And last but not least: Angry Joe. There might be people who don't watch his show, but know him from TGWTG-Crossovers and maybe think he's a bit obnoxious and over-the-top, but I think he's a really good game critic. First of all, he tells you what he thinks. His verdict is always his personal opinion and not some obscure number born from strange statistics like "Story: 8.5 Graphics: 6.7 Gameplay: 3.1415926". Also, because of that, his verdicts are understandable and logical. I've often seen reviews where games with a score of 6/10 are treated like shit, even tough 60% should mean "above average". With Joe that's the case.
He shows he has no idea how to play the game, how can he be a good reviewer ?

I dont trust any of th, they either try to appease fanboys by loving the hyped up games, or they are idiots who cant even play the game properly so they *****. Or fanboys e. g "this game looks repetative so its ok, about a 6" *gives CoD 9s and 10s
You take ONE review and try to paint a PESONAL OPINION as plain wrong...

From what I've seen of him, I deduce he's good. I haven't watched the review for Alpha Protocol (and won't watch it now, maybe later) because I don't care about the game. If he gave it a low score, then because he thinks it deserves it. Because it's his opinion. Not more, not less...

I'm surprised no one's mentioned RedLetterMedia yet.

Any schmuck can make a review, but it takes a duo of B-movie makers to turn it into an extravaganza.

As far as review sites as a whole go, I agree most often with the crew at GamesRadar. Escapist hits in at a close second.

As for individuals, I really find myself agreeing with Jim Sterling and Adam Sessler. I would put Yahtzee in here, but I can't bring myself to call him a reviewer. He is, however, my favorite game critic by far.

The angry video game nerd is just a persona, his movie reviews are very straight forward and I agree with what he says most of the time. I normally just read multiple reviews to decide if something is worth it.

In terms of actually being a critic, it'd have to be Yahtzee, hands down, because focusing on what is bad about a game is how video game developers can fix these problems. Of course, I sometimes have trouble understanding whether he actually likes a game - For example, I was surprised when RDR was his 3rd best game of 2010, considering he spent most of the review abusing it.

In terms of being a likable guy, it'd probably CGR's Mark. My problem with him is, quite frankly, he's a very bad reviewer. People always talk about how good it is that he focuses on the good of things - Personally, I don't get how that reflects well on him as a critic. He's a reviewer who often gives the impression that he sets his standards extremely low, and if every game developer in the world attempted to make their games to Mark's liking, we'd be living in a piss-poor generation of games.

EDIT: And I think that Gamesweasel on youtube deserves mention too, because he always manages to tell you everything you need to know about a game in under two minutes. That's pretty impressive.

First of all IGN sucks.

Second, I don't really watch reviews. Sure I enjoy Yahtzee's beating on every game, but whether he likes a game or not won't change my mind on buying it. I usually find a LP of the game, watch a bit and then decide.

Susan Arendt. She's more informative than Yahtzee, while still being funny. I've never seen her have a "pet" game (where the reviewer fails to talk about the game's flaws because they like it so much *cough*Tito*cough*), like most other reviewers do. And I really just like the way she presents the good and bad of every game she does.

Now if only The Escapist will let her review some more high profile games.

If your playing th game incorecrtly, then yes your iew of it is wrong. Its like if somone tried playing through splinter cell as a shooter. Oh and considering they show you how to shoot in the tutorial he either ignored that (and then whined about the guns) or he needs to stick to fps reviews. If you dont understand the game then your review will be wrong, your oppinion of it will be wrong.
still, it's one review and your opinion about him doesn't change the fact that he so far made a good impression on me...

There's a guy on YouTube called DarkSydePhil (or DSP more recently), he does playthroughs of video games mostly but every so often he'd do a segment called The Hateful Truth where hw would give a true rating of a game since he wasn't being paid to write bullcrap. He gave Halo ODST and Epic Micky crap scores even after other sites put them 7 or 8 out of ten.

Most recently however he did a review of Duke Nukem Forever where he made the point that he understood why it wasn't a great game but it was fun for what it was. He gave it 6/10 but he still got a thank you from the creators of DNF for understanding how difficult it was for them. Link to his DNF review below.

I really like Jim Sterling and Yahtzee. People who still rag on Sterling should really listen to him on Podtoid.

But I tend to enjoy Destructoid's reviewers the best. Their contributors feel really genuine when they talk about games and you can tell that they pick and choose who reviews what according to each of their strengths (Dale North and Jon Holmes are most likely to review weird Japanese things as they really like that stuff, while Jim Sterling gets most big ticket items cause he's Reviews Editor, and so on)

And most of all, they squarely know what they are: pundits. They don't even come close to trying to be JOURNALISM. They're something of a Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart for gaming news.

An irk I have with sites like Kotaku, The Escapist and IGN is that it feels like their editors can't seem to decide whether they're part of a blog or part of a news organization. Some news items are by-the-book, no nonsense reporting affairs, while others - namely, any article dealing with games as the cause of violence, or art, or any big issue - are littered with so much of the author's personal views, and for some reason that hella bugs me coming from them. They should pick either 100% punditry or 100% news reporting (unless in editorials, reviews and features) and stick with it. It's a small quip, purely personal, but it bugs me all the same.

Me.

I always agree with my opinions. It's like some sort of unexplainable mental connection or something.

In my experience, reviews for video games simply aren't reliable, ever. Reviews for movies or books or music are a lot more reliable, as everyone will always be watching/reading/listening to the same thing; but in a video game it isn't like that. The player has an active role in it, meaning it's not just the person's perception of the experience that changes, but the actual experience altogether. A video game will always be completely different depending on who plays it and how they play it, and for this reason I don't see how you can possibly get an accurate representation of what your experience will be like by reading about someone else's.

For example, they might miss a vital piece of information which helps them understand a certain mechanic, meaning they struggle through parts of the game that you breeze through with ease. They might try a different way to solve a problem than you do, which might work better, or worse, but either way it will make their experience different to yours. They might just plain suck at the game - or, equally, so might you.

So what I've found is best is to read through reviews - lots of them - and look for the things that they keep bringing up. Look at some high reviews, and look through them to work out why those reviewers enjoyed that game. Then look at some low reviews and find what complaints they have, what things stopped them from enjoying the game. Then from there you can generally work out what the game is really like - whether the complaints come from a lack of understanding, or the recommendations come from a willingness to ignore flaws for the good bits - and decide which opinions you can actually trust.

It would have to be Yahtzee. He's the own reviewer whose name I actually bothered to remember.

He's just brutally honest.
His "honesty" is what I dislike most at times. Sometimes he just blows minor flaws out of proportion to try to be funny for the viewers when I find it just boring.

I like when he actually praises things he likes as well as shiiting on the bit he doesn't.
True, but I can understand why'd he'd be biased. He's greatly against formulaic AAA titles, which I don't particularly mind. But I've found that his criticisms of games (at least for the ones that I've played and an attest to) are usually spot on. There are probably fair criticisms from other reviewers too, but his reviews are the most entertaining also.

But yes, you are right. He either shits on a game all the way or gives a more balanced review. And for the games he shits on, it's explosive all the way.

I don't want to say a favorite because I like lots of reviewers for different reasons. Some of my top boys though, The Spoony One, The Nostalgia Critic, Angry Joe, and Phelous, all from TGWTG, and of course Yahtzee because i'm on the escapist and I mine as well dickride the home team champ.

I should also mention that no reviewer that has ever lived has gained my trust as far as taking their recommendation for games. I like what I like and have my own opinion TYVM.

Yep, Yahtzee is also my favorite reviewer. I bought bulletstorm based on his review of the game and loved it.
