Now that The Secret World is no longer P2P I was wondering if I should give it a shot. It would help to read what anyone who has played it/ is playing it thinks of the game. I think it looks good and I like the premise but the last (and first) time this happened I ended up with SWTOR.

Hey buddy. Like you, I sat on the fence with this game and took a chance now it's buy and play. Coming from GW2 (which has disappointed me greatly) TSW is a fresh look at MMO gaming. The setting alone makes it a worthwhile purchase. I've only been playing it for 4 days and I'm hooked. So much so, I'm thinking about subbing to support the devs. You get some in game cash and some perks if you sub but it's not required. So far I'm yet to find anything negative about TSW. For £25 its worth the cash in my opinion. It is more of a solo MMORPG so if PVP rocks you're world you'll be aching for something more. I hope this helps.

To be honest, the actual combat and character customization is pretty average but the story and setting is one of the best I've ever seen in any MMO to date. It's very different from most other MMOs but that's not necessarily a bad thing. As I'm from New Zealand, the connection for me is slightly laggy at times and can be un-responsive, but it doesn't seem to ruin the game. It's definitely worth a try, It's not perfect but it's also not terrible.

I was actually on the fence about it even after it dropped its sub because I had recently bought Guild Wars 2, setting me back about $50, but then I saw that it was only $15 on Amazon and what with members who signed up before the end of December the getting the new content update for free, it was a no brainer for me.

And I have to say, I am very, very satisfied with my purchase. They do the theme incredibly well and while the basic quest line is more of a traditional theme park MMO, it's probably the best one out there in that you actually want to explore and learn the plotline of every area. Plus it actually manages to get a couple of scares in on you too, which is very impressive for a hotbar combat based MMO.

I played the trial for a couple of days and whilst I found the combat rather dull, the crafting system lumpy and unfulfilling, the interface of my character with the gameworld sketchy and explanation of things highly hit and miss, the story, characters and atmosphere are top drawer.

Also it has wossname from The Frighteners and that episode of Babylon 5 in it.

EDIT: Jeffrey Combs

EDIT EDIT: Going slightly off topic, does a one off fee mean that the developers won't be supporting it any longer or is there a micro-transaction system sitting behind it?

I played it on release for a few months and actually quite enjoyed it.

As people have said, the combat isn't the greatest and some weapon combinations are incredibly overpowered but the story and atmosphere is quite good.

May I ask which factions you guys played as? I played as the Illuminati who I found to be hilarious.

Templars (i'm British, it was the logical choice).

Using Elemental/Assault rifles.

How are the puzzles or whatever they are? I don't wanna get stuck on those and break the "flow".

Ahh, is that like so you can use the assault rifle skills to heal yourself and the elemental to make the enemy go boom?

There was a rather jolly quest involving logging in to a fake website to check the company telephone list for someone's name to guess a password, all done through the in game browser.

I must confess that most of the other puzzles are pattern based ones that I basically used a walkthrough on.

They are a great and fresh distraction from the bland and repetitive questing. Granted, you have bloody good reasons to farm those 20 zombies for that dude that gave you the quest, but doing it might be a chore if you are familiar with MMORPGs.

As long as the reason is good, i don't mind typical quests of the genre.

Now if only i could figure out how the hell i can find time to play this one too, already games piled up.

It's also a good time to join, with the end of the world event and some new stuff coming out, new weapon, missions and all :)

I'm glad this game is getting more adherents.

Yep.

I never have been much for melee in MMO's so those 2 fit me well. The leech effects that AR's give was pretty good for self healing and elemental was just great fun.

Especially good AoE's so it was easier for groups of mobs which was fun. Drop a Whiteout and spam chain lightning until things fall over.

Too bad you didn't try it before - there was a great free trial before they dropped subscription, but I don't think it's active anymore. :(

Anyway, the setting is great - that much you know. The missions are mostly standard MMO fare, but they play a lot faster than The Old Republic. And then there's Investigation Missions, which are unlike anything anyone's ever done in an RPG and an amazing treat for solo players ('cause they don't require you to do much fighting) if one likes that sort of thing. Combat can be a bit hit-and-miss - there are no predetermined classes, so you need to carefully craft your build to advance. Fortunately, Ability Points are plenty and you can easily farm for extra XP if you mess up.

On the whole - if you can afford it, definitely go for it.

As I understand it, patches and some new content (hopefully the Story Missions) will still be free, but most new missions will be sold as DLC packs. You can also pay a monthly Membership fee for some additional benefits, but they're not implementing the kind of "pay-to-win model" that F2P games are infamous for.

Well, then hop in. It has the level of acting that SW:ToR had and a much better atmosphere IMO, and while the PvP is an aftertought at least its not Huttball.

I am just waiting for a Funcom response about my account. Bought the game to get into beta months ago, then took a break for GW2 and now i just dont know if i have an account or not.... freaking funcom and their shitty customer service, a week so far and no answer.

As for when to play... dude i have literally hundreds of games that i have yet to finish... but if they don't compel me then eff them!

I've only played about 5 hours or so of it but so far I suffer no buyers remorse as I find it worth it for the setting, style and gameplay so far. I can see myself playing it longer then a single player game and still getting enjoyment from it in the long term. Worth the cash for a well polished game even though I doubt I'll bother with it once I get to the point where it gets too hard to solo.

OMG! It seems my account its finally working. The mofos couldn't be bothered to give me a heads up, nor even an automated response to my customer service petition, but after a week... it works :D

Anyone know how populated is Cerberus this days? And how is Fusang in Cerberus and Arcadia?
