My dad had a nightmare once.

He was in a desert and suddenly a huge, slimy monster burst through the ground in front of him.

With it's big, rancid, slimy hands it grabbed him by the shoulder, opened it's gaping mouth and said: "Honey, wake up. It's 8 o'clock!"

True story.

i used to have lots of nightmares as a child. I still have weird dreams but they don't bother me. about a month ago in a dream my arm exploded, but instead of freaking out I was sarchastic "oh well thats just great!"...in real life i think i would be a bit more surprised...

Once as a child (around 4 or 5) i dreamt I was given human-sized ice cream and it controlled my life not letting me watch tv or do colouring. it kept making me eat those wafer things. i tried running away but it kept catching me.

My brother had and ice cream too but he was friends with his and they got on great...

I have a recurring one where I am with scientists in a lab, and we are testing on this dog. And it is BIG. It looks at me, and smashes the glass, killing three scientists right there. I turn and run down the hall, someone runs into me and I fall over. I look behind and the thing jumps on me and bites my arm. I usually wake up, but sometimes it keeps going and I always try to claw it off. When I wake up, I am bleeding profusely from clawing at my own arm.

Since Lucid dreaming though, I have first managed to escape, and once even, kill the beast.

The last few I remember involved my Lab instructor, who for some reason always makes me afraid I'll really screw up when trying to help him.

my worst nightmare consisted of me meeting a great, nice, beautiful chick and sleeping with her. then having my father show up and tell me she's my half-sister.

only time I ever woke up screaming.

Now everything is pretty vague until I open a door and I am up to the thighs in water in what seems to be a library. This lead to one of my logic switches being tripped (Why would you allow almost waist high water in a library?) and from there on I remember it all pretty clearly. My new problem is I can't control the dreams when I "wake up" inside them, I'm stuck till the logical conclusion (usually dead me).
I use to have that same problem. I'm stuck in a dream, knowing it's a dream, yet unable to manipulate anything about it. However, I've gone through a couple times in dreams where I have to tell myself that my eyes are closed and to open them to escape the nightmare. So I think I've unconsciously build an instant-out in order to wake up - since the dreams that typically trapped me were nightmares. So whenever I realize that I'm dreaming I'm immediately woken up when one of my warning flags are tripped, typically in logic form.

I now can escape nightmares and reset my sleep so I can actually get some rest, but I've traded out the ability to ever be a lucid dreamer and manipulate my own dreams... of course controlling my dreams always backfired too, so I'm not mourning that loss.

I read about lucid dreaming once as a kid. (I have ALWAYS been interested in psychology.) So, ever since I can remember, I have been able to control my dreams. The earliest one I can remember is dinosaurs had been discovered alive on some remote island, and some dumb ass scientists brought some eggs back, T-Rex eggs (which at the time, was the largest known carnivore), they hatched, naturally, and began eating everyone. So, I, being amazing, used a special harness with a laser beam attached to domesticate one and saved the human race (and this is way before Drawn Together, Family Guy, Jurassic Park, Austin Powers, or anything else with this in it. Yeah, my mind is just this awesome). The one I had last night involved a gang involved in sex trafficking and me gathering a vigilante band to hunt them down. I beat the second-in-command into a coma with my bare hands, and my old man shot the ring leader through the chest with a shotgun as he stalked up behind me while I was fighting with his lieutenant.

My dreams usually start off scary, but then I manipulate them to make them awesome.

I don't have nightmares - not that my sub-concious doesn't try, I just don't get scared while sleeping. Had my legs hacked off while discussing philosophy with the kid that was hacking etc, I just wake up thinking 'that was cool'. Now, if that means I'm wired wrong for not getting freaked; that I don't know.
Nah, I'm the same thing. I remember I once had a dream where I was sword fighting with this...thing, it looked like a bald guy, but it was insanely fast, strong, and it never took any kind of damage or injury. No matter where I stabbed, cut, beat, it'd just keep going. I, on the other hand, felt everything. Looked pretty damn real too. Ended up with me jumping out of 3rd floor window to escape... Woke up thinking it was pretty cool though.

I've only had one nightmare in forever... same recurring one, and, ironically, it's quite simple and "tame" compared to that kind of stuff. Yet it's the only one that scares me: I can't find one person. They were with me one second, then they're going somewhere, or I turn around for half a second, or I just take my eyes of them for one second... And that person disappears.

This is kind of a wall of text, so bear with me here.

The most frightening dream I've ever had was a dream where I was named Bob, and I opened up a barbershop called Bob's Barbershop, which was coincidentally located right next to another barbershop called Bob's Barbershop, which was run by another man named Bob.
To make a long story short, I was sapping all of Other Bob's business, so he decided to kill me and my business partner Jim. Strangely enough, through making the decision to kill me, he turned into a Sith, lightsaber and all. And to add to Other Bob's list of awesome skills, he also had the ability to control all technology, and had used this power to convince the mass media that Jim and I were threats to America's freedom.
Even with everybody, their dog, their grandma, and their grandma's dog, Jim and I somehow were able to safely sneak back to our apartment. However, when I was putting my stuff back into my locker, (which I stored my possessions in for some reason,) Other Bob jumped out and pinned me against the wall. He raised his lightsaber into the sky, and -
That's when I woke up.

All my nightmares involve being perched atop some high structure being blown about by the wind, eventually I fall off and I fall for what seems like hours, then SPLAT, I wake up and my whole body aches. Also I have terrible nightmares where I'm strapped down to something, and I'm in the pitch dark and I just know something is waiting to do me harm, I always wake up before such point but they are still terrifying.
It might not be a dream. You could actually be experiencig sleep paralysis where your concious part has woken up but the rest of you is still, in essence, asleep. It's more complicated and I don't fully get the whole process myself beyond it involving the tempoparietal lobe and your abillity to interpret sensory data getting knotted up so you start hallucinating and such. It's meant to be pretty fucking horrifying I'm told.
That is more terrifying then the nightmares, to have it actually happen makes the nightmares sound less scary.

Back in the time when i still had nightmares, last one should be about 12 years ago, one interesting reocurring motive was sunfishs. Mostly , strange enough, in a river i fell in.
They dont do nothing and are afaik totally harmless. But they scare the shit out of me. Huge freaks of the oceans

I'm...not in great condition mentally, and one thing I have an awful lot of is lucid nightmares, the sort where you physically feel everything that happens.

One it got really weird; I was next to something, I can't quite remember, but it exploded. I had some sort of spasm, flew sideways out of bed, and hurt like hell, like I was burnt. Nasty stuff.

As for the scariest, I don't really want to bring that back.

My only recurring nightmare right now is that I get laid off, my gf dumps me, and I am suddenly ineligible to return to school for X reason, when those are the only things that I wake up for.
