Okay, it only makes sense when you hit the blocks. Everything else is debatable.

I say that he does hit it with his head but raises his hand up so that when you beat a koopa kid you catch the wand. The animation team was just too lazy to give him separate jump sprites.

Well that completely discredits the theory of "mario must have severe braindamage" that's one less thing to not worry myself over
