I feel more involved when my character has his purple potato hat on. It helps with immersion.

That's not my character's kidney on the floor, that's my kidney.

Something to do with something about updating PS3 version being a pain or something. I'm not too certain. Possibly something to do with not being able to give out new content for free, but that could be (probably is) Microsoft.

Let's people know who where's the hat around here. It makes valve money, this makes me happy since I get to get TF2 for free.

VALVe wants your money, plain and simple. And they're not providing anything substantial for it. It costs more than it should, more than is reasonable for cosmetic items, and yet people whine about DLC from other companies and place VALVe on a pedestal. Sad really.

The real question is "Why Not?" it was a minor cosmetic change that has since turned into a chicken that lays golden eggs, that break into money omelletes, or make obscene money chicks that are then slaughtered and turned into cash bacon for Gabe Newell to consume... Where was I going with this? Oh yes hats.
This video pretty much sums it up.

Because EA made that port, it had nothing to do with Valve.
Valve made it, EA just distributed. The problem is that the consoles are closed platforms, so its a much bigger pain to simply patch it as and when.

Gamers are notorious for being completionists. We aren't satisfied with merely being good at the game, we have to find every Easter egg, unlock every Achievement and collect every collectible. We also love character customization, as it makes us feel unique and stand out of the crowd (though one could argue that it kind of defeats the purpose when everyone else has the same items). Combine these factors with the artificial scarcity of hats and you've got the ultimate frivolous obsession.

Personally I don't really care about hats. Sure I've got some and enjoy changing my characters' appearances every so often, but ultimately I care much more about weapons, since they actually affect gameplay. For instance, I traded away my Towering Pillar of Hats a month ago for a Sticky Jumper. It's much more fun to launch myself across the map than it is to catch a glimpse of headgear when I press the taunt button.

It creates a sense of individuality for the player. That's why I like them. I'm not a hoarder of hats by any means, but I'll be damned if I don't try to get the ones I think look cool.

They also serve an interesting purpose in terms of economy. Not just the Mann-Conomy, but also Steam in general. Putting in a few cosmetic items that don't effect game-play as an intensive to buy a different game helps other games get attention and let's Valve get more potential customers.

They like hats because they like collecting hats.
Like collecting stamps or some shit, I dunno.
To each his own.

We do what we must.

Because we can.

I wanted a Towering Pillar of Hats on my nine classes, so I got a Towering Pillar of Hats on my nine classes. 'Tis that simple.
He who has the biggest hat is the most important. 40k has taught me that much.
You sir need to pick up Warmachine - I can sense a Menoth player in you....

As my friend pointed out to a new player 'look for the guy with the fancy hat - he'll be the leader'

Nope. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Orange_Box#Development] Valve did the 360 version, but the ps3 one was outsourced to EA, who fudged it horribly.

a good number of people here seem to be under the impression that:
1. hats NEED to be purchased and are unobtainable without spending money (other than the "upgrade from F2P thing", that's just basically buying the game)
2. hats are REQUIRED for gameplay (they aren't)
or some combination of the two.

so here are the facts:
Q. Why hats?
A. Why not hats? Valve originally added hats for whatever reason, they caught on, people started making their own, and Valve started putting the user-created stuff in the actual game. and since the Mannconomy Update, said creators are actually making money for their talents in 3D Modeling and such.

Q. Why are hats so expensive?
A. Because they're quite rare and quite difficult to obtain without spending any money. There are people who have owned TF2 for 2 years who haven't gotten a single hat drop. I got TF2 in the Summer of 2010 and have had 4 hats drop for me since. But this is true of ANYTHING, in games or real life. if something is rare, it becomes valuble.

Q. Why do people like hats?
A. For the same reason some people don't like hats; asthetic reasons. I for one love my Heavy Weapons Guy kitted out in a Blues Brothers ensamble of shades and a fedora (complete with a tiny Medic doll in his front pocket), since I think it looks more interesting than the stock HWG design. there may be those who disagree, but it's just like picking out clothes; everyone has different things that they think look good.

Q. Why are hats so sought after?
A. Aside from being unique and rare, hats are, at the heart of it, a purely asthetic thing. Just like a Shiny Pokemon. does it do anything extra? no. does it help you in any way? no. but do you want one? if you've ever played a Pokemon game from G/S up, the answer is yes. hats are many things. like a gemstone, they can be a fasion statement, a status symbol, a free load of cash, or just something someone likes. but like a gemstone, they also don't have any real purpose except to look nice.

in the end:
HATS
neccesary?
not really.
fun?
that depends on your opinion, but I'd say yes.
