Part of the reason I included "badly written" in the reasons not to hate Twilight is because tons of popular franchises are horribly written, yet still enjoyable. Badly written books, movies, or games can still be a guilty pleasure, or a regular pleasure - although good writing is always a plus, a little bad writing isn't a reason to immediately dislike something.

And that's coming from an English nerd.
Coming from a fellow English nerd, I fully agree that it shouldn't be the deciding factor in any book or story whether it's good, bad, worthy of hate, I've read some stories on fanfiction.net and there are some poorly written stories, but I like the story well enough to read it.

It just so happens with Twilight that that's a very small reason why I personally don't like the series, not hate, but dislike, and it's not the sole reason I dislike that series. I'd like to think of it as a minor nitpick.

I dislike it for butchering vampires, who have been my favorite monsters since I saw Nosferatu at a young age and was terrified beyond belief by it. Then came reading 'Dracula', watching various Dracula films, then watching other vampire films.

Then after ALL that history of vampires instilled in me, along comes Twilight to reduce the cold, blood-thirsty, sinister seduction machines that I'd grown up with to sparkling, foppish teen heart-throbs. Hell, even the EVIL vampires in Twilight aren't that interesting or cool.

I have to agree on the reasons not to hate it. Then again "so-and-so is gay" is never a valid reason for hating something.

Bella was such a pathetically parasitic character I couldn't like the stories. I don't understand how I managed to read New Moon, maybe I thought her character would perform some kind of spectacular metamorphosis to someone indepedent and stronger from her experience. Then it turns out the only way she can regain an ounce of individuality is to run back to the guy who effectively dumped her?

This is likely why I had a True Blood phase. Sookie smacks a goon with a chain in the first chapter. Definately not one of these "poor me" female protagonists.

Edit: Just remembered another reason for disliking it. The True Blood novels were around before Twilight. In them the female human character has the powers of mind-reading, but she can't read any vampires' minds - and part of the reason she falls in love with a vampire is the silence. Am I the only one that sees a similarity here?

Twilight became fantastically successful because even though its story is horrible, it tapped into a demographic that largely had been unexploited until now (Young teenage women and young adult women). Inevitably better movies will come around, but they will be overshadowed by the success of Twilight ("Will it make more money than Twilight?") because Meyer did it first.
In other terms, imagine if according to time and history, you replaced Star Wars and Battlefield Earth by way of release date. Battlefield Earth was utter crap, but if they did it first, it would set the precedent for years to come in a new demographic/genre.

I have every reason to hate a piece of literature that is badly written, solely on the basis that it is badly written.

I see what you did there.

There is being badly written and then there is being scandalously badly written. She descrides virtually every secondary characters appearance at the end of the first chapter, and doesn't waste another adjective on them. There are terribly written passages, multiple grammatical errors, repetitive sentences and I think a spelling mistake, although I can't remember if there was one. Did she even have an editor or get someone to read over what she had written before it was sent to print? It is badly written, there is no counter argument, and I think that is a good enough reason to hate it.

Reasons to Hate Twilight
-It's badly written
-It's popular
-Edward is "gay"
-It's for girls/there are no hot chicks in the movies
-Stephenie Meyer takes liberties with vampire lore

Reasons to boycott Twilight
-10% of the income from the franchise goes to the Mormon church which can then go towards anti-gay political campaigns
-Twilight promotes manipulative and/or abusive relationships
-Stephenie Meyer created fake legends about a real Native American community, the Quileute, who are now harassed by Twilight fans
-The plot suggests that women should forgo post-secondary education in order to get married and pregnant if they want to prove their love for their boyfriends/husbands
not 'fixing' it for you, but its literally how i read it
though 'its popular' it a flimsy reason to dislike something i hate Halo, but it was boring and won't play CoD for being 'to realistic'

how ever those games are actually good, where as twilight is just trash, i hated it BEFORE i found out about the more damaging bits of it, those just ensured not only will i not shell out for it, but I'll try and stop others from buying it

I don't care about any of your reasons why I should hate it. It's badly written drek, and that alone is more than enough reason to hate it.

My aunt actually got me a shitload of the books for my birthday last year, because apparently it's illegal for young women to not own them. I'd already read the first one and it made me physically ill, and since my aunt is the kind of person that doesn't hold onto receipts so I couldn't return them, I've been using pages as kindling when we have cookouts and barbeques.

Hmm.

I guess that means that Edward is finally...

Oh and don't forget how Edward watches over Bella sleeping when she's his natural prey. Think about it, a "vegetarian" vampire watching over a girl who he wants to eat, sleep. That's the same as allowing a castrated peadophile, hell a "reformed" peadophile, watch over your teenage daughter. And he's the fucking good guy.

I think that's a fair distinction.

I agree with everything stated here except for this. Something being poorly written is a damn good reason for me to hate it. If it can't be coherent, have a decent flow, tell an interesting tale or provide any intellectual stimulation then it's not worth reading. Which is not to say that anything that isn't a masterpiece of literary genius isn't worth my time, as I am prone to the occasional guilty read, but I think being poorly written is just as good a reason as the others to shun a book or series.

Of course, badly written stuff isn't the same as being pedantic, which is a whole other can of words.

I hate it because the characters are tossers (Edward especially) none of them can simply say something without pointing out every little detail and "Glistening in the sun." Serously?

It's a Monster movie (I guesse, it has vampires and wolfs and all 'dat shit) yet there's only 1 fight and since the portagonist/narrator is such a fucking dolt she is aparently inconspicualy knocked-out during the action scene, so we basically dont see/read nothing.

I got it for free (The owner litterally said "Take it! I Hate (Underline that a few times) HATE This!" So I have nothing to complain about. Also I guesse I like reading, but I can't read something that is so intensly poorly writen, Infact none of us can read something like that!

At least I got a laugh out of Edward's terrible dialouge.

I don't understand this "Twilight is creating a generation of women who submit to abuse" sentiment. No, no it's not, in the same way that Bulletstorm isn't going to cause mass murders.

Against Mormonism: For crying out loud, we got asked to get into it near the butt end of Prop 8. There are other sects that were part of it. If she was Catholic or Baptists, would you say don't buy the books because 10% goes to those groups?

Moreover most of the income the church gets goes towards humanitarian works such as giving millions of dollars worth of medical treatment, training, equipment, and medicine to Africa, and disaster relief. i will respect your reasons for not liking the Church's beliefs though.

Women Rights: Ok, considering the classes Bella takes makes her fairly intelligent, SHE MAKES HORRIBLE DECISIONS AND IS ONLY INTO EDWARD BECAUSE SHE THINK'S HE'S HOT!

Oh and Edwards is a 100 year old pedophile. Not something I encourage anyone.

Ooh! Thankyou for a new anti-Twilight topic! Mine got banned because I was too honest =(
And well done on your research!
I will not burst with OP tonight, like I have done in the past countless times, but instead I will nod sagely and mumble the words - Twilight is an abominaion of the fictional lore and dignity.
Yes... that wasn't too bad was it..

...haaaaate..

....hate..

Oh my god, that is EVIL. I still hate it for being badly written, having no actual character development or characters for that matter and just overall being seven different kinds of bad. But that is just evil.

i'm sorry, "it's badly written" isn't a good reason to hate it? i read all four twilight books and was reminded during that ordeal that the last book i read about vampires was "salem's lot" and how well written and engaging it was and the romance oriented book i read before it was "looking for alaska" where the characters had great chemistry and were genuinly likeable, qualities twilight completely lacked due to terrible writing.

It's just this tweenage generation's emotional wallpaper. It will be pasted over next year by other hunky guys and drippy girl heroines.
