As much as I hate promising bands being overshadowed by less talented yet marketable modern bands, I find it equally tragic when I mention great bands/singers of old...and nobody knows who I'm talking about.

Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Harry Belafonte, James Taylor, Sting, Mandy Patinkin, Martin Page, Meat Loaf, Nils Lofgren, Pearl Jam, Phil Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughn...the list just goes on and on. 3 out of 5 times I'll mention these to my friends and I'll receive blank expressions and it makes me ):

Adversary and Engel. Those are true under appreciated gems. Mostly cause they're new in the business, but still. They're awesome.

Lately, I've been listening to a few good European metal bands, such as Edguy, Avantasia, Rhapsody of Fire, and Dark Moor, as well as Black Majesty who are Australian. Out of all of them I have to say Avantasia is my favorite. I love the symphony aspect. Reminds me of Symphony X (who are Italian).

Unfortunately, most people I talk to have never heard of any of these bands, aside from me mentioning them.

I know Alabama 3. Woke Up This Morning, correct?

I could spend all day telling you about bands that no one knows about that rock. It's a shame that so many talented musicians get constantly looked over when some of the worst musicians I have ever heard get constantly played on the radio.

I found it on the Internet, but still. PAIN is my favorite band ever, though it has a horrible name. It's a one-man industrial metal project written, performed, and produced by Hypocrisy frontman Peter Tagtgren and WHY DON'T MORE PEOPLE LISTEN TO IT?!?!

Look up "End of the Line", if only because it's the first PAIN song I heard.

PAIN is some great stuff, though I wasn't very taken with the most recent album.

MESHUGGAH \o/
Thats not really the point of this thread, its more bands that are completely unknown to a small group in their local area, usually unsigned. Meshuggah may not be a huge band but they are definetely bigger then any of the other bands here.
OT: A band in my area called Scream for Silence in my area are good, a bit to much screaming for my taste though. Another band called for our hero are good, just a bit to poppy.
Oh, i see.

Alabama 3 arent unknown, the did the opening theme for The Sopranos. Also, theyre awesome.

Anyways, two good unknown bands are The Big Tasty and The Expendables. Its almost impossible to find anything on The Big Tasty cause they broke up a few years ago but are still a very, very cool band.

Busstop Stallions. Great band with good bass, vocals, and a kick-ass brass section.

The Subways are a good English punk band

Maximum of Hormone is a heavy metal Japanese band. (They did the title theme for the later episodes of Death Note)

Quarter After is a good new band that sounds a lot like the Birds or Led Zeppelin

Of Montreal is just a psychedelic mess of pure awesomeness.

Tycho is a new age DJ with some of the most soothing music ever.

Deathmole. Fucking awesome. See, after listening to them on last fm I found out that they aren't a band, but one guy who writes this webcomic which I now read religiously. Some of the characters in the comic made a band called deathmole which is why he started making music under that name.

the Drive-by Truckers are an amazing band, think Lynyrd Skynyrd, but smarter, and far more politicized.

First death metal band Death and first extreme metal band Venom. Even though they are pretty well known they get little credit for what they did for metal music.

Three Australian metal bands that deserve admiration are Alchemist(Psychadelic Death metal by using indigenous australian instruments), Destroyer 666(Blackened thrash metal band) and Lord (Power metal).
