Quick question: Who here has experienced The Tetris Effect [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_effect] at one time or another?

Absolutely I have. I didn't even know there was a term for it. From a psychological perspective, it's pretty interesting stuff.

Wow, thanks for that. I've definitely experienced it, I just thought maybe I was messed up or something. Since it's defined on Wikipedia, it means I'm normal.

I get this if I play too much guitar hero, spend too long thinking about my crush or do a lot of calculus. I had no idea there was a real phrase for it though!

Everytime I close my eyes I see pictures of things that left an impression on me. This can be study books (Normal books don't last long enough), games, movies but also real life events. So you could say I have the tetris effect on a daily basis.

My mom is very organized and when traveling the amount of stuff she can fit into a suitcase is astonishing. I only recently made the connection that she spent a great deal of time playing Tetris and Dr. Mario.

Quick question, how hard can calculus get? I can do integration by parts, use the substition methode, calculate the flux through a surface, calculate some series, and switch from coordinate system. Is there much more then that

I don't think anyone hasn't. If the phenomenon is as it is explained then the world over has had it happen to them.

Oh, you've not even got to integration by magic yet!

Don't worry, the only other things are differential equations, apart from that it just tends to apply the same methods to increasingly difficult problems.

Actually scrap that, there's also differential geometry and topology which are REALLY difficult, but they only really come up in very specialised fields. Which I managed to get myself into. Because they will pay well. If I can be any good at them.

Yes, this has definetly happened to me. Not to worry though, as obsession only becomes an issue when you begin dreaming about your habit/thoughts/whatever.

Wait... crap.

Oh god I get this when I can't sleep really late at night and have been playing Halo or Cod or other repetitive multiplayer games (no flaming intended).

The other night it was 4am and I had watched "The Thing" and all I could fucking think about was a million different situations where I was in that movie, so I was suspicious about everyone, logically trying to determine who was infected, trying to think how best to isolate and infect everyone and desperately trying to defend myself ALL. AT. THE. SAME. TIME.
It was hell. So glad when that night finished.

...I see the world in wireframe. I usually look around and see how things can be constructed in polys.

It's a bit strange, but kinda cool at the same time. I don't dream about it...but still.

There's a reason that people think this game is a Soviet mind-control device.

I've had it with galcon fusion. We refer to it as "seeing triangles".

I know I've been thinking about where you could have cool Portal-trick possibilities in the real world. So I guess I ~am~ thinking with portals.

I used to get it really bad with WoW. I've come to the conclusion that if it is the norm for you, you should slow down.

Yup, several times actually. Happens every time I spend too much time playing the same game. I spend the rest of the day thinking about scenarios in the game, keep the songs in my mind, I even go through daily activities applying the same restrictions the game has.

.... which is why I try not to play too much. It really gets weird after a while...

I have, but I had eaten this little piece of paper so it wasn't a legit experience. I mean I also saw a bunch of little goblins dancing in the oven and the pots and pans turn into pinwheels and I don't think that had anything to do with playing video games.
