I'm gonna have to say Minecraft is definitely up there, I don't feel comfortable nominating any other games without playing them first. Lol

1. Which GOTY? Every site or magazine has its own. If it's just "goty" in general then all I can say is "gtfo" since the content of personal goty is always an idiotic shouting match with no real outcome.

2. A game with a lot of publicity that is moderately fun to really fun. Small name games never win and unfun games never win. (course fun is subjective so...)

3. I would give my prediction if I had two fucks to rub together over the issue but sadly I give not a single fuck. I'm not interested in trying to rarefy notions of quality. I'll slit my own neck before I force myself to compress the world into a single number scheme because I have to know what's "the best" as if that was somehow something that can exist. I don't like this pissing contest over games.

Skyrim is probably going to get it just on the pure bases of extreme fan generated hype. I'm going to like it, but It will just be an improved version of Oblivion for me and not really deserving of many GOTY awards
BAHAHAHAH, do you know anything about Skyrim? Calling it an improved version of Oblivion is like calling GTA IV and improved version of the original GPA.
Not much has changed at all, the basic structure is the same, I don't mind that I enjoy the formula. You need to calm down.

Arkham City, >Portal 2, and... probably a shooter; either Battlefield 3 or the Halo remake.

Eh, Arkham City will probably win the most awards. I don't care that much about it, though...I think I still might at least try out Arkham Asylum at some point.

So yea, my three picks so far? Dark Souls, Skyrim, and maybe either Battlefield 3 or The Old Republic...still pretty up in the air. Hell, Guild Wars 2 might come out this year, right? that's another contender. Failing all those, Dawn of War 2: Retribution was pretty damn awesome.

Hell, I ought to take a list of stuff that came out this year again, It's been a pretty long year.

EDIT- Oh shit, forgot about Assassin's Creed. That'll probably be up there, too....time will tell how far up there.

For me they would be Dark Souls, Gears of War 3, and, uh... shit, I just realised that I've only bought 2 games this year. Fuck that, time to go to Gamestop.

I think all games everywhere will declare themselves to be game of the year, especially the green lantern movie-licensed game, if there is one.
Game of the year to go with Movie of the year. Marketers can just die.

Wow Portal 2 was forgotten quickly. I think Portal 2 will give them all a good run for their money :) Then again I'm biased because I've never played Uncharted and hated Oblivion. I can't wait to get my hands on some Arkham City though.

Edit: Ninja'd lol Uh, to make this post have something fresh and new in it... I'll throw out some Zelda: Skyward Sword love. Assassin's Creed Revalations could be good as well.
I don't think Portal 2 would win "Game of the Year" however it SHOULD win any Writing awards. The Writing in the game is TOP NOTCH. Best writing I have ever seen... EVER!

SPace. I want to go to space. SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!

How is that NOT awesome?

What it will be:
1. Skyrim
2. Deus Ex
3. Arkham City
4. Uncharted 3
5. Portal 2
6. Assassin's Creed Revelations

What it should be:
0. Oddworld: Stranger's Wearh
1. Portal 2
2. Skyrim
3. Deus Ex
4. Uncharted 3 (move down one spot if the singleplayer has been cut down in size, and doesn't have anything much different to U2)
5. Arkham City (the word '*****' is used enough to be really grating...)
6. Assassin's Creed Revelations

Speaking seriously (My personal and somewhat objective appraisal):

* Portal 2 was good at launch, but has faded from the public consciousness. It is unlikely to garner the lion's share of GOTYs, but will probably pick up at least one, plus a number of genre/platform/special awards.

* The Witcher 2 is in a similar situation to Portal 2 - what it lacks in universal recognition, it makes up for in fanbase dedication. Expect at most one GOTY (probably none) but a fair number of genre/platform awards.

* Deus Ex will pick up at least one GOTY, as well as a number of miscellaneous awards. It may be a good contender for overall GOTY winner.

* Dark Souls will probably only win platform/genre awards, although some specialist group may give it GOTY for its niche appeal.

* Modern Warfare 3 will not gain GOTY awards unless it is phenomenally better than its predecessors; it's too much "more of the same" at this point to gain special acclaim.

* Batman may well gain several GOTY awards - Arkham Asylum gained a few, and the general consensus is that people like Arkham City more than its predecessor (good will being a surprisingly important factor here!)

* Battlefield 3's fortunes will depend on whether it does anything except try to beat Modern Warfare 3. If it's just a better shooter, it will have trouble obtaining critical acclaim; if it does something truly special, however, it may well have a fighting chance.

* Skyrim is, honestly, a bit of a shoe-in. The massive goodwill built up over the course of Bethesda's published works, combined with the hype surrounding its release and the overall rarity of similar experiences in modern gaming, will practically guarantee this game a favorable reception at the year's-end polls. Unless, of course, it crashes and burns.

EDIT: Forgot Uncharted 3! How could I...

* Uncharted 3 is riding the tide of success built by its predecessor, but I don't see it being able to greatly surpass Uncharted 2's high water mark. Perhaps a few GOTYs, certainly a great number of genre awards, but not the overall winner.

Everything else, I fear, has little more than niche appeal, and thus niche chance at success. For example, while some magazine somewhere might give Saints Row 3 GOTY just for being different, it is more likely to gain genre/special awards.

And that's my thought on the issue. The future releases may, of course, completely change the tide of public opinion - if Battlefield burns or Saints Row 3 is astounding in every respect possible, I may be proven drastically wrong. But based on their current release hype, this is my view on the situation.

Dark Souls is a darkhorse that may steal some awards from Skyrim.
I really doubt that. Not that Dark Souls isn't a good game (I absolutely love it and I think it's probably my favorite of the year) but I think that Skyrim is all around just more popular and hyped by the media than Dark Souls.
NHype and popularity are not quantitative measures of true quality, not to GOTY standard.

Otherwise, the GOTY every year would be Tetris.

The fact that the judging begins before the games are even released is part of the reason why the term GOTY means nothing to me.

So far, Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat 9 are on my list. I just need something to fill that third spot. Serious Sam 3, perhaps?

Either Batman or Skyrim. Batman p0wned and there's so much hype for Skyrim it cannot be ignored.
