While a notebook is just a little less underpowered, but is substantially less portable and useful :p

If you can only have one computer, then I think a $1500-$2000 notebook would be the best choice for most people.

But if you can have two, I would pick a $500 netbook and a $1000-$1500 self-built desktop computer. That way, you can have the best of both worlds.
It depends on what you're using it for.

The laptop I'm getting (XPS m1530 by Dell) is essentially a gaming laptop, which is what I'll be using it for, but I'm also going to uni next year, so I'll be using it for that too. If you want a laptop suited for you, custom make one. None of this Netbook nonsense.
God, please don't get a Dell, save yourself. If you have to get something relatively cheap, get a Gateway. Not a Dell.
Is this a joke? I used to work for both. Buy a Gateway and prepare for long waits on the phone to tech support, cause you will be on the phone to tech support, that fact is inevitable. When I left tech agents had a revenue per call of $10, fix the issue or sell the solution (even if it's wrong) most will go for the sale and get the hell off the phone. Dell at least cares about the customer about as much as any corporation can. Gateway only cares about the almighty $, all their parts are contracted out to the lowest bidder no matter the reputation of the manufacturer. Damn who the hell would recommend a Gateway?!?!?! You hate this guy or something?
Okay, okay. Fair enough. Get an HP then.

So what Alienware model is it?

Wait , so you already have a desktop , that you can upgrade to play all of today's and next years games with only about 500-700 dollars , but instead you insist on spending 3 thousand on an alienware . There's something I'm missing here .

Do you come from a VERY wealthy family ? That would explain everything .

So , how much does your mom make a year ?

I could NEVER see my dad spending 3 thousand dollars on a laptop for me , thought he would probably insist on getting one in the $1000-$1200 dollar range .

Yeah , it kinda obvious now that you come from huge money .

My dad would never buy a Honda though , considering he works for Ford .

If you aren't going to be in a top 25 school, I'm going to laugh so hard.

And why do kids who aren't in college seriously think they'll take their gigantic 16" laptop all around campus?
Because I can and have no problem doing so. You said you were in college, what college are you in.

You've no idea.

So you're in a top 25 college and you're taking your 16" laptop everywhere you go? To the dining hall? To all of your classes? To the library/wherever else?

well call me lazy but my gaming laptop was one of the best purchases I ever made. I own a dell inspiron 9300 which has a 17 inch screen a 1.86 Pentium m a 6800 go and 2 gigs of ram which cost about $2700 now admittedly it is not all that impressive now a days but when I purchased it in 2005 it was a pretty sweet little(well not so little)machine. and it still functions just fine in fact the only issue I ever had with it was the power brick went out on me and dell over nighted me a new one for free. It also still plays all the games we lan just fine up to call of duty 4 and supreme commander and yes it does not run highest settings but it plays it very competently. Also call me weird but the less then five minute pack up to and from a lan was a good enough reason for the purchase for me and I have never regretted it. So in short I have zero issue with dell and I would buy a gaming oriented laptop again. Though I have zero issues with netbooks my roommate has one and its a spiffy little machine.

I'd always go notebook over netbook, because I can't type for shit on those small 8ish inch things. Which kind of makes them useless for anything except basic internet use.

A decent notebook at around 14inch is perfectly portable, can do anything you want and quite a few are powerful enough to run most games. My 3 year old notebook still runs the current games (not at their highest setting of course, but still very much playable and good looking).

Will you also be spending $3000 of your parents' money just to know the touch of a woman? :p
That was very rude and uncalled for. But no, no I won't. I'm very popular with the ladies.
