Okay, you all have used up the usage allotment of the word "elitist" for the next ten years. The internet overuses and misunderstands the concept enough without a thread devoted to it. Most of the stories in this thread is people disregarding the qualifications of other people based upon their own delusions of superiority.

OP: She thought you were a know-it-all, she put you in your place. What you said was contradictory. Alcohol is absorbed and filtered at set rates. Therefor any delay stretches and flattens the curve. She didn't need to present a valid argument, because you already had all the necessary parts of the equation, you just solved it incorrectly.
I think you missed the point there. Not so much about whether she was right or not but how she argued.

You actually have it the wrong way around. She began it by stating that in every instance it will change it, which it won't. 1 unit of alcohol is absorbed per hour. The average drink has between 1.8 and 2.8 units in it (Or at least, the measures we use in the UK does). This was all based by the way, on eating a meal before going out, and not constantly eating, which would consitently absorb the alcohol. As I stated, at best it will delay it by 20 minutes. By which point, the liver would have processed 1/3 of a unit of alcohol, thereby having no effects.

What I just wrote was my argument for this (not including her constant interruptions). The main point of the thread by the way, was that she had no real reasoning or evidence for what she thought, except the fact that she is currently in higher education and I am not, which is irrelevant to our argument.

You should also double check 'know-it-all'. Just because I have knowledge of a subject, doesn't make me a know it all. It makes me a person with knowledge of that subject.

I'll admit that I usually AM that elitist prick, but I try to pull it off in a manor in which is at least humorous or endearing.

People don't talk to me like that. In the social circles that I have been around, I have been the person who has the most qualifications to act like a snob, and the others know it. But, precisely because of that fact, I choose not to do so because its obnoxious.

If someone did act like a snob near me, then I would have no compunction about turning that person into a fool in front of all who are there to bear witness.
Maybe that's why we get along.
Maybe, maybe. ;P

Okay, so I was at a barbecue on Sunday, when the shift turned to drinking. I'd not long been on a course that had a portion where drinking and it's effects were explained. My argument is that I'd been told for a fact that eating doesn't stop how drunk you get, merely slows it down by around 20 minutes. I knew this was a fact.

However, a girl there disagreed, and when I asked her to explain why she disagreed, her response was simply "Do you even go to uni? So you probably don't know what you're talking about"

That was it. No 'show me proof' or anything, just the fact that she's managed to squeeze some money out to go to uni. Bearing in mind I'm currently on a gap year before starting uni, this is the kind of thing that's particularly incensed me.

So escapists, tell of your experiences here; I'm curious to know whether anyone else has experienced this level of snobbery.
I was once sat down with some friends by this path near a woods, just by some houses. We'd been walking and wanted a break. All of a sudden this fairly old couple start telling us off for being on 'private property', they were actually being really arsey about it, especially considering there wasn't even a fucking sign.
The best part? The guy went to his neighbours house, banged on the door and then when the bloke answered said something along the lines of "'Ere", pointing at us, "Watch this lot".

How fucking arrogant.

i encounter people like that occasionally, but they generally just repeat what they said using different wording in order to explain themselves, when i prove them wrong they just say "no because (restate their point in different wording)". quite fusterating but also i usually end up laughing to myself as i walk away.

While I am definitely not what you would call 'book smart' (my education level is not anything to be proud of ^.^) I know full well I am quite elitist, more so in gaming but it shows itself often enough in real life. It goes hand in hand with my cynical personality.

I do however tend to keep quiet and sit on the sidelines most of the time, observation being one of the most dangerous weapons one can acquire. ^.^

I tend to follow the theory of "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something." quite closely, it is actually my favorite quote.

The only way to prove someone like this wrong is by direct example! Therefore, you should get her to eat a lot, and drink a lot, then she'll be very drunk! And, you know, people who are pretty drunk tend to be slightly more suggestible, nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more!

Being "book-smart" is probably the one thing that keeps people interested in what I have to say in the real world. I have extensive knowledge not only of History and Political Science (my majors), but also quite a bit about current events. People around me tend to treat me like a "living dictionary" at times because of this.

It gets annoying sometimes, but it at least tends to keep people from being snobbish around me. :)

I guess I envy you a little there.

Unless it's gaming or anime related, people tend to ignore what I attempt to say.
Often followed up by a timely "I told you so" when they realize. =3

My friends decided I wasnt worth their time just because "we have lives to lead"
yeah... getting drunk and wasting a hell of a lot of money on a piece of paper that promises nothing really makes your time much more valuable than mine...

I went to uni for about 3 months and hated it there, everybody held an undeserved sense of pride in just being there so I left :|

Sure, in that hypothetical, you're correct. But thats not how the fact works. If you eat while drinking that does mitigate the effects of alcohol, allowing one to drink more for a longer period of time. It slows the rate of absorption and helps filtering.

You were misunderstanding the argument and presenting situations where what you said was correct. But are not the situations in which what you were attempting to disprove is held as fact.

To parallel you were attempting to argue watering a plant doesn't help it grow, because if you water the ground before you plant it, then plant it in the moist soil, (and never water it again) it will still die. When in reality, you need to water regularly.

Thing is, random people aren't your teachers. Its elitist to act like you are entitled to clear and thorough explanations whenever you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. She wasn't being elitist, she simply didn't care enough to give a shit about you, and wanted you to shut up. She was, on the other hand, being immature. But most people can't deal with insufferable pedants, which is exactly what you sound like.

2 days later, it's still annoying me lol.
I'm guessing you completely lost the argument then.
I did, because she quoted the exact words I said, bar the part that made the argument. I said it doesn't make you less drunk, merely slows it down because food latches on to the alcohol. She said it makes you less drunk for the same reason, leaving out the important fact. So I was left there to stew while she was sitting there being all smug because she can use google and lie.
How did you lose the argument then? shouldn't you have just added that little detail she left out?
No, I didn't get that far. She was already launching into a rant about how she knew more by this point. This was the point I got up and left because I nearly did punch her. Basically, I ragequit the topic.
Nice to know that "It is never okay to hit other people" thing your parents taught you sunk in. Just ignoring her is the best thing you can probably do. It isn't like it has any real impact on your life.

I've encountered plenty of people who have looked down on me because I don't have a degree, or because I'm not working towards one. I hope that as I get older I will be able to meet people the same age as me who don't only talk about uni...it's a phase...right? I don't mean to be rude, but your chemistry course is actually pretty boring to hear about, which would be ok...if you didn't dismiss my attempts to talk about anything else and force the subject back onto your education.

I also know people who constantly talking themselves up, and making claims of superiority. I don't know if such people genuinly believe what they are saying, or if they are complimenting themselves because nobody else is doing it for them...but I wish they'd shut up.

Yep, it's just a phase.

Unfortunately when they get out of that phase they start talking about their jobs, partners, kids, houses, material possessions, etc. Bunch of useless boring shit.

See, the elitism I normally face typically arises when I talk about my computer. I build computer as a hobby, so I naturally talk about it. Occasionally I'll have an unforeseen compatibility issue with drivers, or on one occasion, an interface. Or, it'll be something stupid like trying to find a stable overclock. Either way, whenever I begin to talk about this to another tech savvy friend, the Mac fag always has to walk by. Its not one person, but a mentality. They typically hear something involving the words "Gigabyte", "Gigahertz", "cache", "optical", or "computer" and butt in, typically with the same line of "Well, I know a thing or two about computers", which as any true tech person knows, translates directly to "I used photoshop in a class in highschool. I also have a facebook". So then they ask what my issue is, and I explain it in the typical way I would talk to a system builder. I then get a weird look, so I explain it in dumbed down form. I always get the same answer, which is typically "Oh, see, you should never try to mess with that. That's why I buy Macs", which makes me laugh, make a snide comment about Fisher Price My First Computer, then sit back down.

Yes, Mac Elitism is really annoying. If you like em, great. If you hate em, great. If you can explain exactly why you like them without talking about "crashing" then I might even listen.
