The Sonic fanbase is "Special"

Alright so I've spent the bulk of my free time in the past couple days playing Sonic 4 Episode 1. Quite frankly I think it's pretty damn awesome. The levels are great throwbacks and add a bunch of new elements. By that I mean it's sort of like NSMBW or Galaxy where each world has it's own quirk. You can call these gimmicks but i'd much rather have a unique gimmick for each level than if they were all exactly the same.

I could go on complimenting the game for a while but I just want to discuss this games fanbase.

Do they all have severe brain damage? The complaints people are throwing out there are pretty absurd.

*Sonics legs are too long <- can't believe that's a complaint

*Homing Attach <- If anything it just making killing enemies less of a hassle and allows the game to play faster due to being able to aim at bouncers and the like.

*Physics <- I guess you can complain, but seriously play through the whole game. The only time I ever felt frustrated was when I had to jump across a bunch of cards that were flipping. Would of been just as annoying on the genesis with its physics.

*Difficulty <- I think it was gamespot that said the game was too difficult and they had to keep going back to a particular level to stock up on lives. Have they ever played an old Sonic game? They were pretty unforgiving. Only the last boss world deserves credit for being difficult but that's the last boss.

*Price <- This is valid but for me it's been totally worth it. The original games on the genesis were priced normally and they were among the best sellers. Hell NSMBW is 68$CAD w/ taxes in stores.

I could go on for a while or you can browse just about any Sonic 4 related forum thread and find heaps.

By no means is the game perfect but as a throwback to the old games? I think Sega did a mighty fine job and i'm looking forward to more episodes. There is absolutely no pleasing the Sonic Fanbase.

Anyways have you guys tried out the game? What were your thoughts and reactions?

Without playing Sonic or even being a fan of the game, a lot of people form a positive or negative opinion on a game based on something and bolster that position with a lot of other reasons that may not be as good. It helps create an entirely negative environment about the subject and gives their opinion more validity.

But seriously, the legs?

my only complaint is the price.

1200 MS points is too much, considering that's almost 20 dollars here in canada.

I'm absolutely amazed by the demo though

The fact that I'm actually playing a GOOD sonic game, a sonic game that FEELS like a sonic game, after 16 years of absolute garbage. It's really a revelation - like, what the fuck was sonic team thinking? They had THIS gameplay, just sitting there in their back catalog, and they did EVERYTHING to it, and just failed so miserably every single time.

The Homing Attack is great. It allows you to maintain momentum on a 90 degree turn.. That alone makes it well worth the added confusion of using it incorrectly.

Sonic controls much worse at slow velocities then he used to (and he used to control like a fat kid), but that just makes the game BETTER because it rewards you for playing it well - sonic WANTS you to play it fast, learning the best path through the level, and memorizing the hazards so that you can zoom along, stopping only when the level requires you to stand still for a moment.

Seriously though, I think some people just need to complain about anything they find wrong.

Aside from Sonic's legs being too long, most of these complaints are understandable and are considerably less "special" than the 4chan method of disliking a game which has unfortunately infected a good percentage of nearly every video game board I've found - hating it because "it's shit".

I played the demo, and was surprised at how closely it stayed true to the originals. It felt the same, except for the inclusion of the homing attack, which honestly I LOVE.

I can't afford the full game so I picked up the demo. I don't know, something about it just seems off somewhat at times. It feels kind of slow for me but maybe it's just the demo? I don't mind the homing attack, I actually kind of liked it. The level was nice too but the controls felt a little slowed and muddy for me but I guess I'm just used to a loose control scheme. If anything I do have one thing that just feels awkward to me. It's 32 bit graphics right? Why is all the music in 16 bit format? I know they're trying to keep true to the older format but I'd rather it be up there with the graphics.

I'll probably buy the full thing because though the controls are a bit mucky I can get used to that and it's NOT "Sonic Next Gen"... Thank god I never bought that game.

Most of the complaints I've read seem to revolve around the gameplay not "feeling" like the original titles for one reason or another. I guess I can see that in some respects, but I just can't consider it a dealbreaker.

I think some people get so hyped up on nostalgia and have wanted an experience exactly like they had playing the Sonic games for so long that they can't step back and realize, "Hey. That was 16 years ago. I bet some things are going to change based simply on technology alone and the fact I'm not a kid anymore."

Well I bought the full thing first chance I got, price is a lil on the high side considering it's just episode 1 but it's not too high to be worth it.
The gameplay is a lil slower than the originals, especially when you move from standing still, but it's not a deal breaker. The rest of the game is as much sonic as anyone could possibly want.

Of course that's just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions :p

I consider myself a fan, but think you imagine all fans are like the ones you hear from. Douchebags make sure they're heard and drown out the rest of us, ok? I agree with you on your points.

So, the game looks pretty fun and all, but what was that music? Good grief! Sonic had pretty good game music before! Still, hopefully they can figure out how to do soundtracks again now they've figured out how to do gameplay again. Here's hoping, anyway.

I loved the Genesis games and the Sega CD version. Dreamcast ones were mixed bag (loved Sonic and Shadow levels...rest not so much) the GBA ones were great (DS ones were okay) and Unleashed was the worst Sonic I've played.

It's fun to me came from the idea that beating it wasn't the challenge. It was getting the time down, finding that perfect line to connect and maintain that sense of speed. That is why 2D works better or if you do 3D keep it on rails otherwise camera and controls destroy the whole experience.

Oh, and I really don't need a story or cutscenes. I'm Sonic, I run to the end, all I need.
