Mass Effect 2 the greatest game of all time? you fucking kidding me?
We never said it's the "Greatest game of all time", it just happens to be the game that more Escapists consider in their top 5 favourites than anything else. I mean, it got 161 of 4407 votes, it's hardly a landslide victory.

Ocarina of TIme

"Nintendo 64 - Gamecube - iQue Player - Virtual Console - 3DS"

You going to count 3D as the same game? Really?

And Vice City only socring 12 votes, shame on you Escapist, shame on you (but indicative of a bias towards games of this gen (from a console perspective)).

9/10 are 'relatively' recent PC titles.

This doesn't surprise me - nor does it anger me. This is a popularity chart after all, so a PC bias is to be expected - especially since the games deserve favor anyway.

To the nipick-mobile!

So... which nine games would those be?

Bioshock and both Mass Effect games are primarily console titles. Sure, they got PC ports, but then Portal 1+2, Oblivion, Half Life 2 and Dragon Age all got console versions.

Also in response to Ezrapound its not that the escapists have a bad memory its that the majority of the people voting are under the age of 13 and havent been gaming very long anyways so we end up with garbage lists like this.
HOORAY FOR BASELESS, ELITIST ASSUMPTIONS!

Also, suggestion

When you're doing this next year (which I assume you will), why not do it on a points system rather than a votes system? Like have people rank their top five and give number 1s 5 points and number 5s a point. I realize this would make counting longer but you could have multiple people counting points and it would make this into a favourite game overall list rather than just a "game that was on the most lists" list

Great work, pal. Somehow, when i was reading your post, i was imagining your avatar reading it with a sleepy voice, i dunno why. Anyways, i like the results. Even though i didn't really like ME2 ( i think i selected the wrong class when playing it, but maybe it just wasn't for me- it felt like over half the game i was just collecting crew-mates...), i can see it being on first place. All the others are well suited for the top 10. Don't really remember what i voted for, so can't say if i selected popular ones or not.

Anyways, thanks for doing it, quite interesting to see the results! Looking forward to next years' one!

First of all, great job with the list. It's a pretty ambitious thing to do, and the result came out great :D

As for the list itself, I don't intend to spark any controversy with this (nor do I think I will), but it always ticks me off a little when Mass Effect 2 is on the top of these kinds of lists. ME2 is a fantastic game, awesome gameplay, really cool universe, all that jazz. But the story is nowhere near the level of quality it needs to be to top these kinds of lists. It's not terrible, but it has far too many problems to not drag the game down. I know I'm not the only one bothered by it, but I'm always a little surprised at how small of a minority I belong to, especially considering how much the Internet likes to hate on popular things (not that I mind that it for once doesn't).

Anyway, looks like The Escapist has a great taste in games, not that it comes as a surprise to anyone ^^

Y'know... I might just do that.

Jade Empire didn't make the top 100. That saddens me.

Still, great job with the whole thing. A really nice initiative.

Nice work.

The top 10 is a bit bland, as is to be expected with statistics. Still its some titles that deserve the credit.

I'll study the runners up list to see if I have missed some essential landmarks of gaming.

Rant: Grim Fandango is sooo much better than Mass Effect, I call shenanigans. ;-)

I have learned a valuable lesson.
I REALLY need to pick up the Mass Effect series
And did it surprise anyone that three of the top six are Valve games? And three of the top ten are bioware?
Hope someone doesn't get offended that a certain game set didn't make the top position.
I had to laugh at all the pokemon games that made it in the top 100.
Cpt Oblivious, I awesome your avatar was how you felt trying to get all the votes straight.
When will I learn to stop voting for S.L.A.I.? It's probably one of the many that only got one vote.

This top 10 is terrible. IT should read the top 10 of the last 5 years cause few if any of these are top 10 of all time material.
Opinion
Mass Effect 2 the greatest game of all time? you fucking kidding me? How can ME2 be the best game of all time when ME1 was a better game than it? Fail list is fail.
Again, Opinion, not fact.
Also in response to Ezrapound its not that the escapists have a bad memory its that the majority of the people voting are under the age of 13 and havent been gaming very long anyways so we end up with garbage lists like this.
Or, maybe games have gotten better. I loved doom, still do. That doesn't make it better than Halo (flame shield, etc. Compare gameplay). Hell, I've been forcing (heh heh) my way through Dark Forces for the PS1. Maybe people don't vote for those older games because they aren't as good anymore.
And don't you have to be older than 13 to sign up here? Yeah, I know that it doesn't take much to move the age bar, but have a little bit of confidence in the community. Age doesn't mean that you're a better gamer, just that you've gone through older games. And seeing as you can replay the older "greats" makes age irrelevant. Nostalgia is a powerful force.
Games have gotten better. My top 10 list has some older games in it (SMB 3, Doom, Chrono Trigger), but a lot of older games don't play nearly as well as you remember.
