There's a lot of hate for Twilight on the internet, and it's well-founded considering that the books are an abomination to literature. However, reading through all the flaming comments on Youtube trailers or Anti-Twilight threads, it becomes very apparent that people are hating on Twilight for all the wrong reasons. I know a million Twilight threads have been made before, so I'm just going to keep it short and make a quick list of reason to hate and not to hate Twilight.

Reasons Not to Hate Twilight
-It's badly written
-It's popular
-Edward is "gay"
-It's for girls/there are no hot chicks in the movies
-Stephenie Meyer takes liberties with vampire lore

Reason to Hate Twilight
-10% of the income from the franchise goes to the Mormon church which can then go towards anti-gay political campaigns
-Twilight promotes manipulative and/or abusive relationships
-Stephenie Meyer created fake legends about a real Native American community, the Quileute, who are now harassed by Twilight fans
-The plot suggests that women should forgo post-secondary education in order to get married and pregnant if they want to prove their love for their boyfriends/husbands

I can admire people being against the Twilight franchise, but make sure you take the time to assess why you don't like it. There are more devious workings afoot than gay vampires.

Note: Although as an atheist I obviously don't agree with Mormon teachings, that doesn't mean I discriminate against the Mormon church. I'm fine with Meyer donating the money to her religious leaders, it's only the potentially harmful use of the money that I disagree with. I also want to be clear that the 10% goes to the Church and not straight to any anti-gay campaign. Meyer has never directly donated to an explicitly anti-gay organization.

Edit: Part of the reason I included "badly written" in the reasons not to hate Twilight is because tons of popular franchises are horribly written, yet still enjoyable. Badly written books, movies, or games can still be a guilty pleasure. Although good writing is always a plus, a little bad writing (or in this case, a lot of bad writing) isn't a reason to immediately dislike something, in my opinion.

Yep. Twilight isn't too respectful in its portrayal of how women should act...

But I think that the fact that it is a badly written book series is reason enough to hate it, not even considering all the other bad things.

I really don't see what difference it makes. If hating Twilight = no money to the movies or books, then what does it matter whether you meant to not give money to the Mormon Church rather than just hating the concept? All reasons for not liking something are legitimate, if they matter to you, and I don't quite see what makes you think you get to tell us what our reasons should be for not liking something.

Nah, I'll still dislike Twilight for being poorly written and it's characters annoying me, on top of the reasons you list I should hate it for.

I hate it for all of the above. They are terribly written books with an even worse message. Period.

I still like my reasons for hating it being it's terribly written and all of the characters are one dimensional.

It's fiction. Get over it. If you don't like where the money from the franchise goes, then don't purchase anything from the franchise. If you think it promotes bad values, don't read it or propagate it. If you don't like how certain ethnicities or cultures are portrayed, go back to the beginning of this post where I said IT'S FICTION and take that in for a bit longer.

There are worse things in this world to be worried about. You want crazy, backwards values? Look up the Westboro Baptist Church, the Fundamental Church of Latter Day Saints, or even PETA.

Does that mean that all of the 10% actually goes to anti-gay organisations? Because really, She can donate to wherever she really wants too, if I donate to a world wide charity or religion, and they blow my money on Blackjack and Hookers, does it become my fault?
I don't know anything about her, or the Morman religion, but I just assume that donating to a religious group isn't a reason to hate someone or their books, despite what they could or couldn;t do with that money.

I still wonder how many Twilight haters have actually even read the books.

I am not arguing against the fact that it's poorly written and has terribly designed characters, but this seems to be the latest (and very long lasting) band wagon.

I thought everyone had moved onto Justin Bieber.

I think the phase is starting the end, the best thing we could collectively do to fight it is agree never to mention it again.

I'm fairly sure being badly written is a valid reason for disliking a book. The rest of the reasons people shouldn't hate it I agree with though, as well as the reasons for hating it.

Her writing style bothers the hell out of me, and yeah this will make me a grammer nazi, but my god, has she ever heard of a semi colon?!

Anyways, I don't like how Belle is perfectly fine having a stalker boyfriend or whatever he is to her, and how she obsesses over him. And all the characters are extremely shallow to where I can't seem to give a shit what happens to them. I tried reading the series but the furthest I got was the middle of the second book.

Badly written books, movies, or games can still be a guilty pleasure, or a regular pleasure - although good writing is always a plus, a little bad writing isn't a reason to immediately dislike something.

And that's coming from an English nerd.

it is however poorly written and i have always said that to hate something you must get to know it

with that said i have not read the whole twilight book (didnt make it through the first book) and its not like i havnt read books like this as i do read more of the action/romance books then i used to but it was just so stale and boring that it couldnt keep my attention

as for the edward being gay thing.... uhhh cant say i dont disagree but thats not something to hate about however.... he is like what 300 years old and she is like 16 wtf do they really have in common

as for alot of stuff in the book it just didnt make sense like the black credit card with unlimited money, he is still in high school for some reason, other bad vampires just happen to show up whenever bella comes to town, edward is instantly attracted to bella

does anyone else think that this is just a glorified romance novel that could be shortened so much.... i mean as a guy i have no idea why girls like this garbage... then again it kind of fits in with all the fairy tales where all women have to do is sit around and wait for their prince to come and save them

I know one of the common anti-complaints of this series is that "its not how vampires SHOULD be." And while there is a degree of truth in that, I agree with it.

Why? Because in my opinion what vampires SHOULD be is ENTERTAINING!!!!

Oh yeah. I'm not sure Twilight would qualify as one of those guilty pleasure, but even if it did those other reasons would definitely affect my enjoyment. The problem isn't just with the writing, but with the entire story itself.

Why shouldn't I hate it for being badly written? Or taking liberties with lore? The vampires were iconic. She ruined that. She speaks English like a 5 year old and uses metaphors in the same way. You can be literally smothered by her adjectives.

Yes, there are other reasons to hate that book, but (and I'll be very selfish here) I'm not affected by the other reasons. Where I live, the effects of the Mormon church aren't all that felt (I've never seen a political campaign anti-gay so I'm only adding this here due to my lack of knowledge not due to lack of sympathy), I've never been in an abusive relationship and believe that those women who are in one are not going to stick around because of damn Twilight. They do so because of personal ideas and feelings.

And for the post-secondary education...that doesn't truly affect me either. Honestly, those who get married and pregnant over a book probably wouldn't have gone to college either.

The ones I feel for are the Native Americans...
