Well the first games I really enjoyed were the Crash Bandicoot games but the one that made me a gamer was Aliens vs Predator and then Fallout 3.

Hmm, interesting question you pose here.

I have 2 responses. The first game I ever played that I can distinctly remember every detail of: Namco Museum on the Nintendo Gamecube, which I got when I was six.

As for the one to really show me all the possibilities of the medium, ummmm.... I'd have to say it's a tie between Halo, which I got for christmas when I was 10 (thirteen now) and Portal, which I got either one year before or after that, its kind of a fuzzy memory. Both showed me how truly creative people who create games for this medium can be. Portal also got me chanting "The cake is a lie" until someone finally slapped me across the face.

The first game I ever played was Pokemon Yellow on the Gameboy, but it wasn't until I played Super Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube that I really got into gaming as a medium.

Age of Empires Age of Kings, I mostly just cheated a bunch and never really played the game right, but I really enjoyed it. I had played games before, but that was the first game that sucked me in, and I'm not sure why it was either.

Most likely some really old game I tried out at a friend's house, like Onesimus. Another was Final Fantasy 7 at a cousin's place, fun times.

While it was far from my first game (I think Populous for Amiga takes that dubious distinction), Golden Sun for the GBA is what I believe got me into gaming.

It showed me that games can have a story with depth and weight and characters that I actually cared about. While it didn't really break the RPG mold at all, featuring your typical imminent apocalypse caused by mystical MacGuffins and you party of friends are the only ones who can stop it, it was my introduction into the genre and the deep world-building and strong characters really influenced the kinds of games I enjoy today: Namco's Tales series, early Final Fantasy, Baten Kaitos I and II, Zelda, pretty much any Shin Megami Tensei game, etc...

Golden sun was also the first game for me that blurred the lines between antagonist and protagonist.
And then if you played on through Golden Sun: Lost Age you realize the antagonists from the first game only set their plans in motion in order to save their village from being destroyed. What they were doing would not bring about the apocalypse, as you were told by your elders, but their actions would save the world. And you kill them at the end of the first game. Who's the bad guy now?

All-in-all, Golden Sun remains one of my favorite games. Not only for the childhood nostalgia but also for the fact that it opened my eyes to RPGs and indeed gaming as a whole.

first game ive ever played is.. er.. that mario on snes? i dont know the title but it has yoshi on it.

first proper favourite game (and due to the recent steam sale, still my favourite game) is deus ex on ps2. its a dumbed down version from the pc's one i can see, but still that experience you got with the dragon tooth sword.

a few years after deus ex i went into a pit filled with jrpg, shit mumorpugers, and anime. then i am introduced to oblivion. things just gets better from then. I got portal, the not shit prince of persia, and many other good games.

but i "really" got into gaming a few weeks ago when I admit to fellow escapists that I am a er.. how to put this.. "that person who pillage other people's boat in the seas" (yes i received several warnings for this).
not long after that the steam summer sale came, I bought around.. 70aud worth of new games and some games i've "played" before. Now, I vowed to only play the ones i bought and are seriously considering a career in video gaming as opposed to my attitude of "i want to play it but i dont want to make it" attitude from a few weeks ago.

Wow that was a kinda girly tl;dr

Diablo, I was about four or five so i didn't understand how to operate the stats back then, but i knew it was fun to smash fallen and skeletons and that Fire Wave was awesome. I wish I was able to say i liked it for some deep reason but i mostly just enjoyed the fact that i could kick ass in that world, plus it was easy to play thanks to everything being controlled by the mouse.

Until The Butcher growled "Fresh meat" and then I was afraid to fight it until I begged my mom watch my health and press the health potion hotkeys for me.

A combination of Halo and KOTOR. The Christmas I got an xbox was a great Christmas indeed. Though I'd always been interested in portable games and the old playstation having an xbox was what reintroduced me to the medium and helped me make the decision to become a game designer.

I can't remember ugh.

I only remember the PS1 classics like silent hill, crash bandicoot, twisted metal, gran turismo etc. It was when the ps1 first came out and I was really young.

Before the ps1 I was a pc gamer, playing that nascar sim and doom and hexen. Also, a few adventure games.

Let's see...

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 introduced me to the notion that doing stuff on a computer can be pretty fun.
Myst and Commando's showed me that it can also be freakin' hard.

it was either donkey kong 64 or banjo kazoie for first exposure to a videogame, Jak and Daxter for getting me into gaming (its fucking Jak and Daxter, need I elaborate as to why I came to love games?) and pikmin was the first game I owned and my all time fav till this day. must of played/beaten it a dozen times. I remember all the commercials from when I was real little, and was hooked just watch them, like some cool discovery channel alien edition. God I love that game, both 1 and 2. I pray at the nintendo alter for a 3rd (that preferably doesn't suck and ruin it for me?)
