Why is lack of patriotism a problem? Your argument sounds very much the same like the (atleast the swedish) racist parties use, trying to victimize themselves.

It's not the lack of patriotism, it's that those who are patriotic are shot down as racists.

Seeing as I live in Canada, I don't have a clue what the BNP is, but you do make some valid points.
I think it stands for British Nationalist Party. Just a guess though.

I do know they are racist pricks.

Are they? Give some examples please. This is certainly not the case in Scotland.

I don't know, I can't give any specific examples. It's just the mood in England that you can't say anything like it. Just around where I live and my school, for one place. And it hasn't even been a major problem, it's just that with the BNP's two seats it's recently come majorly into the spotlight.

THe thing is, 7/10 times, it IS racists and bigots who do this stuff.

Anyway, England isn't so much a country as the USA. we're more like Britain, and the Scots don't take to kindly to "God save the queen" (read the lyrics).

I do hate the national anthem, though. It's so PANSY. Pomp and Circumstance:Land of Hope and Glory any day of the week.

I have a mate who I've known since I was 4 (kinda the only reason I haven't killed him yet). He's grown into the football hooligan type who reinforces this kind of England=Bigots stuff. He jokes about supporting BNP, which is his way of saying he supports it without drawing hate

I don't quite think it's the fact that people view being patriotic as racist; they just don't feel any need to be patriotic. I mean, most people I know here in England find patriotism to be stupid; that's why a lot of people mock America. I personally feel patriotism is complete crap, but that might be due to the fact that I've moved a lot in my life.

Being patriotic is just a way of saying "I am proud to live here", but I'm not. England isn't a bad country, but why is any country better than another? Is it money, how clean it is, the crime-rates, how well it's know, the language, the culture, the military power? As far as I see it, most people who are patriotic have never left the country they are born in, which is why patriotism is considered 'racist' by some people. The only people I know who are patriotic are people who believe that black people can't be English, and that Polish people are genetically inferior to England.

While growing up, I felt Germany was better to live in. Lower crime, better water, cleaner, and it has got better weather. Those are the only things that personally affect my life, so why would I care about the fact that we were once and Empire that took over a ridiculous chunk of the world? Why would I care that we were once number #1? Why would I even care, now, that are are wealthy and well-off for our size?

Most countries in Western society feel exactly the same, minus the weather, wildlife, and accents/language. Why would I feel patriotic when I know every other country in the world is a land of grey roads, blue skies, and lots of people? There's not enough difference between the countries any more to feel like a true national identity.

Again, all of that is my opinion.

Great points AngloDoom. People seem to forget that countries don't really mean much. After all the British monarchs are German, the vast majority of Americans are descended from immigrants and all countries only exist because of wars, treaties and marriages from hundreds or even thousands of years ago!

BNP is a huge problem but I do love England and the Royal Family and it's not just out of blind loyalty.
Pardon the tangent but why do you like the royal family? I haven't anything against them but i've never seen them as useful.

Back on topic: I'm Scottish and proud of it but I don't feel any particular patriotism because i've lived overseas for a long time.

One thing makes me laugh about Britain and Patriotism.

The English are english and proud.
The Scottish are scottish and proud.
The Welsh are welsh and proud.
The Northern Irish are....complicated.

The British only seem to exist in the eyes of foreigners. Heh.
That's a bit of a generalisation. I'm from Scotland, and I've always preferred to think of myself as British first, and then Scottish.

That's why we're British that's how we include everybody. If we say English then the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish get pissed.

As Brits we're patriotic, not as the English.

It's hard to explain, but British seems more inclusive of others while remaining patriotic to me.
