But lets add a naive drop of optimism into the mix and say it's a long time until November... Microsoft could turn it around..? *sigh*
I WISH I had your level of optimism. I can't imagine MS will backtrack at this point. They've dug their grave, it's time for them to sleep in it. Regardless of the cost to the future generations of gaming.
I think there might be a chance they will back peddle in the future, sometime after launch. There is little chance of them doing it before launch because these corporations are always arrogant and never learn a lesson until they take. a whack or two (or many in some cases) where it hurts the most, in the wallet.
The PS4 will kick Microsoft's arse for them even before you start with the used game situations its a superior product, its significantly cheaper for a start. It supports SDTV and doesn't need an internet connection, those three things alone will ensure the PS4 will have a very strong head start, then you come to the issues surrounding used games and lending games to a friend as well as the inability to rent games. The list of problems doesn't end there either, privacy concerns, limited international support for the console itself as well as the devices main features. The list goes on and on.
So the PS4 will get out the gate quickly and when share prices keep crashing and the bottom line getting worse and worse Microsoft will have to act, I do not know how much the device cost to develop or how much it will cost to manufacture but I do know they have already invested $1 billion USD [http://uk.gamespot.com/news/microsoft-investing-1-billion-into-xbox-one-games-6408992] into games though.
Microsoft could easily be one or two billion in the hole with the Xbone already, they will have to recoup that. They will have to do something. If they do not want to admit they where stupid I can certainly see them relaunching an "Xbox One arcade" or something similar with many of its features and restrictions simply stripped out.
