The UK Top 10 Review

< Previous Week [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.372668-The-UK-Top-Ten-Review-22-04-12]

10. Train - Drive By
I'm disappointed in this song - Train can do so much better than this. I've never heard the words 'drive-by' used in this sense either, but maybe that's just me being all quaint and English?
That being said, it's got a good tune, if a little uninspired.

---
9. Nicki Minaj - Starships
Down one in the first week of having an official video, it's Nicki Minaj. Having a video just makes me dislike the song even more, she's like a grotesque parody of attractiveness, and I dislike having to watch her grind around in a parade of steadily more ridiculous wigs.
For more opinions on the song itself, please see all the previous weeks this song has sat in the charts.

---
8. B.o.B - So Good
B.o.B also drops one place this week with the latest in his line-up of 'lazy songs for good times'. It seems there are no more vocal talents on this week than B.o.B himself, which I like; though Airplanes and the like are great tunes, it's good to see a rap artist carry a hit on his own voice for once.

---
7. Gotye Feat. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know
This song appears to have outstayed its welcome with yet more people, as Gotye dropps one place further this week. Apparently there are people just discovering this - maybe those who've been hiding under a rock for the last 15 weeks or so...

---
6. Alex Clare - Too Close
Climbing ten places in its third week in the charts, this is the first song with a 'drop' that actually took me by surprise. I'd been experiencing a fairly dull blues-y guitar piece when the dub kicked in for a chorus of impassioned singing. It's an interesting experiment, but I'm not entirely sure it works as a song.

---
5. Jessie J feat. David Guetta - Laserlight
Unfortunately Jessie J fails to drop at all this week - presumably due to David Guetta's ability to back up her screeching with a halfway decent dance tune. Perhaps simply not my taste, perhaps just a bad tune.
[small]Fun fact: I found out Jessie Js fans are called Heartbeats in a radio show a while back, and remember thinking what a stupid name that was.[/small]

---
4. Conor Maynard - Can't Say No
I simply cannot understand how this has only dropped two places this week. Surely everyone who heard that this was in the charts simply thought 'Oh god, what is this? What have we brought upon ourselves?'
The tune is appalling, and he sings in a mixture of high pitched breathy notes and autotuned crap.
Ugh, no more.

---
3. fun. - We Are Young
Unfortunately this song seems to have lost some of the momentum it had shown in previous weeks, and fails to climb any places this week. I'm still finding it to be very much a grower as a song, and thought it'd grow on even more people as it stayed in the charts, but hey-hoh, three's not bad!

---
2. Calvin Harris feat. Ne-Yo - Let's Go
Newly in the charts, I think this song has been credited wrong. Harris appears to be very much in the Guetta role here, mixing a song for Ne-Yo. I think Calvin's done much better, and why on earth would you draft Ne-Yo in as the vocal talent - he hasn't got any! A poor song, even as a dance tune, and I can only assume this song has sold on a mix of name-recognition and sheep-style music-buying.

---
1. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe
Yup, it's still number one!! I think it's selling well in hitting two audiences at once - the young girls who'll like it for its unapologetically catchy hook, and the older teens who can buy it as an ironic statement.
Personally, I still like that video!

Hopefully see you all next week, and please leave your comments! I don't just do this for my own benefit!

As a heads up to anyone who does read these, this is probably going to be the last one. I'm not writing up a full chart rundown each week for the sake of 15 hits and zero comments.

the current UK top 10's lately have been disappointing.. even as an Australian .. Somebody I Used to Know NEVER appealed to me.. and i know that will probably get me deported. As for Carly Rae Jepsen in number 1... the song is ok at best.. but gets old very quickly.. her voice for me just doesnt do it.. its a bit .. annoying. I never really did get B.O.B much.. his songs never really appealed to me at all either.. hes a bit plain.. and i think Hayley Williams carried him through on Airplanes tbh. As for fun. the original song is plain as and nothing to be fussed about.. i think when Glee covered it.. i think that highly improved peoples views of the original song (i know this will probably get me deported too). And i totally agree with you on the rest.. ESPECIALLY Ne-yo how can people buy this? it reminds me of Yoko Ono kind of in the old days.. its just autotuned to hell and so terrible i cant listen to more then 1 minute.

Am I the only one who has trouble hearing what most modern 'singers' sing in their songs? All I hear are faint auto tuned mumbles, and people are calling it 'art' & 'deep, full of meaning'.
What utter bullshit is being made...

In fear of sounding like a teenager with bad taste in music, Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is actually... good. I mean, I usually hate chart pop like there's no tomorrow, but there's something to it that I really enjoy. Then again, it might just be her seductive look and the (not very) hidden sex schemes. After all, she is very cute.

You'll be sorry to know it's dropped from the top spot <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.374190-The-UK-Top-Ten-Review-06-05-12>this week then!
It's a pretty catchy pop song imo, and if you press previous a few times you'll see all my thoughts on it. It's lyrics are about as vapid as they come besides 'Gotta get my bowl, gotta have cereal' though.

Thanks, I quite enjoyed that! I'm already kinda over the song, though. I realized my sexual vulnerability biased me, and the verses aren't very good as you've said. Besides, I caught up on the lyrics basically saying "I can get any boy I want", which I find... unflattering on her part. But suppose it's still catchy, and she's still pretty in the video. Again with the looks, geez...

On another note, I couldn't bare to listen to more than a few seconds into the new top. *shudder* It was awful. So awful... Not to be judgemental, but my first thoughts were "whore, can't sing, attention whore". Yeah, the music industry isn't making up for its mistakes to say the least.

She's like the third in the line of Katy Perry/ Zoe Deschanel clones imo. Though not quite as identical as those two are!

I can't think of any reason it'd sell this well other than her recently revealed exploits. It's shaping up to be just as bad a number one this week though, so look out for that!!
