Has there ever been a song or piece of music in a game that you really loved, even though...and perhaps in spite of...the game itself being not very good, that really gave that game a solid place in your heart? Not necessarily what you would consider the best song or the best game ever in history, but just something that gave a game something a little bit extra that made it really special or significant to you?

My most recent example would probably be Still Alive from Mirror's Edge. I know it was never really on the game as it was in youtube...as is posted here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzmUde_EK5Y&feature=fvst

But I, at least, really love this song and every time I hear it I have a feverish desire to play the game, just so I can listen to it over and over again as I'm leaping from roof to roof and doing all the insane crap you do in that game.

It gives me a weird, vicarious sense of freedom.
It makes me feel light and just want to go running and not give a damn about what may come, and every time I hear it...video or not. I can't help but think about that game.
Anyone else have similar songs, and if so, what makes it so special for you?

Edit: Corrected minor spelling issues and typo's.

I enjoyed the music in Halo ODST, during the night solo parts. It set the mood very well.

While the game with the song is excellent, the song still helped put the game on an entire new level

Another one would be this little number from Afro Samurai:

Not only did it make the boss battle it was featured in one of the best I've ever played, but it could be re-used in another game!

That game being Just Cause 2.

For anyone needing some new kind of fun in JC2, simply take a helicopter as far up into the sky as possible, then jump out and play this song.

More entertainment can be had if you then try to catch the helicopter again.

Mass Effect 2 - The End Run. Perfect piece for a brilliant game. Jack Wall ^_^

Also, Still Alive from Portal needs a mention. Brilliant.

The credits made the game for me, so I bought it. :) I'm only just playing it for the first time.

Love that song and it is in the game with the lyrics - it comes on when you save your sister at the end

Got a couple but only a few spring to mind at the moment

This one's pretty memorable for me along with the cosmo canyon and motorbike chase song

Halo obviously since it's theme song is epic beyond words.
As for recent I would say the song Far Away in Red Dead Redemption when you enter Mexico. That song was perfect for that part. It made the trip across Mexico so immersible

In Half-Life 2: Episode Two, there's a piece of music that plays during the final, epic encounter. It completely sets the mood, and with all the gunfire around you, it's just an amazing moment.

Actually, the whole series' use of music is very good. It's not used very often, but when they break it out, it makes for a great effect.

To Zanarkand from Final Fantasy X.

Hopefully I got in before Marter this time.
I was considering mentioning this, but I sorta liked FFX so that isnt the best of choices for me. What's i'd rather bring up instead is the Shinra theme from FFVII. Because no matter what, even if that game is drowning in all the fanboy madness that surrounds it, that theme was awesome. Period.

That's easy:

I'm not even a huge fan of the game, but damn that song is memorable and just sets the scene so perfectly.

Anyone, and I mean *anyone* who's played Diablo at any point in their lives, even if it was ten years ago before that bad accident that left them with amnesia, this is the one thing they'll remember. Family? Friends? Childhood? Gone.

Diablo Tristram theme? Impossible to forget.

Considering i finished it recently, the music throughout Red Dead Redemption was abso-bloody-loutley amazing. The ambient music was fantasticly done and varied from region to region, giving each part of the map a truly local feel. Then there was the use of more conventional music that set the mood so well (entering Mexico, anyone?)

Ill also put in Fallout 3. The ambient music was beatufily sparse and bleak, which really fitted the setting and overall vibe of the game. The source music from the radio stations was also artfully chosen. You never knew you were a fan of 50s easy listening till you played Fallout 3.

Just remembered a really good one - boss fight music for the t-rex in the first tomb raider game. Music kicks in and a t-rex comes out of nowhere. The second you hear that song start you know something is really wrong - scared the crap out of me first time when I was a kid.

Shame this video makes the t-rex look like a walkover

EDIT: the full song is around 40 seconds so only half is played here - liked this clip cause it shows how suddenly rexy appears
