We here in the west are still some of the most stuck up when it comes to sex.

Some of the most stuck up eh? You're using a comparative, which implies someone else is less or least. Tell us please about some of these large, liberated, progressive non-Western societies where sex is always a positive form of expression devoid of unfortunate social consequences.

Japan, Germany, England, most of Western Europe in fact. Ever see their commercials? Boobs show up everywhere. Games there get banned in Germany for violence, not sex. Generally sex doesn't even come up when they discuss banning them. Here in the US we go OMG SEX BAAAAAAD, rather than their OMG VIOLENCE BAAAAAD (frankly I feel the "Violence bad" attitude is a bit more logical, as you kinda need that whole sex thing for making babies). I'm not saying their prejudice versus violence is better, I'm just saying that the US is generally freaked up by sex.

Also, your thesis was that "the West" is stuck up, and your other candidates for liberated countries are all Western. The US is generally freaked out yes, but you are exhibiting a "grass is greener on the other side" cognitive bias.

Firstly, she labelled herself a slut when she told me this (where the first question stemmed from) and I attempted to convince her that I didn't think she was, regardless of my actual opinion, just to not make her feel bad.

I said I'm pretty sure that's not the case because on the topic of her father I had asked her twice before if he ever did anything to hurt her and she adamantly said no both times, although he apparently physically abused her mother on two occasions. It is a very plausible possibility that she may have been lying but I hope she would have told the truth to me considering I have told her some home truths, not of the same vein as sexual abuse, but of the same personal nature.

You don't get to call her what she gets to call herself.

Also, you told her some of your 19 year old boy drama so she what, owes you her confidence? You have a long hard road to maturity ahead of you. Maybe even as long as mine was from your age.

I think I'm more qualified to have an opinion of a person I actually know than you, and I define the term "slut" as having really gotten around, which she has, so I feel although it is slightly derogatory, it is still accurate.

And 19 year old boy drama? Please! It's not just like "OMG dis girl turned me down again!", you really have no idea. And I have no intention of continuing this debate further for fear of my saying too much about myself on my family PC and for fear of derailing this thread completely.

Nope, I've seen Japanese commercials and TV and things of that nature (hell, vending machines) that would never, ever, show up in the typical US area due to their sexual content. And as to my 'thesis', I was talking about America, mostly. When I say 'the west' I generally mean 'of the Atlantic, east of the Pacific, in the Northern Hemisphere'. Probably should have just put North America, but ah well.

Well, confusion often happens when you use terms that have special definitions for you instead of the meanings everybody else has agreed upon. Here in Japan we don't mean "America" when we say "West." And we have derailed the thread so I'll say no more.

Sorry as for what would seem like a blatant bump but I've just read the posts that didn't quote me.

So the majority seem to believe that the attitude not the number is the main factor in a situation like this.

I suppose I must be more small minded or insecure than the majority of you, that I think to be worried about how many guys a girl has been with before me, but most of you make a fair point in that; if a girl really was special I wouldn't care about how many guys she'd been with before me so long as I got to be with her.

For a casual affair though I'd still be really put off by her having been with more people than me.
