I miss old school shooters, Splitters was the last of a generation. Oh well, give it a few years and they'll come back around as everyone gets bored of 'realistic' drama queen shooters.

I heard Perfect Dark does something similar.
It does, so does Goldeneye, both games being made by the guys who set up Free Radical to make TimeSplitters.

I also think it deserves a mention that TimeSplitters was the PS2 generations golden eye in terms of multiplayer it was the first and only disk that entered my console when mates were around for a night.

Local multiplayer is yet another thing modern games have mistakenly left behind and increasingly ignore....

Still i agree that Splitters is probably best left as a nostalgic benchmark of how we think things should be done rather then a certain disappointment of how to ruin a once great ip. See also Max Payne.

Yeah the map maker was awesome, how cool would a sequel be with a brand new map maker, outdoors capabilities and everything, the bots were awesome to.

TimeSplitters 2 is still my favorite FPS of all time. The difficulty advancement was genius, the custom matches were fun, and you simply couldn't beat the characters. I mean, really, how can you beat a deathmatch where you're playing against a gingerbread man, a zombie monkey, a giant duck and a snowman on a flying carpet?

In an age of generic, 'realistic' FPS shooters and whatnot, I can't help but think of my favourite which was the Timesplitters series. Don't get me wrong though, I love more-or-less every FPS. It's just they're getting a bit repetetive. For those of you who are familiar with the series; enjoy the sweet sweet nostalgia.

One of my favourite aspects of Timesplitters was probably the Mapmaker. I found this completely groundbreaking at the time. The game was actually letting me design my own maps! Giving you tilesets which resembled current maps, you could build the different floors, rooms, corridors and fill them with different objectives for different gametypes along with spawns, weapons etc. The best part was, you could create your own missions for the Story Mode.

One thing that needs a good look at in games today is their difficulty settings. In the easiest difficulty, bullets bounce off your character while merely aiming the barrel of a gun at a foe causes them to collapse with shock. However, in the hardest difficulty setting it's the other way around. Not only did Timesplitters do this, but you were given more objectives to complete and had to delve further into the level. Take the first level for example. On the easiest difficulty you must infiltrate a military compound in Siberia, sneak past the guards, head into a cave, steal something and escape. On the hardest difficulty, you must do that, but then sneak through a dam to bring you to the other side of the compound, fight of hoards of zombies and mutants and then ascend to the top of the dam and battle to the death with a helicopter.

Are there any games you can think of that really set an example?
Let's not also forget the original time splitters.

Easy, infiltrate a pyramid, kill some arab guys guarding it, steal the ankh and kill mummies and Time Splitters on the way out.

Medium (above) as well as going deeper INTO the pyramid, dodging and killing tons more arabs and mummies before even finding the ankh, and doing so with 2 health packs in the ENTIRE LEVEL

(never made it over medium too hard)

But Time Splitters really set the example to me of how an FPS should work by the time it got to the second. For one thing it was objectives more complex than "go here and shoot things" it would be point A to point B, get new weapon, hit switch, find key, go through newly opened way to point C, kill off everyone in your path, find the secret passage to point D to get extra ammo, and so on.

Where as all these "realistic" shooters completely forgoe the entire NOTION of secret chambers. What happened to the Doom era when you'd go up against a bit of wall and hit enter and it would open to show, TADAA! a rocket launcher, fresh and toasty and waiting for you like a present on Christmas morning?

I've only played Future Perfect but no other FPS has rivaled it's story. Too bad if the TS4 will be missing a good story. Maybe they could make up a whole new story then we could have TS5 and 6 and 7....:D

Oh, man. TimeSplitters. I have yet to find a more original FPS. Favorite aspect was the characters. No character has yet to surpass any of the ones from just FP alone.

AH, played Doom for the first time in about 12 years three weeks back.
Still remembered most of the secret rooms. If it hadn't been for the glitchy visuals, alcohol and 12 years of other memories squishing doom into a corner, I'd have got that chainsaw on the second level. :(

I only recently bought Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect (plan on buying the first one too) and I love it. The games are so unique and halarious, especially Future Perfect. All the different characters are really fun to collect, and the Mapmaker allows you to create some really cool maps. I'm going to be playing these for a while. I really hope Timesplitters 4 comes out some day.

I just rebought Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect for the Gamecube. As far as I'm concerned, they are the two best console FPS's ever made. I have had more fun with one level on TS2 than I did with the whole Halo and Killzone series, and I think that more games should follow their example. They made a great shooter, added tons of content, and make it really easy to pick up and play. But the icing on the cake that pushed it from great shooter to greatest shooter was the layer of silly humour, constant 4th wall breaking and astounding music.

The music is so bloody good that it's better than what it's parodying.

If you don't like that, you're not a person.
I hope and I pray and I hope some more that Crytek treats TS4 with respect.
Crytek will do it justice. Not...They THRIVE on realism, at least on consoles.

That's what I'm worried about.

I hope that they either let the Free Radical guys call most of the shots and not interfere too much, or at least let whoever came up with the idea that you could kill Koreans by throwing chickens at them in Crysis run the show.
That's why I said "NOT."

They'll fuck it up.
