Pretty straightforward question.

What is, in your opinion, the scariest monster (non-humans only) in gaming?

Depends. In or out of context?

Out of context: the plaster-coated spider splicers from Bioshock.

In context: the gatherers from Amnesia.

The Yeti from SkiFree. Thing was a murderous psychopath.

Dahaka from Prince of Persia Warrior Within. I was terrified of him when I first played the game. The first chase was the scariest. It was unexpected and you felt fucked.

Non-human only? Well that knocks out my answer of "man" right off the bat. Now I have to put forth the effort to remember some kind of cosmic horror or something at least mildly unsettling. Fear isn't my emotion, so this is gonna be difficult.

Ah...

Hm...

Probably Wallmasters. They're just perpetually unsettling in the same way spiders are.

Couldn't agree more, to be honest. While the monsters from Amnesia kinda look silly when you see them in a... non-scary environment, they're absolutely terrifying while playing the game.

I think the first enemy to really scare the crap out of me in a video game is the Dopefish in Commander Keen 4.

Tonberry.

Cute and cuddly...and he'll slice you up like Pyramid Head if he gets close to you. Alternatively, there's always "Everyone's Grudge"...

And then there's Wobbufett

Suffice to say that if you see one, you'll kill it, but there's a darn good chance that you'll lose whatever pokemon goes out to face it. While this makes it annoying at the best of times and dangerous if you're in an actual match, seeing one can be absolutely horrifying if you're doing a Nuzlocke run, which dictates that any pokemon that faints must be treated as if it were killed (meaning you release it at the next opportunity).

While I do believe Yahtzee is 100% correct in condemning the monsters in the Dead Space series as being not so much "scary" as they are "startling" just by jumping out of the vents. You have to admit that from an aesthetic point of view, there's some REALLY creepy shit in those games. The ones that creeped me out the most where the super-speed military necromorphs from DS 1...the whole rapid movement with twitchy/jerky body motions just creeps me right the fuck out.

same thing I was gonna say! Used to wanna avoid rooms I knew they were in cuz the sound they made gave me chills. Was a couple times I actually muted the tv like a sissy, then made myself back and listen to them for several mins as redemption.
