On the other side, examples like this show that, even though 4chan may have the same opinion on the topic, they may alienate many supporters by the way they... may I say engage?... the subject. I am sure that especially this Tropes vs Women thing showed many that it is not a smart thing to side with any of the people on 4chan. Ever.
I think the general moral of the story that applies here is that when something like this explodes into public view, it quickly becomes too toxic to even say "well, maybe the offending party had some kind of point about the victim that was lost among the deplorable ways/methods that the offenders acted/used." See also the Jennifer Hepler twitter bombing, or the Sandra Fluke controversy (the latter one is all politics though).

Not that I am neccessarily agreeing or disagreeing with the people who actually disagreed reasonably with all of the above.

Gabe also took some drugs recently and talked about rewarding player who show a positive behaviour. I think he may want to condition the Steam users and prepare them for New Gabeistan, his soon to be country. I already reserved me some nice place there *puts on the Steam armor* We are Steam, resistance is fun!
As long long as Gamer´s G(S)tate can trade with Gabeistan I won't have much reservation about that. ;)

On a more serious note: It is good to hear that the adults in the business want to take action against this. The carrot approach seems adequate here (for now).

Ah, too many things happen and I agree, it'll get worse on 4chan and similiar communities until it gets better. If they can get better.
They can, but they need to be whipped into line before you can lead them by the carrot. They are abusing way too many priveliges to follow you out of goodwill.

It is probably hard to get some overview of this unless you are making it some kind of professional goal. Or have a good detail memory.
