The Truth About Girl Gamers

So, Fellow Escapees, this is my first time posting a thread, but I feel it will provide a valid insight into both your minds, and the ever long issue of girl gamers. I keep reading these articles such as "Riot Grrrls Wanted" and "235. Vaginophobia" on the escapist website, and I just really do wonder about the Myth of the Elusive Girl Gamer, and what people think about it.

Personally, every guy I meet, whether whilst gaming online, or in the real world, either think the fact that I'm a girl gamer is too good to be true, or just don't take me seriously. Maybe this fact causes fewer girls to play online. Or maybe the girls just aren't playing the same games as you, so you don't realise they are out there! Also, I know one of my female friends doesn't like using a mic online because people think she is a prepubescent boy :\ Also a lot of the girl gamers out there were probably introduced to it by their boyfriends. Just Saying. I just believe that there must be more girl gamers than guys believe there are, or who get given credit for.

The truth is, we are out there, but you probably won't notice us, because our gamertags aren't like "FluffyBunnyGirl" or "GirlPwnsYou" or whatever.. And I personally don't fit the girl gamer stereotype of Cooking Momma and Barbie Ponies, with Guitar Hero being a step up! I am an expert at guitar hero and play a range of Xbox 360 games from Left 4 Dead and Gears of War to Too Human and Fable. Hell, I've even spent 30 hours straight playing my Xbox like a deranged fool.

Basically what I wanna know is: why is there SUCH a fuss surrounding the topic of girl gamers; how elusive they are and such, and, girl gamers, I want your opinions on this because I know you know exactly what I mean.

I just really want to know what you guys think!

UPDATE: i honestly believe im a gamer who just happens to be a girl. and i agree with the attention seeking. it annoys me.

Because most boys who devote their life to games or regularly post on an internet forum are friendless virgins who can't wrap their minds around the idea that there are women that are equal or greater than them on the world stage, or they're just pretentious assholes (i.e. me) who want to display their knowledge of the hippocampus.

:Edit: For those who'll quote me, I don't give a shit if you don't like what I said. So save the whine.

They're really not all that elusive. Other than that, I don't think much about the subject of female gamers specifically (sexism in games and the gaming industry, perhaps, but...).

Would you be interested in <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Gamer-Girls>joining the group, incidentally?

Nerds are uncomfortable around women because they lack social skills, personal hygiene regimens and are generally unpleasant to be around. Video games are their domain, their sanctuary. Thus, when a woman is revealed to be a "gamer" in any capacity, the common nerdlinger's reaction ranges from "immediate lust" all the way to "distrust/disbelief/outright fear or hostility".

A stereotype to be sure, but it's sadly still pretty apt. Gaming's becoming more mainstream, yeah, but the ones who are sounding off about girl gamers the most are generally the gamers who are still stuck in the past.

On that note, I love making blanket statements and my girlfriend's favorite zombie is the Spitter. Good day to you.

Normally there isn't. Every month or so some new female blood trickles onto the escapist and raises the horse of female gamers from the dead. Like for example YOU!

I like girl gamers because (in my experience) very few of them fit into the "annoying asshole" category, whereas tons of otherwise intelligent guys still manage to do so. Obviously (as in real life) the females amongst us can be as whiny, bitchy and annoying as the males but I seem to encounter that much less in the gaming community. That said this is only my experience, so probably isn't a truism everywhere.

I do also think that the whole "omg omg a girl!" phenomenon is mostly a myth, at least in any community where everyone is over the age of 13. Maybe 5 years ago people thought it was still funny to be completely sexist and come onto anyone who was female, but not really anymore (certainly not at any of the forums I frequent). In fact a lot of the time the only people making any sort of BIG deal about someone being a girl are the girls themselves

I swear. At least half the female gamers on this site make a thread about female gamers within their first 50-100 posts.

Anyway, as for your question. Girl gamers are a plague on the gaming world. They whore it up for attention all the while claiming not to and then complain about how females are represented in games. The world would be far better off without them.

However. Gamers who just so happen to be girls are fine. Those who just game without feeling the need to draw attention to the fact. Even in a round about way such as this.
When I jump online, I do not want female gamers. I just want gamers. Whatever it is you are packing in your panties is best kept out of the conversation.

As for why guys make a fuss. Because A) They are sad pathetic losers and B) The girls force a fuss if one does not naturally occur.
Excellently put. I agree with every word.

For NeutralDrow : Why do you feel the need for a girl group ?

a. It it the "whoring it up for attention" mentioned above ?
b. Saving planet ?
c. We girls have to stick together bla bla bla bullshit bla bla bla ?
d. Other. Please specify.

Like the en mass of 'favorite or BEST EVAR' threads are any better.

Okay, Really, we're not all that special, we used to be, I wasn't introduced to gaming through a boyfriend or any such nonsense in my teens, I was stuck on a Sega when I was 4, it produced a monster and the rest is history, nurtured through my incompatibility with the rest of my female peers and Neighboring Nerd-friend with many a console.

Most guys don't care. If you meet ones that do, they're usually extremely socially maladjusted anyway. If someone accuses you of the prepubesant boy line, Flirt. Make the idiot really really uncomfortable.
Don't get flustered. That just meants they win.

I don't normally care about the fuss, or bring up the topic of gender that often. I'm quite happy to be genderless in most discussions and be judged on my interests and what I've said rather than what I am (with a few exceptions).

There is a fuss around the topic because people keep feeding it in various ways, when most people know that there are female gamers. So what if some of them are quiet about it? Most of the time there is no reason for them to saying anything regarding their gender unless they want attention. Why should they bring it up if there isn't a decent reason for it?

*Incessant whining*

OT: I've never played a girl online I don't think* (not one with a microphone at least), but more girls at school seem to have an Xbox or whatever (usually due to a little brother) and sometimes mention they go on it occasionally.

And those that don't are still aware that virtually every boy in school plays CoD, so if they bring it up for whatever reason, I'll just say I play that.

I'll never tell anyone that I play Dragon Age: Origins - I mean, if there's a game name that's going to get you laughed at (besides Infinite Undiscovery or whatever it is) it's Dragon Age.

*[small] There was this one time I think, but I could never work out if it was an American older girl (late teens - early 20s) with the whiniest voice you ever did hear, or an American 10-year-old boy.[/small]

Yeah, we just don't stand out. I'm a tomboy; no one know's I'm a girl unless I tell them. Occasionally they don't even believe me. I really hate shooters, but not for "girly" moral reasons. I just like to avoid games with bland colorless enviroments, hideously unattractive male protagonists, casts consisting entirely of screaming douchebags in uniform, & I have shitty reflexes. As far as I know, we girls are more attracted to RPGs.

I find that girl gamers "clamor" for attention in the hopes that developers will recognise them & make games aimed at them...but that's where the real slap in the face comes in. They'll just give us childish dainty toned-downd mocks of the things that drew us to gaming. I don't even complain about how women are presented in games, because they're as BS & phony as the macho idealist Joe Everyman presenteed in the same games, that are like about all of 10% of actual men I know.

I'm tired of every Girl gamer acting like they're the last of their kind, demanding special attention. When I meet a girl gamer on LIVE she goes 'betcha never seen a girl before, oh I pwned you, you got Pwned by a girl!" While she's wearing her obnoxious pink spartan armor and the gamertag XxCutieGirlxX.

OP: There is such a fuss surrounding gamer girls because the gamer girls aren't letting it go. They like the attention.

People still get surprised by girl gamers? All of my friends are girl gamers for crying out loud. The only times i get surprised by a girl gamer is when she shouts that i got killed by a girl every time she manages it. Its just annoying and only gets the response of...

"Yeah, well done, now STFU and play like the rest of us."

Say what you will about Girl Gamers, in my experience they are more tolerable than 75% of the male gamer demographic who act like immature douchebags.

I don't have an issue with girls that are gamers, because my own girlfriend is a gamer who enjoys playing MW and various shooters and other games like that.

The only time I have ever had a problem with a female gamer, is playing a free for all match in halo 3 a year ago. She was running around and every time she would kill someone, she would yell oh you just got killed by a girl, a girl beat you, etc etc. Then whenever she died she was saying oh your just killing me because I'm a girl, you hate girls, why are you killing a girl. And I've run into a few girls who literally, wouldn't stop with that. That's when I dislike playing with girls in games, when they make it literally all about their sex.

Anyone with two brain cells together has figured this out. This isn't some new exciting revelation.
