So I was tired of reading all these reviews paid off to show new release games how great they are, and other top 10 lists. So I decided to make my own based off all the games i've played since 1990. I hope you all approve of my list, at least give me feedback what you think I missed but I think in Conclusion it shows there is not a great deal of music from modern games that have got my attention. Perfect example was dragon age 1. It had everything right about it however it was so like lord of the rings I couldn't rate it for being anything other than another generic not so original soundtrack.

Also please note that these games are based on music fitting as best it can with the game, not about game play or any other factors.

Anyway here is my list, feedback more than welcome!

10. The Curse of Monkey Island
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKWT5wW4gdY at tenth we have the classic point and click game that brought joy, comedy and adventure rolled into one great game. the Caribbean music draws in the player to the world of piracy and treasure.

9. Diablo 1- cathedral. One of the most jaw gripping moments when you walk into the cathedral for the first time and hear this gothic music looking at the devastation of the minions of dark have done to defile the cathedral such as blood splatter, impaled corpses. Placing diablo 1 at a solid 9

8. Arcanum of Steamworks & magic Obscuria. When you listen to this and play the game you get a sense of sadness for the decline of what was once a great magical empire but at the same time the irony is that the music is done with industrial instruments to show the climb of the industrial revolution and not with traditional drums, chimes or flutes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftvpi-6Z6qw

7. Angels of Death, dawn of war 2. A rare modern game entry but this music is all about what the space marines are about, power, fanatical and unwavering fealty to the god emperor. Sadly they forgot about all the other races music to be just as great and so it is sadly placed 7th for this reason.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhoCf7Kq8Bc&feature=related

6.The Neverhood, one of the most craziest and amazing games you will ever play. Entirely clay animation in this game the music sends you off the rails while solving puzzles to an everlasting charade of jokes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwwcTNFfKn8&feature=related

5.Zork Nemesis- One of the few rare ones that most people may of forgotten the music, the sense of mystical and problem solving of the four elements. Another point and click game that brought a sense of beauty alongside tragedy in this tale.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWLr8Qb3jzU&feature=relmfu

4. Elder Scrolls III Morrowind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJD-Ufi1jGk
This was a close tie between oblivion but I felt this captured more of what the elder scrolls is all about. Vast landscapes with an abundance of diplomatic and political strugges in the midst of hero's fulfilling prophecies.

3. Baldurs gate, main theme. Ever felt like you were wanting to be the hero of some tale of biblical proportions. Baldurs gate deficiently touched down when it showered you in a hail of trumpets, drums and glory.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP7vWiaxw7Y

2. Empire earth 1, shadows track 6
at a close second comes empire earth 1, shadows is by far my personal favourite with heavy drums and an emphasis of an upcoming darkness and the grim tidings of war. Perfectly suited to one of the all time classic great rts games ever made.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY0ycuYGwuU

1. Myth II - soundtrack, well no obvious surprises of my choice but myth was a close tie with empire earth and for the simple choice of having strange monster sounds and alien voices with the finale of light at the end of the tunnel is why I chose it. To pull something like this off whilst keeping the theme of everlasting darkness requires a lot of skill.

I like the list although I don't agree with all your choices, even within one games soundtrack. Still it's nice to see a more PC centric list, the majority of the time these sorts of things tend to be 90% NES and SNES tunes... not that I particularly mind those, but whatever.

Instead of the Cathedral theme for Diablo I'd definitely have put the Tristram theme. Tristrams music is iconic, one of the most memorable pieces of music in PC gaming.

I'd also disagree about the Space Marines theme being the only memorable one in Dawn of War 2. The Eldar music is amazing! I mean seriously I play Eldar in that game and the music is just so damned incredibly EPIC I'm actually forced to use the word epic to describe it, in all caps and in bold font even.

I can only thing of one song in all of gaming that gets my blood pumping more than that last one in terms of sheer epicality epicness.

One song.

The most epic song I can think of in the entire gaming industry. Of the hundreds of games I've no doubt played.

I present to you:

..which despite all the buildup probably wouldn't make my own top 10 list if I were to think one up, but I've gotta admit it's probably the most pulse pounding battle theme I've found in a game.

see I used mods for total war games like Rome Total Realism or Deus Lo Vult with that music it was far better than the original. Sadly that is why I didnt put total war on there, because the mods music improved it for me.

As for Dawn of War, well I am a huge ork fan and they could of done a hundred times better with what they dished out. I am also very anti Eldar so :p probally why I forgot that one even though i still think the space marine is much better

hmm, ill probably put disgaea series (really all NIS games), persona series, the final fantasies have great songs dispersed throughout the series, chrono trigger, kingdom hearts 1 and 2.

in fact all of my personal great songs are from rpgs. cant think of any great music from fps or rts (red alert series maybe)

While I'm glad to see a Dawn of War game up there, I'm a little disappointed at the lack of a Halo title. But hey, can't please everyone!

I'll...I'll just leave this here shall I?
Hell, all of Civ4's sound track is outstanding even before we get to Nimoy...
I love the reprise of the original Civ theme.

I'm also a big fan of the Saboteur soundtrack, though that is mostly just a collection of songs not written for the game. Still I learnt of Madeleine Peyroux through this game.
This is possibly the most disturbingly pertinent song used in a WW2 setting ever.

Well I'm glad to see one from a Dawn of War game (even though it isn't the Imperial Guard theme), however, the total lack of Dynasty Warriors is distressing.

Also, I don't see what's so great about the Morrowind theme. It isn't bad at all, and it's definitely better than both Oblivion and Skyrim, but it still just sounds to me like your average, medieval fantasy music.

@octfish I liked the sabateur music, but the civ 4 music reminded me of a lion king, I wasnt sure it was a joke or not.

....

But there are sooooooo many amazing rts soundtrack out there. Seriously, the genre is notorious for its excellent music.

RTS as well as turn based strategy games are my favourite genres, so I've listened to a lot of soundtrack for both.

Pointless trivia: Baba Yetu is the only piece of game music to have ever won a Grammy award. Not sure why you think it's a joke mind you, I think it's beautiful.

I think there might be a strange communication breakdown between your ears and your brain if you think that sounds like Elton John.

My most memorable game soundtrack is the one from Deus Ex - fits perfectly with the theme and setting of the game, is almost Vangelis-y in moments, really dig it.

Quake anyone?

You lost me with your use of the word "real". Because, y'know, any such list you don't agree with is not "real".

Oh hey, and then you made a snide and irrelevant implication that any reviewer who approves of a new release is taking bribes didn't help. Cute. Because it's clearly impossible for someone to enjoy a new game on its own merits or - heavens above! - enjoy things that you don't.

Urrgh.

I'm in agreement. While Angels of Death is good, For the Craftworld nails it.

Every body is going to have different top-10 lists so it's understanding to check out the OPs and not recognize...a single track. I've played two of those games yeah but, I can't remember any of the music from Diablo or, Morrowind. Anyway that being said; Final Fantasy Mystic Quest! The battle music and, boss anthem are both excellent to the point of highlighting the whole game.
