WElp I played Nightreign this weekend and I can confirm it is really really bad.

If you like ER or Souls games you'll mostly be annoyed by the time limited exploration and being queued with idiots who run off thinking they know better and just die. When you have a team of people on voice chat or friends who are decent at Souls games, the game is a cakewalk because FormSoft AI still doesn't handle multiple people fighting it at once.

I killed two of the 8 night lords, and both of those were with friends. I killed none with randoms.

Additionally the map is just a modded version of the first zone in ER. But it feels like most of the caves and such have been removed so you can't get trapped underground when the circle closes on you. There are four random events that can occur called "shifting earth" in which the center of the map gains a new feature like becoming a volcano. None of these change the map very much nor do they change anything.

So with no randomness in a Rouge-like game, what is going to happen is people will figure out the optimal route to level up to 15 ASAP, and beat the boss easy. There are only 8 final bosses and you know which you'll get because you pick the Lord at the start, just like starting a monster hunter mission. It's so boring, nothing happens.

And let's be real, RNG items in a Souls game isn't fun, because it's entirely possible to get stuck with weapons that you hate, forcing you to deal with a shitty moveset you hate. It's not nearly as interesting a concept as you think because the game not only repeats the 105+ weapons, you can find upgraded versions of those weapons, which means there are like 400 possible weapon drops. Making the odds of you getting something you like, very low.

I do not like it, and I hope this game makes everyone retroactively hate ER so I can stop hearing about it.

Wait, so what part of it is roguelike? I thought it would be like the chalice dungeons from Bloodborne but with more focus and development resources, which sounds really good, because the chalice dungeons were really cool but a little underbaked.

You get random weapons and items as your progress, and the bosses that spawn in the level are random. That's pretty much it.

Fighting Cowboy was one of my favorite go-tos when I needed a competent walkthrough assist; here's his review of Nightreign. Basically middle of the road for him: a lot done right, a lot done wrong, and which camp any Elden Ring fan will fall into is based heavily on their expectations. As I am a mediocre ER player a BEST, and not been into multiplayer for the netter part of a decade, Nightreign was never realistically on my radar, so I'm probably going to defer picking this up any time soon if I ever do.

@CriticalGaming nailed it; playing with friends is how best to enjoy Nightreign, and pairing up with randos turns into a very frustrating ordeal.

This is why Kojima had to direct every MGS game lol. Hopefully FROM/Miyazaki take notes, and call this an experiment at best. Quality over quantity wins in the gaming industry like, every time.

I have no interests in Night Reign, but if most people are liking it fine, warts and all, then I see no big issue.

If there is an evergaol near the final circle of day 1 you can open it to spawn the boss then leave, when you come back on day 2 it has half health but will give day 2 rewards

One of the best tips I don't see anyone online (streaming or info-content) doing is "How to use items when they're on the ground". So, if you don't have room for that exalted flesh (or other item) in your inventory, don't let it be squandered on the ground. Hold Y (or triangle) and press the up arrow, this allows you to use the item that is on the ground without having to pick it up. It's a small hint that won't make a lot of difference, but in some encounters it can be very helpful. I.E. if there's a boiled crab on the ground and your inventory is full, do this and use it for the buff without having to pick it up. It's better than just leaving it on the ground to be wasted... Hope everyone is having as much fun as I am, Cheers mates! See you in Limveld!

Having a blast playing with randoms tbh. My only issue im constantly seeing is that yall need to stop going for them field bosses knowing you’re only level 6 and under 😅
,~!~!~

So it’s a game of leveling basically, but certain things can help make it easier (good allies, items, strategies, etc.)

One steam review put it best "the game is exactly what they said it would be but everyone had their own head canon on what it should be".

Either way I ain’t playing it anytime soon.
