I was just listening to this podcast:

http://www.magicbulletpodcast.com/?p=4

And I found it fascinating that the Roswell Crash debris only weighed 5 pounds. How is this possible? How could this incident have been blown so out of proportion? Also, they didn't mention how they knew that the debris weighed only 5 pounds. Does anyone know the answer?

I do not. How ever I do think that this incident happen'd. The reason it was so blown out of proportion is because it was the closest encounter we had with aliens so far.

There are entire books devoted both to trying to debunk and to trying to prove the Roswell incident, but general consensus, even amongst UFOlogists is that the Roswell incident wasn't a genuine encounter with extraterrestrials. But, chances are it got blown out of proportion the same way just about anything that's ever been blown out of proportion got blown out of proportion. Someone said something ridiculous, and someone else quoted them on it as if they were a reliable source, and shit went worse from there.

Allegedly.

Also; weather balloons are pretty damn light.

[sub]Also also; I'd like some conspiracy theory/weird and unexplained listening materials if you've got 'em.[/sub]

It just seems like its so insane that this incident is talked about so much, and yet, there debris wasn't even 5 lbs. And people talk about alien bodies, reverse engineering lasers, etc. In the podcast they make a good point and say 1950s USA reverse engineering an alien space ship is like ancient Romans reverse engineering a modern day nuclear submarine.

I don't claim to know whether or not we've ever been visited by extraterrestrials, but if I could point you to the post I made (that's right below yours, I was making it while yours got posted) the Roswell incident is widely believed to be a hoax even by most of the people who research UFO phenomena for a living. The only way you could make the claim that the Roswell incident was a genuine encounter with life from another planet is if you'd never done any research on the issue at all. If you wanted to make the case that we'd been visited by extraterrestrials, there are much better case studies you could point to than Roswell.

And someone found money in it. Smaller towns do all sorts of wacky things to "brand themselves", aliens aren't even particularly strange.

Did anyone else watch Roswell in the 90's?

Well, the podcast I posted http://www.magicbulletpodcast.com/2010/10/episode-iv-the-roswell-crash/ was pretty entertaining, but they only have 1 episode so far.

I have been traveling up to Forks, Washington for a few years now for work and I liked the town a lot more before the first Twilight movie came out. It was a quite little town before that. So yeah, totally with you on small towns doing wacky things.

OT: I am glad to see there are not large numbers of people going on about aliens here.

The only thing I'm willing to bet is that it probably wasn't a weather balloon. I mean come on, the government uses the lame "experimental weather balloon" cover-up every freakin' time something happens. So I have a hard time believing that.

What do you think it was then?

I don't know. Alien spaceship? Experimental aircraft? It COULD be a weather balloon, I just find it unlikely because according to the government they're always launching extremely strange looking weather balloons that always crash under odd circumstances.

...and I'm off to listen to Soul Coughing now...

[small]...unmarked helicopters, hovering, the lord is coming soon, unmarked helicopters, hovering, they said it was a weather balloon...[/small]

Seriously, consiracy theorists have way too much faith in people.
