WoW players are stereotyped just as anyone is stereotyped these days. Jocks are stereotyped as bullies, Gamers are stereotyped as being violent, Christians are stereotyped as being crazy.

I wouldn't think to much of being stereotyped. Just remember that the people who stereotype have no idea what they are talking about.

I played it off and on (more on then off) for about 2 and a half years, grew tired of it and finally kicked the wow bucket.

I think a combination, people dying on WoW because they have been playing it for too long

Mmorpgs require a lot of patience over the more mainstream fps of sports game which are based on insant gratification which ost people don't have the time and patience to appriciate

It's based of a fantasy era, I like the fantasy style but it is still quite nerdy

It's still a video game and some people think all video games are sad

£10 a month is pretty damn expensive if you have been playing it for like 2-3 years
10*12= 120
120*3= £360 which is about $585 which is $585 dollars you could have spent on booze, some days out, food, electricity or whatever

If I spend 23 hours over the perod of a week which is the average play time, thats 23 hours I could have spent, playing with my dogs, praciticing my guitar, seeing my friends/GF and just ingenerally getting better at tangable things.

(see http://psychcentral.com/news/2007/08/22/1-in-3-world-of-warcraft-players-attracted-to-one-another)

While I do know that it can sociable and fun, it's just a game and well I have just stated how much time and money can go into it.
Just my 2 cents thats all

It takes a huuuuuge time commitment, even by videogame standards. With my friend it got to the point where he was saying "Sorry man, I can't go to that party and get hammered and laid, I've got a raid in WoW." It's stuff like that that probably feeds the stereotype.

I don't know any WoW players, so I can't comment on that. All I know is that I played the free trail, and I hated it.

WoW bored me silly, no non-consensual pvp, no death penalties just happy carebear time.

But I'm not free from the evils of MMOs.

I've currently resubbed to EVE-Online, I'm addicted to the adrenaline rush that game gives.

Ok, I get your point, but I do have friends, they just think that MMOs have that effect on people.
Every stereotype exists because there was/is a grain of truth in it at somepoint. The same goes for any MMO player. WoW gets the most heat because the "best" (and i use that term loosely) players are the oft talked about uber nerds.

I'm sooooo nerdy I refused to play WoW cuz it was too much of a bastardization of my childhood

same reason I've only played Warcraft 3 for like 5 minutes
