wheel's up at 0200."

"...and that was the last time I've really had it checked out," Acolyte concluded, having filled Dr. Elewa in on everything he knew about his condition. "It's been a while," he said. "What tests can you run, exactly?"

Dr. Elewa may not have looked particularly studious, and may have made light of things in front of Acolyte's concerned friends, but he took his job seriously. From the moment they were alone in his office, the doctor had listened patiently, and asked his questions to the point. When Acolyte finished speaking, he sat back in his chair and steepled his hands beneath his chin.

"Blood tests, X-rays, a spinal tap..." he listed in a serious voice. "I get the feeling, however, that I won't get the kind of fidelity I need without a biopsy. That's not the hard part, though it's a serious procedure... I wouldn't feel comfortable even beginning down that avenue without an MRI. Getting hold of one will be complicated, but I'll make some calls right away. This is the kind of place where you can find just about anything for sale, so long as you've got the money and won't turn you're nose up at any damp corner."

Acolyte grinned. "Don't worry, I'm sure I can bring myself to climb inside an MRI with bloodstains on the inside. As long as it works, anyway."

After some silence, his face hardened, and he said, "but obviously given... everything, you can understand I'd like to avoid any kind of treatment that would involve... doping me up."

Dr. Elewa's face looked grave, and he looked Acolyte firmly in the eye for a moment before responding.

"Mr. Van Der Lind..." he began "I need you to understand at this point, that the only way that's not gonna happen is if you refuse treatment; and if that happens, the only thing I can possibly do for you is tell you how long you have with a wide margin of error. A biopsy would be done under heavy local anaesthetic. Beyond that, if the tumour is operable, I'll have to put you under for brain surgery; and if it isn't, then unless the MRI machine comes free with targeted radio-therapy, there's gonna be an intense and prolonged course of chemotherapy in your future, which will be debilitating in the extreme without anything to medicate the pain."

Acolyte sighed. "I'm not going down that road again," he muttered.

"There is some good news..." Elewa told him "The fact that you're still at you current level of health after so long without treatment indicates a comparatively slow rate of progression. There's a good chance we've still caught it early enough to be treatable. However, there's absolutely no way you get out of this easily. You need to accept that, and the people around you need to know the kind of support your going to need from them to pull through."

"I need time to think about this," Acolyte replied. "How long would it take you to get an MRI machine?"

"That's a tough one to crack..." Elewa sighed, putting his hands behind his head. "Rest assured, I'm going to get Christa to put everything we have into this, and you'll be the first to know as soon as we find one."

"Right," Acolyte said, straightening up. Any good cheer he'd walked in with had evaporated. "Well if that's everything..."

"Just one more thing." Elewa said "This treatment is going to be hard, and the cancer may well not be the hard part. However..." he smiled for the first time, a lively, determined look in his eyes. "I'm very good at what I do, and so is everyone else I work with. We are gonna give this everything we've got, you're friends are not gonna hesitate to give you everything you need, none of you would have made it this far otherwise. All any of us need from you, is to believe that you can beat this thing. It may sound corny, but never underestimate the power a positive patient has to cure themselves. I've seen it more time than I can count. You're gonna kick this thing right in the teeth, and you're gonna walk away smiling. Got it?"

Acolyte grunted non-committedly, and headed for the door.

Aggie's face lit up when she saw the contents of the armory. She quickly went over the suits and began looking them over like a child would look over a new gift at Christmas. To Lewis, this looked something out of an old science-fiction book he read when he was younger that had something to do with troopers on starships. Once the Major was done informing them about the suits, Lewis knew that they had choose in order to succeed in their mission. If anything, this would definitely get them through the mission or at least help Selena through.

"Thank you very much, Major." Lewis said happily to the man. "You've just made this mission a bit easier for us."

"I'll take the big one." Aggie said with the most hopeful voice that Lewis has heard in a while. Lewis smiled at Aggie's optimism hoping that some of that would rub off on him. With no other choices available he looked to the "Revenant" suit, which he certainly didn't mind.

"Aggie, are you sure you want the big one?" Lewis asked. "You won't exactly be hard to spot in that kind of thing."

"I'm done hiding in the shadows, Lewis." Aggie's voice hardened while she eyed the suit intensely "All those years of hiding in the shadows... all those moments of wishing you had the gun...all those minutes where I wasting away in the darkness. I've been hiding long enough and believe me, I don't mind the attention."

"Good to hear." Lewis said, patting Aggie on the back as he looked to his own suit. "So... I'm guessing these aren't exactly as easy as fitting on some pants are they?" Lewis jokingly asked the Major.

Making her way across the commune, Judah walked lazily mulling over the days events. She had other shit to do, like check on her drunken idiot friends, but she couldn't get her conversations with their new 'guests' out of her head. She liked 'em an' all, but there was something very off about them. Especially Nikolai. His body language, hell his regular language was... irregular, charmingly childish for a man his size. It was as if he was just learning to interact with people or some shit. Where the fuck where they from... and why hide it? And why was she so goddamned curious?

She shook her head, she had more important things to take care of. Sure, this was the only interesting thing to happen around here in forever -but fuck, they probably weren't hiding anything interesting anyway. It would be boring like everything always was and end up being a waste of time.

Judah heard her name as she passed near a small cabin. It was Christa.

"I'm rounding up a few people to come foraging in the bush this afternoon, to see what we can find for the feast tonight. Would you like to come? Some of our guests will be joining us as well."

'Fuck no'

So much for having other shit to do, but she couldn't actually say no to a person as well regarded as Christa. A bright white smile crossed her face and her voice went up and octave, "'Course I would. Anything to lend a hand." She said her fake smile becoming a little more genuine. Maybe if she helped out a bit more Christa would tell her what she knew about the freemen. She just had to have some idea of what they were hiding, she wouldn't have let them stay otherwise. This was good, she would be able to satisfy her curiosity about their guests while still accomplishing something.

"Need any help before then? My day's wide open." She added as she approached the house.

Her friends would have to wait.

Shuffling along through the cool night air, Riley was a jumpy mess, flinching at the memories of screaming inside his head. So far, he'd managed to avoid any of the other soldiers. He didn't want any of them to see him like this. They wouldn't understand, and then he'd... he'd...

'Leave them to die too?'

'Fuck off!'

'You mean like you did when your wife was burning?'

"Fuck off!" he snarled, swiping at air.

"Guten morgen, herr Creed."

The soft voice of Dietrich emerged from the doorway of one of the compounds out-buildings. Calmly, he dropped and snuffed out his cigarette, and walked out into the moonlight where Riley could see him.

"What appears to be the matter?" he asked, the façade of concern on his face.

At the window of her own quarters, The Talon observed the two figures in the courtyard with a smile. Elsewhere, she faintly heard the sounds of slithering steel, and quickly-stifled screams.

"Old memories," Riley muttered, turning his back on the other man. "Old wounds." Then the old facade was back, the easy grin. "Just needed some air, mate."

"You have chosen an interesting time to wander alone." the German told him, moving closer. "Do you hear it?" Dietrich, asked, closing his eyes. At the sound of the first distinct gunshot, he smiled.

"We have begun purging this place. Within hours, we will be en route to the final battle of our war."

"Yeah, so I heard," Riley replied. "Try not to shoot your load before the big climax."

"Oh, we shall make a point of proving our value to our lady as of yet." Dietrich reassured him "We wouldn't want to end up like the delegates that were sent to treat with us here, would we?"

As he spoke, more bursts of gunfire and inaudible yells could be heard.

"Our lady is so efficient in this manner." he simpered "No resource goes to waste; and, once it has been used up, is neatly excised before it can be allowed to become bloated and feeble. It is a kindness."

Riley scowled. "Are you really trying to use the whole hunter gatherer 'waste nothing' logic to appeal to me? I mean I go in for that shit when I hunt, but it's no moral centre, mate."

Dietrich's laugh was tinny and unpleasant

"And what is yours?" he asked "If our lady's vision is not guidance enough for you, what drives a man like Herr Creed?"

Riley shrugged. "Don't know," he replied. "Never really cared. But what's it to you, anyway?"

"I was just wondering, with all that lies ahead of us, what our moments of truth will each be." the German replied "How might we each step forward in the waning hours to show our loyalty to our lady, if that is indeed where it lies..."

He had been walking out in front as he said this. Now he turned back and smiled at Riley.

"Have you seen Nahla? I had been hoping to catch up with her tonight."

Riley frowned at this. "I reckon she's sleeping," he replied curtly. "I came out here on my own." After a pause, he added, "to be alone."

"Nah, nothing like that," Riley replied, turning to face the other man. Behind his back, his hands flexed, their tendons standing out with the tension. "Look, do you want something?"

"I just want to know where you see your path ending." Dietrich said "Can a man who believes in nothing expect salvation, in this life or the nest. If it were between you and our lady, who's hand would you wish dear Nahla to take? Will you change your tune and confess love to her, so that you may keep on living with her as your consolation prize? Is that the service our lady can expect from you?"

Riley moved like a blur, crossing the distance between them in an instant. The night silence was broken by a dull crunch as his fist slammed into the other man's face. With Dietrich sprawled in the dirt, Riley came down on top of him, sitting on his chest and pinning him by the wrists. "'Our Lady' gets what she gets from me until I say otherwise," he breathed. "And I'm fucking sick of this 'us or them' spiritual loyalism bullshit you're talking."

Inside, his thoughts were a blur. Was this something that Talon has orchestrated? It was certainly her style. But Dietrich had always acted like a creepy little shit around Nahla, like he had some sick little mental image going on. Whatever was going on, Riley was tired of it. No more being jerked around.

Dietrich did not struggle, but looked defiantly into Riley's eyes and smiled, even as blood from his nose trickled down over his lips.

"See, that wasn't so hard." he told him "Now, whatever are we to make of an answer like that?"

He wasn't afraid of Riley. His lady would be watching, and would protect him.

"That's not my answer," Riley replied evenly. He understood now, or at least thought he might. This was some fucked up test. He had no idea how he was supposed to respond.

'When in doubt, go for shock value, I guess...'

Now a low growl could be heard from the shadows. Just past Riley's back, Dietrich might have been able to make out a pair of yellow eyes watching as Riley got up off of the other man.

"He is."

Odin began to advance.

If Odin's entrance inspired fear in Dietrich, he didn't show any of it on his face.

"So..." he said quietly "That's how it is."

"No, it's not," Riley replied, drawing his boot knife as he straightened up. "I don't share 'Our Lady's' pain fetish. I just wanted to see you realize she can't stop me killing you. Or maybe it's won't. You figure it out." With that, he flicked the knife at Dietrich, where it stuck in his chest, right through the heart.

Dietrich was dead before the shock of what had happened had entirely registered, and his corpse wore the ghost of his last smile, as it lay spread-eagled in the dirt. It was hard for Riley to tell if seconds or minutes passed before anyone else arrived on the scene. Before long however, he was surrounded by shock, indignation and raised rifles, Odin growling as he moved to his side.

"Don't move!"

"Relinquish your weapons!"

"Traitor!"

"That's enough. Put down your weapons."

The Talon strode through the crowd with ease, to stand opposite Riley. The look on her face was passive, almost curious, but those eyes were enough to wither any sense of victory, as they burrowed into him from the other side of Dietrich's vanquished body. Even Odin seemed to shrink a little. For a while, she said nothing, and the crowd around them waited eagerly for the axe to fall.

"Riley only did his duty here tonight. Dietrich was a traitor."

Uncertain murmurs swarmed around the pair, but the Talon put up her hand and silenced them all.

"He may have served faithfully for many years, but with the time for bargaining and infiltration now at an end, so was his usefulness. Like the mercenary he was at heart, it was only a matter of time before he turned on us. I have been watching for the signs for some time, and now Riley's actions have helped preserve us all."

The expression on Riley's face wasn't quite perceptible unless you knew what to look for. Although outwardly he looked placid, the look he gave Talon had undertones of apprehensive distrust. A gift from a woman like her at a time like this was almost certainly double sided.

He waved to Odin, and the wolf turned and disappeared into the night. Crouching down next to Dietrich's corpse, Riley calmly extracted the knife and wiped it on the dead man's fatigues before sheathing it. Straightening up, he faced the Talon again.

"Do you want to debrief me, or am I free to go back to bed, ma'am?"

The Talon smiled, before turning to one of her lieutenants.

"I don't hear any more gunfire."

"We are victorious, ma'am." came the reply "All, LTIP, Protectorate and Helios forces have been neutralised."

"Any casualties?"

"Only seven of ours wounded. Three dead."

"Make that four." The Talon said, looking down at Dietrich. "Good, a few casualties of our own helps put us beyond suspicion. Order your men to dispose of the bodies and get ready to leave. We have no more reason to stay here."

When she and Riley were left alone, The Talon took one last look at Dietrich's smiling face, before turning her back on him.

"You're free to go Riley. However..." She looked back over her shoulder with a withering smile "Please instruct Nahla to see me in my quarters, as soon as possible."

Riley's mouth was a grim line. "Right. Yeah, sure." He snapped an untidy salute before turning on his heel and striding away.

'Fuck.'

"In that case the bar will have to be closed for the duration, since either me or Abigail have to be here manning it at all times. And if you're wondering where Miss Nyte is, she left a few minutes ago back to her room for some reason."

Barrows didn't say anything at first. He just tilted his head a little and slowly stepped forward until he ended up against the bar, with only that small space standing between him and the little pube grower on the other side.

"Well..." He said softly. "Time to sound last call." He leaned in, resting his hands on the bar as he slowly leered in closer to Zachary. "HOP TO IT!" He belted out right in the bartender's face, suddenly springing to life as his men started herding any and every bystander out like sheep. "Go on lad, chop, chop!" He clapped his hands, patting Zach on like a motherly drill sergeant. As they were all filed out he helped himself to sip of one of the finer spirits on display as he quickly searched for the back room. He found it easy enough.

Barrows thumped at the door with a closed fist. "Miss Nyte I am respecting your privacy by knocking here, and asserting my authority as an occupier by coming in anyway!" He drawled, thinking he was being just oh so funny. Cus he was. He was fuckin' hilarious. "Come on, Love. Teacher's called assembly."

"Well..." Barrows said softly. "Time to sound last call." It was then that he leaned in towards Zach, bearing his teeth in a lurid manner which made Zach lean ever so slightly back. "HOP TO IT!" He shouted, his overly bombastic nature coming back into the fold. "Go on lad, chop, chop!" Whilst this was going on, Barrow's goons were busy shoving out any and all remaining bystanders out of the room. It didn't take Zach long to finish things up. He soon fell in line with the other civilians as they were trudged to wherever it was they were going.

Abigail

Abigail was busying herself staring at the ceiling blankly as a loud banging could be heard from the other side of the door. "Miss Nyte I am respecting your privacy by knocking here, and asserting my authority as an occupier by coming in anyway!" The door soon opened, revealing the giant of a man from where Abigail was laying down.

"Didn't your mother ever tell you it was rude to barge in on a lady?" Abigail retorted in a somewhat dry manner as she got up from the bed.

"Well then, you may as well take me to your leader."

"Didn't your mother ever tell you it was rude to barge in on a lady?"

"My mother was a crack whore who'd smack me around regularly but thank you for rubbing salt on those old wounds." Barrows snarked back, adopting what he believed to be the tone of an effeminate Jewish man. Just cus.

Still their subarctic bar wench was playing ball so he didn't need to rough her up in the face or anything. Maybe Hammond could take a shine to her too. Maybe Barrows could set them up, oh wouldn't that be lovely? He'd probably have to wait and see how things went after (what he could only assume were going to be) a long string of horrible torture and summary executions. This wasn't going to be a fun day for somebody in this dump. Ah who was he kidding, it wasn't going to fun for anybody, barrows included.

"Well then, you may as well take me to your leader."

"Aye, aye." He bumped her on her way as the two of them brought up the rear of all those sad souls being herded around like cattle. "Come along, Pumpkin."
