Phobia as defined as an irrational fear or aversion to something, has always interested me as a discussion considering I think I actually have quite a few. And, I guess me making this thread on it sort of fits with the timing of Halloween and what not.

I'm a bit scrapped for time of making this thread, but one that I can share now is, when closing my eyes for too long, often in the shower when shampooing my hair, I always think I closed my eyes for so long that I somehow became blind in the process. Yes, I know, completely irrational and a bit stupid, but I still have it, along with a whole list of other little things of similar natures.

So I'd like to ask if maybe anyone else has these kinds fears. Maybe share why you might have them if you have the time.

I've got mild mycophobia. as in, it only extends to mold.

I can't even be in the same room as anything moldy. My nose has become extremely good at detecting mold. I can tell by the smell as soon as I step into the room. If I suspect that any food has molded in the kitchen, I run out of there immediately. I have to ask my parents to get rid of it; I can't handle it.

Also, it's really stupid.

I think I'll just repeat myself: "Is there a word for "the fear of being trapped in a bathroom that has no doors or windows"?"

Improbability aside (because there aren't too many circumstances in which I would find a way to be in a bathroom that has no doors or windows) that's been one of the recurring dreams I've had since I was young.

Another one is one where I'm being chased by a Muppet that looks like a cross between Ronald McDonald and a lion.

Not quite a phobia, but I don't like hospitals. I don't like boats either.

I think I'm developing a gamergatephobia, though. I'm not on this or that side. I just wish to avoid it, but it's pretty hard when everyone creates their own gg threads.

I have... mastrophobia.

And yes, I am serious.
I had to Google this one, I've never heard of it before.

OP: I don't know if there's a proper term for it but I have a phobia of cows, bulls and all things bovine.

They fucking terrify me. I've tried to rationalise my way out of it but when I'm around them I have an intense and immediate need to run away. I feel nervous in fields because I'm convinced one will just appear out of nowhere.

My Grandad was a cow farmer and when I was little he used to bring me around the farm and one day, I think I was four or five, one of the bulls put its horn right through my Grandad's calf (hehe) and it was horrific. On a separate occasion, I nearly got trampled by a cow because I was standing in-between her and her newborn calf.

So, yeah, nope nope nope.

Spectrophobia and Catoptrophobia, bonus points if you know what it is without googleing it. They're both pretty much the same though. It makes getting ready to go out a little weird though, but I get by.

not really a name for it and most people will play it off as camera shy but i have a phobia of being photographed.
I am not scared of cameras or being looked at or seeing my image but the point of being captured is terrifying.

I had to Google mine but apparently it's called Myrmecophobia (fear of ants). One or two of the little bastards is fine, but in large numbers I will rapidly remove myself from the room and most likely feel the need to have a long hot shower.

It started when I was younger... we were living in a tiny little flat and there was a whole dark chocolate cake that had been left on the counter all night. It seemed perfectly fine and after getting permission to devour a slice for breakfast I proceeded to begin cutting a slice out.

As soon as the knife was wedged in there was a mass evacuation of ants from the cake. As horrible as this was I might have been able to outgrow my disgust but my step-father then appeared (after presumably hearing me scream) and all he does is calmly shake the plate the cake is on and tell me that all the ants will then run off and I can have my slice. I remember picturing eating a slice of ant-infested cake and I wanted to gag. This experience apparently scarred me for life in regards to ants although surprisingly in regards to cake it just gave me a mild dislike, mostly aimed at chocolate cake.

Other insects I'm mostly fine with, it's just ants.
I do intensely dislike cockroaches too though.

I am completely shit-scared of squid and octopuses. They're fucking aliens, I tell you. There's no particular reason why, I just find them incredibly freaky and if I refuse to be anywhere near them (thankfully they had the good graces to live in the sea and keep out of the way). When I was younger my brother would occasionally say he'd seen one when we were on holiday, and I would refuse to go into the sea all day. Not that I necessarily believed him, but just the idea of tentacles grabbing at my legs was enough... Creepy little fuckers.

Every time I go to a pet store and go to the fish isle I think all the tanks are going to shatter and a poisonous fish will kill me somehow. Thus I always spend time in said isle and ponder why I think something so insane.

Fear of large bodies of water in video games. Not in real life, mind you, but just in games. This relates to the fact that bodies of water in games have sea monsters in them. Honestly, I cannot even do that one sea-serpent battle in Shadow of the Colossus and am barely able to wade in and fight the hydras in Dark Souls.

I have Acerphobia - the fear of spoiled milk. It's so severe that I can't drink milk from a container that I didn't witness being opened.

I don't know if these count as proper 'phobias' but I am deathly terrified of having my achilles tendon severed. My other fear is needles. Specifically, watching a needle go into me, or seeing it in me. I don't mind the sensation, or even watching other people get stuck, but it's gotten to the point where I need a paper towel covering my arm when I donate blood, because I've passed out a few times now upon seeing it.

I can't be the only one without a phobia. Bear in mind though that it's not a phobia if it just freaks you out but doesn't cause you severe panic or alarm.

I extended it to a commonly used definition of "irrational fear", alarm is debatable for many of these, but I'm guessing pain isn't.

That's fair enough but it wouldn't fit the clinical definition of a phobia. I know I'm being kind of a stickler about this point but I imagine that people with genuine phobias would be a bit pissed off with people flippantly claiming that they have an arachnophobia because spiders' legs freak them out a bit.
