The power is out...

i live in south Florida aka hurricane central, after hurricane Francis hit us back in 2004 we ended up going without power for almost 2 weeks. the good news is we were fairly prepared for it candles lamps canned food, stores that didn't get power back switched to generators and the national guard set up at the camp grounds and handed out MRE'S every day so we didn't starve. my family loves board games and reading so we kept decently entertained. but man were tensions high towards the end of it my sister ended up taking a couple of swings at me. imagine living in a house with no hot water no tv/computer in 95 degree weather with 100% humidity its enough to make a sane man crazy let alone a teenage girl so i don't really blame her. ahh memories to last a life time.

Candlelit scrabble if I had company! If I'm on my own I'd read. I don't have a Kindle so all my books are the old fashioned variety. Either that or go out for a run :O)

For half my life I dealt with random power outages since I lived in the sticks with heavy industry further down the road; a solitary chemical plant about 5 miles down. If they tripped their power station it would knock out all of us hickbillies...which they did. A lot.

I have dice, cards, books a kerosene lamp and a couple of windup LED lanterns/flashlights.
Last time the power went out at my friends' we played Shadowrun for a good 4 hours unimpeded; sometimes it's just better to leave the electronics alone for a night.

Power's' out? Ok. This is what I did last time when I was out of town.

Use my phone for internet browsing, YouTube, Netflix, podcasts, and music until battery dies.

Use laptop for similar activities and flash games.

Play 3DS XL.

Play PS Vita.

Use Nook HD for app-fun and magazine reading

Use flashlight for reading and sleep.

Go to friend's house with power. Charge all used electronics. Repeat.

If it happened in my neighborhood then I could just go out over a friend's place or downtown.

Usually read, because hey, good excuse to read. Even if I lacked any light, I have a kindle with a reading light.

Otherwise, I can play a game on my phone or tablet. If I'm with friends, we turn on a flashlight or open a window, and keep playing board games or poker. Or, I figure that its a good time to go for a run.

Basically, a power outage means its a bit darker, have a smaller screen, and I eat food that's cold. Ive done this for weeks before.

Ptfff, puhleeze, a few days ago, the power was out for about 18 hours (!), due to a storm akin to a hurricane.

Good thing I had my Android tablet lying around, but... it was half-charged :S

I wait a few minutes to see if it comes on.

I then get candles and torches setup in main rooms.

Then I make a drink and talk to family.

The very few power outs we have here are an hour or less. Normally at night as that's when we get bad weather.

Watch a movie on my laptop! Then play my handhelds! If it's not too dark when the power goes out, read until it is then do the other two. If the power is still out and it's dark... lay in the dark and lament about how much I need a flashlight as well.

More or less this plus lamenting no fan/air-conditioning, except that was before I moved to the US for school last year. FPL has been out for literally a second or two maybe twice (that I know of) before being back on in my area and it's a big contrast to the power being cut off at the second crack of thunder back in the islands.
