Now I've played it all (AD&D, 3, 3.5 4E) and for the most part I have a good time either way. Now I play the FATE system. Strands of Fate is my game. But for some reason I feel that people give 4E an unfair shake. Even if it's not the greatest thing out there you can still find fun in those pages.

I think the problem is that 3 and 3.5 is windows. By witch I mean that the OGL is windows. One of my buddies tossed this theory out to me and it made a lot of sense. For a good long time everything you ran was powered by that little D20 and the OGL. Sure you may have ventured into the lands of RIFTS, Shadowrun or Dark Heresy but they where never as accessible the Tolkenish orc slaying you could already wrap you head around in D&D and if you got tired of killing orcs you could kill Ailens with Starship Troopers or enemy agents with Spy Craft or orcs in space with Dragonstar. All of these using nearly the same rules you already knew. And then these rules got refined and tweaked so much that even if you wanted good old D&D but thought it's a little off you ran Pathfinder.

Well what happened after that, 4E. D&D that wasn't windows, it was OSX and that is wrong because D&D is windows. Sure it was stable, but it wasn't industry standard.

Just my thoughts. And if your not having fun with 4E then I'm not trying to change your mind. Hell I even think it was a bad business move on wizards part. The OGL created a juggernaut and they should have kept ridding it.
