The term "butthurt" seems wrong. Research seems to confirm.

Butthurt basically means "You tried/did something stupid, and now you are unreasonably upset because you didn't consider the consequences". Much like anyone whose has ever tried unprepared anal sex finds out it hurts, or for a more pleasant example, how a child gets spanked for misbehaving. To use in a video game context, you could say "You knew I'd uppercut every time you jumped at me, but you kept doing it anyway. Stop being so butthurt".

As far as I know, I don't think anyone uses the term in a "lol rape" sort of way.

then i suppose saying "rape" and teabagging people in games is not apropriate. Would have never figured that out...

Just saying, but you can get butthurt from consensual "activities".

On another news, "sand in your vagina" is offensive to beach nudists.

What I always found the most likely story behind the word 'butthurt', is a dumb-assed kid throwing a tantrum and screaming, then getting spanked as a result. Then they're bitching to friends about the matter, unable to sit.

Being raped never entered my mind on the matter.

It could reference plenty of things other than rape. Having your arse kicked, taking an aggravating shit and being moody about it, being ridiculously anal about something, etc.

To be honest, even if it does pertain to rape, these sorts of things are thrown about so much on the internet that they lose all potency and no one really uses them for the purpose of offending in the original sense.

There's a similar situation around '****' and 'twat'. Apparently these are sexist insults because they're technically slang for vaginas; I think most people just call them insults.

Oh, wait, reading your OP again you seem to think that people who use it are typically aiming to insult rape victims? Well, no.

It's the same basic sentiment as "be a man about it" / "don't be a fag" etc.

Like a lot of anti-gay / anti-woman swear words, it's easy to blame misogyny and male-dominance, but a study of world cultures shows that it probably has more to do with prude puritanical / victorian cultures general association of sex as dirty.

Those phrases are terrible and I have an incredibly low opinion of people who use them.
I think I read about the "rape meaning" somewhere. Again, I can't remember where, I think KnowYourMeme was one of them.

It would appear more of a "yeah you bite that pillow you fuckwad" sort of thing.

Though it doesn't have to be a rape or pillow biter shaming sort of insult, it's still a douchey sort of thing to do, personally, and I don't think highly of it. It doesn't even need to have an offensive meaning. It's just a douchey thing to do.

Of course! American english is full of anti-woman/anti-gay slurs that we should get rid of. I did some research on it, and was surprised to learn that it might have more to do with puritanical / victorian Christian attitudes towards sex, than just coming from patriarchy and misogyny. This is based on cultures that are very male-centric but don't have Christian hang-ups about sex, for example in some islamic cultures the swear words are mostly about unclean animals instead of sex.

I always figure it was like, stop whining about the logical outcome of your actions, like a child whining about their butt hurting after getting spanked for doing something wrong. I suppose there's always other interpretations, and I wouldn't be surprised to find the internet latching onto the most offensive one.

A rape joke? That's the first I've heard of that. I always thought that if anything it was a homophobic term. People on the internet tend to be quite homophobic, considering how liberally the word '******' is thrown around.

Yes, it is offensive. It's also used by the same immature racist, sexist, insensitive pricks that populate the dark places of the internet and think "raped" is an appropriate term for severely defeated, "retarded" is an appropriate term for something you think is dumb, and that use the term "killed" for defeating any enemy in any way in any game. The internet is a cesspool.

How on earth is it a rape joke? It's used when people get all pissy over something trivial or can't take a joke.

If you honestly think 'butthurt' is a jab at rape victims, then we haven't anything else to discuss. Well, we do. Stop reading so far into things. It just means something along the lines of someone being so annoyed/angry that their butt hurts. There's no rape involved in someone verbally annoying someone.
Seriously, you people can't keep searching for offense in every single word that comes out of the internet and pop culture. By this logic you should change your username because it's offensive to sex slaves.

I tip my hat to you good sir. That was quite rollicking.

Agreed on wondering how the OP came by the rape idea but I'm really enjoying seeing all the different ideas around the origin coming up.

Also "Stick up your butt" could be offensive to puppets.

I verily hope this isn't sarcasm.
It's sincere. Literally just the other day I was thinking about all the swears and insults based on oral sex, that make no sense. When a straight guy calls another straight guy a "****sucker" as if it's some kind of terrible insult, what does that imply about his thoughts towards, not only homosexual men, but also women in general and his own girlfriend?
