well the absolute 'best' way to get a close shave is with warm cream, one of those shaving brush things, and a straight razor.
Watching Sweeney Todd put me off that. Coupled with my rather shitty shaving skills already, a straight razor coupled with my fear of straight razors would end with me doing this.

You're a month away from the greatest month ever. Movember is only 2 weeks away. Let it grow!

Laser hair removal is the closest you can get.
And the best part? You'll never have to shave it again!

That is sad. Beards are a gift!

What is this Movember? I am intrigued.

OT: You could try getting some of the pre-shave crap, makes the hairs stand up more.

What does "against the grain" mean? Sorry, I'm idiot when it comes to shaving, I had to teach myself and didn't start until I was like 15, plus I use cheap disposable razors. I have the same problem, not sure if it's my crappy shaving skills, the crappy razor, or both...
Basically: shave up your face, not down.

OT: Go against the grain, and use one of those multi blade non electric razors. I like the Shick Hydro because four blades just aren't enough to rub on my face. Also, try using your other hand to stretch your skin taut. Also, don't shave. Beards are God's great gift to man, and mustaches are the classy way to look like a 70's porn star without getting a horrible disease.

Real men shave dry... and with a machete!
Would you believe I've kinda done that? I used to shave with my pocket knife in the dorm shower with just tap water because I couldn't afford shaving cream. It was probably the most manly thing that happened on the Baptist University's campus, and I often did it with Disney soundtracks blasting from my room as I sang along with a large knife to my own throat. The looks I got were priceless.

When I fail to catch everything with my automatic razor, I use a temporary straight edge to get the rest. Persistence is my technique.

It started as(and still is) a charity event. But any excuse to grow a porn stache is good enough for me. Personally I've never had good enough facial hair growth up until this point. But now I can grow some decent face-locks that I have to do it.

There's also Mustache March if you miss Movember. :p

Basically find the way the hair lies down, and go in the opposite direction with your shave, from end of the hair towards the source. Typically it's something like start at the base of your throat and move up towards your face.

As for the OP: You just need a better razor it sounds like. It may be that your blades are dull, or that the razor design itself isn't very good. I'm not sure, but you definitely shouldn't have a visible shadow after using a manual razor.

Don't shave against the grain. It isn't good for your face.

Here's my recommendation. Really my recommendation is to learn to use a straight razor...but I'm going to assume you aren't going to do that...but you should. If you don't get a straight razor, I recommend an old school safety razor...because modern razors cartridges are a complete rip-off, especially if you replace the blades as often as you should.

Here are two websites where you can buy blades and brushes:
http://www.shaveshop.com/
http://www.straightrazordesigns.com/

So the process:

1. Lather up your soap with your brush using warm water.
2. Wet a washcloth with hot water and wet your face with it. It will open your pores and give you a better shave.
3. Lather up
4. Shave *with* the grain first (i.e. following the direction your hair grows).
*While shaving clean the blade with after every stroke. Don't ever take a second stroke when there are little bits of hair on the blade.
*While shaving have a light touch, don't press down too hard on your skin.
5. After you have shaved with the grain, for a closer shave, next shave across the grain...at 90-degree angle to the way your hair grows.
6. Now, at this point, if you are the sort of person who has really coarse and think hair and have big problems with getting a good shave, what you do now is use your fingers and feel your face. Feel for patches where there is still hair that is being a problem. For those patches only, you can shave again *almost* against the grain...but not quite. If against the grain is 180-degrees angles to the way your hair grows, go with 170-degrees.
7. Use the hot washcloth to get all the soap off.
8. Rinse out your soap mug and rinse out your brush.
9. Wring out your washcloth and run it under really cold water. Then put the cold water on your face to close your pores.
10. Use whatever other post-shaving ritual you use...after shave, lotion, etc.

Follow-up. If you have really, really coarse hair, you should be changing your blades very regularly. One way or another you should switch up every week....maybe more if your hair is really coarse. If you have a straight razor, you wouldn't have to change blades, just strop the blade...maybe get it professionally sharped once every two years.

Note: Shaving too close can lead to ingrown hairs and skin damage, so be kind to your skin.

Why just the moustache? Why not just go the whole nine yards for No-shave November?

A decent non disposable razor, like a quattro or such. doesn't really matter much since they're all pretty much the same price.

And remember, shave WITH the grain BEFORE you shave against the grain or you are in for a world of pain.

Movember is a month where you grow as large and impressive of a mustache as you can in support of prostate cancer research. You can sign up for teams and companies will donate amounts based on the number of members (at least here in Canada.)

Because anyone can just "not shave". It takes effort to groom an immaculately shaved mustachio.

My beard won years ago. I can't really get a close shave anyways and it saves a lot of money and cuts and irritation. Just trim it now.
