Derlan casually walked onto the beach, he had a stack of papers in his hand and greeted to Doctor with a seemingly warm smile,

"Ah Doc! Nice to see I have finally found you! Your papers good sir!" he jogged over to the doctor and handed him the papers, "Sorry it took so long, that monkey is a tricky one! Hey is that a tiger?"

Derlan shrugged and sat down beside Keil in the longboat, he put his arm around his shoulder and looked at the boys leg,

"Damn, sure is an injury you got there, ah well, not much to see on the island except for... trees and birds I suppose, you didn't miss out on much."

As Deslock left Rokya realized something he'd missed. She laughed at his poor attempt at humor and followed him up the stairs.

"Bout fucking time, people! We got shit to do today," said Deslock. "If there will be no further delays, lets get out of this smokehouse." All eyes met his and not caring if everyone was ready or not, he opened the door to the courtyard.

Deslock opened the door and drew a machete from his belt. That firmly in hand he stepped out into the courtyard, half expecting something large and dangerous to be there waiting for him.

In the courtyard was nothing but dirt and leaves. Okay, then.

Deslock tried to move quietly across the courtyard, stepped on a dry leaf, winced, and gave up stealth. He slid up beside the empty doorway that led to the clearing around the tower and peered around the corner. Nothing stared back at him: there was dirt and stone, swiftly giving way to vegetation. The jungle seemed empty, somehow. Deslock didn't see a single living creature.

"Looks clear," he said dubiously. "Let's go." He led the way out of the tower, moving fast and low, expecting at any moment to be attacked by something--a bird, a boar, a tiger, something. Nothing ever came.

Behind him, smoke rose from the ruined tower.

The Doctor looked over the papers which Derlan had returned with a feeling of intense relief. They weren't even stained--the words still legible, the ink still crisp. He slid the papers securely into his satchel.

"Thank you," he said to Derlan. "If you would pay me a visit once we return to the ship, I would greatly appreciate it...for the moment, though, there is much to do!"

Besides the attacking birds and ruined clothing this was turning out to be an excellent day for the Doctor. Beautiful weather, he had his papers back, and he had found a new pet--an excellent specimen, to be sure. Time to see how far his luck would go.

The Doctor returned to the jungle, not running this time, but at a reasonable stroll, following the marks he had carved into the trees earlier. He'd set his trap down around here somewhere...on this little path, perhaps? No, not this one...ah, here it was.

Caught in the trap was a rabbit, nose quivering nervously, hind legs twitching and scrabbling. It was in most ways an ordinary rabbit, except that its fur was a dark, glossy green. And its ears looked shorter than he recalled being usual--he'd have to get accurate measurements.

The Doctor lifted the creature and stroked its fur absently. "Interesting," he said. The rabbit wasn't particularly exotic, not exactly exiting, but it would do.

"Hey! Yeah, you! About fucking face, I don't want to be talking to the back of your head!"

"Sorry sir! Yes sir!"

Deslock had caught up to the sailors who had been following Garril, who looked both surprised and relieved: surprised, because they didn't expect to see the Expedition leader on their trail, and relieved because now they didn't have to figure out what to do. That was someone else's job now.

"Where's Rasput?" Deslock asked.

"We don't know, sir," said the sailor with the musket. "We were running behind him, because we'd stopped to deal with the tiger he'd killed--you may have seen it, sir--and we haven't caught up to him."

Deslock peered at the trail ahead, which ended abruptly in a cliff, dropping a good thirty feet to the water below. "Yes, I can see that."

"We think he may have fallen off the cliff, sir," offered one of the sailors. "He was kind of single-minded about the whole trailblazing thing."

"You don't say," said Deslock. "What the hell. He could use a good swim, I'm sure. A fall like that isn't about to kill him. Come on, we're wasting time."

He turned back to the Expedition members. "We were going to the beach, right? To try and figure out this whole smuggler thing? The cliff slopes to the left here, so I'm guessing there'll be a beach off that way, which is where they'll have landed. Let's go."

"Smugglers, sir?" asked one of the sailors.

"The place is called Smuggler's Isle," said Deslock, "and there's another ship here. You get three guesses as to who they might be."

"So that'd be that ship out there, right?" said the sailor, nodding in the direction of the sea.

"Yeah," Deslock said, staring out through the branches at the black-tarred ship, "that would be it." He paused to shade his eyes. "Is that smoke? Looks like they've got a little fire on board."

It was approaching the beach that they found the body. Or, rather, the remains of the body, as there wasn't much left of it. Someone had taken a living creature and rendered it down to this smear of blood, viscera and ragged bones. Things were just...missing. Most of the ribcage, for example, and the hands. The bones were recognizable as humanoid, but beyond that it was impossible to tell who or what this person may have been.

The bloody remains were stashed in the forest, just beyond the beach, which was covered in refuse and garbage. A fire pit still smoldered there, and bottles, empty wineskins and other rubbish were scattered on the sand. There were also bodies--animals, killed by blade or bullet or crossbow. Near the waves there were marks in the sand where a longboat had shoved off, not too long ago.

Of those who had been eating and resting here, there was no sign.

Walking slowly around the abandoned camp, Rokya paused as the grotesque scene burned into his mind. This was a first for him. He had never seen a dead human, and this mangled mess would forever haunt him as his first. He took a step back, feeling his stomach spurring it's rebellion, but he luckily kept it all to himself. His face still paled and his skin felt cold, but no one seemed to be paying attention to him with such a scene before their eyes.

More to distract himself than for any actual practical use, he searched the camp. He pocketed some cheap trinkets here and there, but left the near-empty wineskins. While searching near the mutilated corpse Rokya found an unusual set of tracks. They simply appeared and disappeared, as if one could fly.

"Hey, Deslock, you should see these tracks."

"Hey, Deslock, you should see these tracks."

"You don't say," Deslock muttered. "Tracks, on a beach recently full of people. I am fucking shocked." Nevertheless, he went over to see what Royka was indicating.

There were, indeed, tracks that appeared and vanished without warning or reason. Deslock, being more experienced at interpreting marks on the ground, noticed other things as well.

"Well now,' he said. "Isn't that interesting? Look, they even happen twice. One set here, by the body, and another set right here, just up the dune a little. And...hmmm."

There were more tracks around the body, though they were obscured somewhat by the footprints of frantic smugglers as they packed up and left. There had been something lying on the beach, there, and a set of footprints that had appeared and vanished without a trace. But then someone else had come and dragged whatever had been lying there away, down to the ocean.

Deslock shaded his eyes and looked out at the ship in the distance. He was sure he saw the twinkle of a telescope lens from the foredeck.

"What the hell is going on here?" he muttered, not for the first time.

While Deslock scoped out the ship, Rhee was focused on a shape that was bobbing in the distance.
"Man." She calmly pointed not caring if anyone else could see.

Rokya was squinting to see whatever the hell Rhee was seeing in the sea when he answered, One of the sailors was staring pointedly at him when realized the problem, "She asked which way it was to the fresh water, I simply told her that it's a lot closer to the tower than the beach." The sailor nodded and hurriedly looked away, ashamed of his assumptions.

"Deslock, it looks like there's nothing more for us to do here. And we've spent a lot of time on this rock already, maybe we should get those barrels filled and packed up?"

"Damn, sure is an injury you got there, ah well, not much to see on the island except for... trees and birds I suppose, you didn't miss out on much."

Keil looked at Derlan, brows raised.

"Injury? I am not quite sure what you are talking about. Unless you mean from that night, in which case yes, it really is quite an injury. I really do hope I recover fully soon."

He stared at Derlan.

"Had fun on the island? Surely trees and birds can't be all there is to this place."

"Deslock, it looks like there's nothing more for us to do here. And we've spent a lot of time on this rock already, maybe we should get those barrels filled and packed up?"

"What?" Deslock was barely paying attention. "Don't be daft, man. We just lost Rasput, and we still need to find Derlan and Jakob--with any luck they'll have made it back to the longboat by now, but I doubt it. And the bloody doctor, can't go losing the University's representative. I'd never hear the end of it."

He snorted, and gave a nearby carcass a vicious kick. "The fucking barrels can wait. We've got priorities here. Now, what the hell is Rhee pointing at? I can't see a damn thing with all this glare."

"Bah, I'm sure you're fine, your a young fellow, you will be healed and running around in no time!" Derlan stood up and did a dance to display the condition Keil would soon be in, "And as for the island, don't worry yourself, you didn't miss nothing. No gold, no jewels, no form of money at all! Psh!"

He waved is hands in the air in disappointment,

"I mean at the very least there could have been a chest of money or... something of value!" Derlan hung his head, "But no... just plants and animals..."

"I can't see a damn thing with all this glare."

"By the looks of our fucking track record, that'd be the carcass of another of your men!" said Rokya, venom rising in his voice. "Seriously, how many fucking men have died because of your little cruise? Let's see, there's Feron, Jacien Criv-"

"Shut the fuck up!" roared Deslock. "You knew what you were getting into when you signed up so don't you dare-"

"Signed up? I never signed up, I was never even invited! I'm just a thrice damned merchant who ended up on the wrong fucking boat!" Deslock glared at him, momentarily at a loss for words, their first meeting making more sense as the pieces clicked together. Rokya continued, "So before I end up like this fucker," he gestured to the mutilated carcass before them, "I'm going to check on Keil, who's probably dying of boredom, or something else!"

As he turned, Rokya muttered something to Rhee and then stormed off down the path alone.

The angry merchant moved quickly in his rage, and stopping only once to catch his breath, he reached the beach in a little under a half hour. Seeing Keil alive and well, well as well as one could be for what the kid had gone through, his tensions eased. "Keil, it's good to see you haven't succumbed to the latest trend of this island. And Dr. Nexxado," Rokya eyed the tiger, "it seems you are ever more full of surprises. And Derlan, still conscious I see."

After a moment or two of pleasantries Rokya assured them, "The others are fine, there was just a disagreement that I'd rather not talk about. They'll come along eventually. So until then, what's the plan?"

Deslock watched Royka storm off, still glaring. His face seemed to have settled into that expression by default after the merchant had started shouting.

"Bloody hell," he said finally. "I never said this would be easy, did I? Don't want people to die, you should have stayed home and watched which ship you were getting on! We're going into the unknown, you hear me? People will die, just make sure it isn't you!"

It was at that point he realized he was talking to air, as Royka was no longer even in sight.

"Come on, gents," he muttered to the others, after a moment of enraged embarrassment. "Let's see if we can find everyone else. That fucker can die alone in the jungle, but I don't want anyone else to."

The Doctor had settled down in the shade with notebook and pencil, examining his latest acquisition. As he had observed before, the rabbit wasn't exactly new. Either the creature had branched off from the mainland species somewhere along the line, or some god just didn't feel like being creative.

He was putting pen to paper when Royka burst from the treeline. The Doctor waved to him.

"Keil, it's good to see you haven't succumbed to the latest trend of this island. And Dr. Nexxado it seems you are ever more full of surprises. And Derlan, still conscious I see.

The Doctor beamed, "Rokya! I've told you before, don't call me Dr. Nexaddo. It's too damn formal. The one thing I hate about the university is the formalities, it takes away from any task at hand." Nexaddo jumped up and began stroking the tiger's fur. "You like my new pet? Her name is Hunter." The scene was made rather strange by the fact that the sitting creature was taller than the standing gnome. Grabbing the harness the doctor swung himself onto the tiger's back and trotted right up next to Rokya. "As for Derlan, he has been an amazing friend, simply amazing--he returned my stolen research papers."

"" was all Rokya had to say as he ran past Rhee, whom by this point, was trying to hold back her laughter. Deslock ended stomping off also, probably trying to keep his cool which also left her in a predicament. She quickly measured the odds of Rokya doing something stupid and decided to join Deslock after witnessing Rokya scared of corpses. She followed slightly behind the other men as they walked along the beach listening to the sailors bicker about something mundane.

As they shortened their distance towards the smuggler's ship, it was getting clearer that something was burning on that boat. Being that it was made of wood, it probably wasn't a good thing, which convinced Rhee to make another decision. Her boots were the first thing off, followed closely by her jacket and anything else that would weigh her down.

------------------------------------

A loud splash broke the sailors' conversation as their eyes darted behind them, they found the pile of clothes which then led them to Rhee's head bobbing in the water.

"Um Deslock, we might wanna stop. One of your crewmen is doing something crazy again," he said pointing at and watching her destination nervously.

------------------------------------

It took about ten minutes for Rhee to swim the distance with her legs doing most of the work. She swam behind the boat seeing that the anchor was still down leaving her an easy climb to the top. She was hesitant to raise herself over the railing, scared she would be greeted by steel. She waited another moment or two before finally jumping up.

Deslock stared after Rhee as she swam out to the black-stained ship. "Hey!" he shouted after her, "get back here! I'm trying to gather the Expedition back together again--why the hell do people keep splitting off on their own?"

It didn't take long for him to realize she couldn't hear him.

"Bloody hell," he said, running his fingers through his hair. "What a day."

_______________________

The first think she noticed was the smell. The ship stank. All ships do, with tar and wood and salt marking every seafaring vessel, but this one smelled...sweet? Like flowers, or too much perfume.

Rhee peered over the rail at the deck of the smugglers' ship, not quite understanding what she saw.

First off, there was the pair of men holding the captain hostage. That was weird. They were dressed like ordinary sailors, but cleaner, and with better weapons, which they were holding pressed against the captain's throat. Before them stood another man--well-dressed, with a face like the back side of a mountain. That man held a long knife in his hand, and stood utterly motionless. The confusion of the two men holding the captain suggested that he had been still for some time now.

There were few sailors paying attention to the tableau on deck. There were maybe half a dozen men clutching smoldering matchlocks and rusty cutlasses, glaring warily, but everyone else was rushing to put out a fire that seemed to be below decks. Smoke streamed out of the hatch. It wasn't the billowing, dark smoke that would indicate the ship was being gutted by flame, but it was enough to be worrisome.

No one even glanced in Rhee's direction.

"Keil, it's good to see you haven't succumbed to the latest trend of this island."

"The latest trend? Are people going insane now? Oh, a little disagreement you say. On this Expedition? Never."

Keil smiled wryly. He shuffled around in the boat, making room for Rokya.

"Take a seat, tell me what I missed."

"Take a seat, tell me what I missed."

As Rokya moved towards the boat, his mind raced through all the evenings excitement, "The snake, the tower, the water-" He stopped in his tracks, quickly formulating yet another plan. As the final pieces clicked together in his head he realized that three sets of eyes were staring at him (the tiger staring at the crab). His face broke into a wide grin, "Keil, how'd you like to for a walk?"

After getting onto the deck, Rhee stayed low as she cocked her pistol and counted the heads she needed to kill. In an instant, she stood upright and pulled both triggers only to have them both misfire. The captors turned their attention to Rhee as the man on the right side of the captain barely blocked Rhee's initial swing. The captain, taking his rescuer's opening, tackled his other captor before diving over the railing of the boat. Rhee was about to finish her first opponent before a knife arm wedged in between the fighters, becoming her new opponent.

He was fast coming close multiple times with lethal slashes, while Rhee could keep up with the foot work, her hands were much too clumsy to match forcing her to back-peddle across the deck. She was eventually pinned against the sea by her enemy, blocking the knife wide for the final time. His open hand countered with a hook smashing into her check, he went to a second swing but Rhee managed to catch it noticing a beautiful blue stone ring. She twisted the hand and slipped the ring off, not even caring for the impact that hit her chest, she didn't even realize her feet had left the deck and that she was in the open sea.

She scrambled to find the surface and when she finally did, she found out that the neatly dressed men had found their guns and that they worked. A shot whizzed beside her left shoulder forcing her to go under again and she didn't surface until she was out of range. Her swim took a little longer for her to get back with her taking shorter breaths and not even wanting to try to sheath her sword in the water. Deslock was the first to greet her as she clawed onto the shore, she tried to smile but her face was already swelling.

"Rhee, what the fuck was that and who the fuck is this?" he roared as he pointed to the captain, once again held captive. She shrugged not wanting to try to talk being how hard as it is to begin with, instead, she shrugged as she went to go gather her stuff.

"Keil, how'd you like to for a walk?"

Keil began to get up, but paused in midair before sitting down again.

"I shall have to ask the good doctor here if he thinks I am able. So, doctor, may I?"

"So, doctor, may I?"

Nexaddo scowled. "Absolutely not," he declared. "I didn't even want you coming off the ship so soon after such a traumatic wound, never mind charging about in the jungle."

He sat back, arms folded, face resolute. "Not," he muttered, "that I think that will change your mind."

"Okay," said Deslock, "fine, I can deal with this. I will not start shouting again. I will be calm and rational and not demand why the hell one of my Expedition just swam out to a possibly hostile ship and got thrown overboard. I will not--for fuck's sake, Rhee, get your godsdamn clothes back on! The jacket first...at least you kept your shirt on, thank the gods for small favors..."

He rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. "All right. Does anyone here speak Illarym? No? Great, so our translator ran off and now we can't even ask her intelligent questions about what happened. That's wonderful."

Deslock glared off at the black-stained ship, trying to see if anyone was wheeling out cannons, or something.

"This beach probably isn't the safest place to be anymore," he said. "But hell if I know where else we might be able to figure out what's happening, and at the very least it's a big landmark that our missing people might stumble into. Any suggestions as to what to do would be welcomed. And Rhee, if you could tell me what the fuck just happened I would appreciate it greatly."

"And Rhee, if you could tell me what the fuck just happened I would appreciate it greatly."

Rhee slowly put on her clothes adding the ring to her hand, then turn to Deslock.

"Captain," pointing to there newly acquired man while pretending to hold a knife to herself. "Three..." she took off her ring and passed to Deslock, "Dress good? fought, lost."

She took a second and explained it twice for good measure before marching up to the captain who was probably getting tired of weapons being pushed against his head. She motioned to remove the weapons and pulled the man up.

"talk?"
