The Simpsons: Still the best?

Now I enjoy Family Guy, American Dad, Futurama, South Park, and the like. But there is a show that still holds a special place in my heart, and that show is The Simpsons.

To me, The Simpsons is one of the few multi-layered comedy cartoons around. I've watched just about all of the older episodes about ten times over, and laughed my arse off. Yet I watch them again as an older and more knowledgeable person, and I see a whole new layer of comedy that I simply didn't understand as a young'n, leaving me thinking 'how did they get away with that??' And this is why I scoff whenever any of the above is compared to The Simpsons.

Now we are getting into the more recent series, here I was thinking to myself that Matt Groening would be running out of ideas, and yet they are still going relatively strong. Granted, they aren't as memorable or multi-layered as the older episodes, but still good for laughs.

The question: Do you consider The Simpsons to be the best animated comedy show out there? Did you but not now? Hate it? Do you think it has any chance of stopping now?

Discuss.

I think Groening said they'd only consider stopping when they had at least one episode for every day of the year. So we just have to wait for him to run out of ideas.

Boy I haven't' watched the Simpsons in years. I don't even know if it's a bad or good show now. I'm just sick of it since I've seen it to much.

I think pretty much every episode made since 300th (The Tony Hawk one I believe) has been complete and utter rubbish. The classics are just as great but now it's trying to be like a child friendly Family Guy in it's randomness and irrelevant jokes.

It used to be great, the new stuff is crap basically. I prefer Futurama as the "randomness" at least makes a bit more sense.

What Pimpeteer said about Family Guy and South Park is true also.

Aside from Futurama it's still the best.

Which is more a damning statement on it's rivals than high praise for itself. The other shoes simply don't have the production values or writing to compete even with the current not so wonderful episodes of the Simpsons.

Futurama's brilliant though, the more mental it gets the better. I'm worried about the new series though.

Well other than the fact that No-Show can be better than Futurama The Simpsons is still a good show. The new episodes aren't bad though they're not great but not bad still better than South Park or Family Guy in my book

I much prefer Family Guy. I used to love the Simpsons for its amazing humour, but with the more recent seasons it's seen such a rapid decline in actual enjoyable moments that I don't watch it any more. I still enjoy the originals however.

Not a huge fan of the more recent ones, but I loved series 2-11 or so. (1 is a little too slow for me) But I think Simpsons get a bad rap in the world of adult-cartoon comedy simply because it isn't "bad" enough. Now I respect South Park, but half of what makes that show so popular is it's controversy. Same goes with Family Guy.

Simpsons just doesn't go too far with sex jokes and whatnot, and that's why I respect it. It is one of the few comedy shows out there that prove you don't always need sex jokes to make something funny for older people. You just need good writers.

Never really got why Futurama was so popular; it just seems like a less-funny Simpsons to me.

But yes, the Simpsons is still my favorite animated comedy. Family Guy took that spot for about a year, but now it's become considerably worse. Every new Family Guy "joke" ties into sex somehow; I wouldn't mind this if the jokes were FUNNY, but they've gone to the point where they just talk about sex so they're more "mature", even though in my opinion it just makes them look stupid.

I actually prefer Futurama, because it broke away from the whole family thing, more animated shows need to do something like this.

Unfortunately no it is not. While the best in the sense it is better than the other 'cartoons' that are similar however it is definitely showing its age. I had not seen a new episode of The Simpsons in a year or two and watched the one were Bart is blackmailing Skinner with a peanut. It was amusing, yet ridiculously stupid. Mostly I got a Har Har out of it however that is the child within loving, not the both of us.

Family Guy: Ugh, I quit watching it probably a year or so after it came back. The show is just devoid of any logical sense and repeats the same jokes over and over again.

South Park: Never was a huge fan of the show, found is stupid although it most certainly could be rather funny. It was just too crude for my taste.

Futurama: Found it utterly stupid initially however I did warm to the show after my cousin whined for me to watch more episodes. It is not half bad.

Best advice I have for Groening as he does not seem willing to end the series is to take it off for a full year, thus giving them time to write good material and also to take it away from the public eye. The Simpsons is in actuality much better if you have not watched it in a long while.
