Guys, you have to play it. And I can't really describe why, because there is no valid comparison! That game is nothing, NOTHING like I've ever played before. I mean... WOW!
Ok, if you won't take my word, take Jim's. http://www.destructoid.com/review-the-stanley-parable-263731.phtml take it and go play that game!

I'm planning on picking it up this weekend, if not tomorrow. The only reason I haven't picked it up already is because I haven't really had any time to play it today. I loved the original mod, and I've been looking forward to this release for quite some time now. And after reading a couple of reviews (holy shit Jim Sterling gave it a 10/10), I've been even more excited to play it.

I don't have the money to spend on it, but I kind of want to play it before it gets spoiled for me.

Though considering how much I disliked Spec Ops: The Line, Journey, and Dear Esther I'm really thinking all these artistic games, or games "about games" simply aren't for me.

edit: saw a few people posting they regret paying even $12 for the game, and that is' more like a $3.99 game to them considering the original mod is nearly identical and free.

I intend to buy it soon.

From what I've seen it's a kind of parody and commentary with a narrator who says funny stuff in a soothing voice about whatever you do.

You should try the mod and then the demo for this version.

I can say that the new version is not really "nearly identical" though.

I tried the demo just now, it was alright.
It really does make me wonder why everyone is gushing over this game though, because if I spent money on a 5 hour experience similar to the demo I'd feel really ripped off.

...is it a creepy horror game? I'm always worried something is going to scare the shit out of me with these niche games.

No, not really. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's just downright dark and sinister. But not scary, no.

It's fucking fantastic. I loved the first iteration, and this one is just bigger, better and all around gob-smacking amazing.

Some of the cleverest and funniest writing I've ever witnessed. If you like things such as Hitchhiker's Guide you'll adore this.

It also doesn't fall into the trap of an 'art game' and the subsequent judgements from that. Well worth the money you spend on it.

Eh not for me. I don't care for these "artistic" games and the like that attempt to subvert the medium. I'd rather just play a game that is actually fun.

I remember seeing the Yogcast play this a long while back. IS this like a full release or something, or is it just now getting its 15 mins in the limelight? cause fromw hat I saw of it being played, yeah its alright, but not really like earthshattering or anyhting.

Yea no. There is a very long list of things I would consider spending $12 on before a game with no actual gameplay. If this is the posterboy for the whole "gamez are art" thing I think I'm perfectly content with games not being art.

I think this implies that the game is not entertaining. It is extremely entertaining, just not in the same way games usually are.

Well I think it's great to see the medium is taking steps in new directions. While I wouldn't say the game is artsy, it certainly does a lot of subverting and lampshading at the expense of itself and a lot of other video games. It's very entertaining, and if you liked the demo, you'll probably enjoy finding a bunch of the endings in the full game.

I'll throw my 2 cents in that if you have any interest or care for games in the slightest, play this.

It isn't about art, it's about choice and the expectations experienced gamers have for the possibilities and consequences of such choice.

And even though there may not be gameplay in the traditional sense, it's still funny as all hell.

Broom closet. That is all you need to know.

If you're still not sold, at least play through the free Source mod a few times.

There's nothing horrific in the traditional sense of a big monster jumping out at a random point, but the game is incredibly disturbing at times even without scary imagery.

Thanks for the reminder.

I have been aware of the mod version for a while, but eagerly anticipating the proper release. And now... IT IS MINE!

The game is massively fun. It's not an "art game" in the style of Dear Esther, although it is a game-sized critique on the entirety of video gaming. An insightful and funny one at that.
