Two thousand years ago Mount Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii. Today, a larger, far more deadly supervolcano lurks on the other side of Naples. If it erupts, Campi Flegrei could wipe out all life in Europe.

I believe I heard that Old Faithful (or a geyser similar to Old Faithful) is a super volcano quite similar to that.

Like I said it was a joke, I probably wouldn't move to Europe anyway, though visiting would be nice. Let's face it pretty much every landmass is doomed.

As a person who lives in Europe, I am thoroughly unworried. An asteroid could hit the planet, the cockroaches could murder us in our sleep, worrying about them isn't going to stop them, and it's a remote possibility so there are a lot more productive things to worry about.

According to the Mail, everything can and will kill us.

Oh dear. I love how it's the Daily Mail that get's hold of these kind of stories. Speaking as a geology student (with a keen interest in volcanoes) yeah, it could be a problem, but so are the other volcanoes and 'supervolcanoes' in the world (dear me, I just love how they use the discription of a caldera formation senonomously with the formation of a super volcano in that article).

Should we be worried, probably, but not enough that people won't live in Naples. It doesn't stop people living in San Francisco or Istambul even though both those cities are due massive, potentually city distroying earthquakes. We've just gotta get on with it, our planet is a violent place but all we can do is study it and learn more so we're ready if something does happen.

(Also, PS, there are different kinds of volcanoes, not all are explosive and destructive, I wish this was more common knowledge so people don't go around thinking that is Hawaii goes up somehow we're all doomed... (It's won't like that and we're not)).

the entirety of Yellowstone National Park is the cauldron of a supervolcano.

however, to the topic at hand: who gives a rip? worrying about shit like this is as productive as worrying about comets, alien invasions, or some genetically engineered supervirus. if it happens, there's really nothing we can do to stop it, so why the hell would we waste our lives worrying about it? people who freak out about the Flavor of the Weak scare (see what i did there?) piss me off to no end. (not saying that the OP is one of those people... just sayin'...)
