Well here is a video how Mcdonald do their burger. They pretty much use photoshop to fix it up. Pretty much we can't actually deliver this type of food to you.

Well looks like they got that down to a science.

As a man who's taken Media Psychology, I find this very common and unsurprising...if somewhat revolting. Advertisements are not made to be truthful or anything. They're meant to stimulate you into wanting what's being talked about. Of course, Captcha ads fail at this in a fatal manner for being so damn annoying, but that won't stop 'em from making 'em of many sites like these from using 'em. Fact is, the Escapist is being paid to pretty much wreck business for whoever's there.

Oh God! The chicken in a can again! I'm getting flashbacks of Stuart Ashen pouring one of those out.
I also think he actually cooked an expired one with Barry Lewis and tasted it. Just about the only time I get uneasy from sights alone is when Ashens has some expired food to try out.

Those actual burgers look pretty beat up. The food you buy does not look anywhere as pretty as the ads, but the ones pictured look like they were crushed under a bag full of them or the bag was abused. The tacos are sad, but that's because the prep workers are forced to do it fast and might even have a boss telling them they use too much ingredients. It's just scoop and go, scoop and go.

But it is quite common to see a massive difference in the ads and real life. Most everything is coated with shellac right after preparing to keep the hot studio lights from drying out and wilting the subject. Ice cream is actually mashed potatoes with the right coloring. Burger patties are never fully cooked, only on the visible side, and puffed up to look bigger, and the very best looking buns and veggies are picked. Cereal pictures use wet glue, not milk, to make it look richer and to keep the cereal from sogging up as fast. There are plenty of tricks in the food photography trade, and plenty videos and articles are online on what those tricks are.

Besides good looking ads, the other way they get you hooked on the easy, cheap food is using three things: Fat, Salt, and Sugar. Load up your dish with 1 or 2 of those cheap ingredients and profit city becomes your home town. (Using wood pulp as filler in grain foods and fake fruits in baked goods helps.) But, that's for another thread.

I don't have anything meaningful to contribute. I just wanted to express my surprise that hamburgers in a fucking can is an actual thing. I've never seen or heard of such a thing before. Maybe we are too busy cooking 'em on barbies here in Australia to can them, or something.

Dear god, I can practically taste the Salmonella from that canned chicken picture.
...

I'm pretty sure there is salmonella in any dead chicken. That's why you cook it. To kill the bacteria.

That still looks gross though.

The sausages...

Were they 20 years out of date? I think they were.

Oh, it is a thing all right:

He also made a video on "Chicken in a Can"

I will not link that because it's completely impossible to watch it without being sick.

They got a "with bread" version to. Looks dandy and all.

Until you open it.

Oh yeah, it wasn't the chicken. It was 12 year old hot dogs. I just found the video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx0obvzqh0Q], again. (Click at your own risk, unassuming readers!) That was the one video where I was literally gagging just from the thought of what was going to happen.

I was okay until I saw the fish mouths in a can: that was both utterly revolting and horrifying at the same time.

That said, I feel like it's worth noting that taco bell seems to get their food to at least somewhat resemble the pictures. Same with KFC, I think.

God, I'm totally feeling nauseous now.

I've been told that the images restaurants use for their menus (not just fast food) are actually doctored up with a ton of glue and filling. As in, they could make it look that way, but it would be completely non-edible.

There was a Youtube video of a guy going to various fast food restaurants and when he got his food, he'd go back and ask them to remake it so that it would look like the picture in the ad. A surprising number of them did just that. Of course, a surprising number to me is anything greater than zero, so take that with a grain of salt.

Seeing those two paper thin Jack In The Box tacos made me laugh really hard for like five straight minutes and I have no idea why. Luckily the rare times I have gone out to eat the food I have gotten has looked pretty close to the advertised version.

Reading the opening post I reminded of this video.
