Cool device albeit a little creepy. I wonder how many different Applications it'll be used for.....

Oh that thing, the thing that looks like a deformed strider and sounds like a colony of angry bees.

I'm just joking, it is cool and it would be terrifying as all hell to see an army of these things on the battlefield. Also it would be kinda awesome to see soldiers riding these things, it's probably not a sound strategy, but it'd be really really cool to watch.
Think of the psychological terror alone... "oh shit, the figured out how to control bees!"

As I explained somewhere on this forum a couple months back:

Walking tanks, regardless of the number of legs, are insanely impractical bits of lightly armored, low mobility, and light-payload targets.

In real world physics, just about any country's Main Battle Tank (American Abrams, Isreali Merkava, Russian T-90, UK's Challanger II, the German Leopard) is going to easily handle any mech, HERC, or Gundam you can come up with.

Building up means exponentially increasing weight, which greatly reduces payload, stability, and how much armor you can slap onto it. Since they walk, they have joints. Joints are ALWAYS a failure point, not to mention weak points in already light armor. You cannot arm them with heavy weapons systems (GAU-8, any MBT's main gun), which greatly reduces range and firepower. Because of their complicated drive system (which adds yet more weight, and more points of failure), they would have extremely complicated control systems that you would have to spend a great amount of time teaching to your pilots.

If it loses a leg, pilots cannot get out and crack track.

Really, the only plausible Walkers? Are really just armoured exoskeletons.

Also, robot is creepy. Also

I strongly believe that any military tech that is revealed to the public is at least five years old, possibly ten. To me, it makes no sense to reveal true cutting edge technology to the world, where it can be studied and potentially copied.
That probably doesn't apply in this case. It seems to me that a big engineering company could easily put together a robot with legs, and you only need to buy a pet dog to see examples of how four legged walking should be done. What is difficult is how to rig the thing up with sensors and program it to walk. That's not readily apparent from the video, so they aren't really leaking anything.

And it's less useful than a pony, which can move faster, go furthur than 12 miles, carry more, is probably more sure-footed and doesn't make a loud buzzing noise to alert the enemy. So it probably won't see active service. Future models might, but not this one.

okay I was just on here recently talking about DARPA'S work with Boston Dynamics on "Big Dog" which is a 5 foot tall quadrupedal vehicle meant to aid soldiers in combat.

seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1czBcnX1Ww&feature=BF&playnext=1&list=QL&index=1

well I just Found out that DARPA just gave Boston Dynamics a payload of money to make it into

"HUGE DOG" sketched and specified here :

This is looking really awesome! instead of metalgear I'm now more reminded of the "snow-walkers" from Star Wars
This unit will only carry 400 Lbs. Not quite a tank yet.

Its a pack mule and little more. its going to replace Jeeps and 2.5 ton trucks and provided some sort of logistical relief when you push into more rugged terrain which conventional vehicals can not traverse.

will this ever see any sort of combat options?
Out side of defence... No.

It is way too expensive and way too complex when you consider that something such as a 9mm bullet can easily disable it.

SIGINT explained in MGS3 why a walking tank is strategically flawed and here's why:

"Not only is making a tank walk on two legs a technical nightmare, but there's no point in making a walking tank to begin with. Putting legs on a tank would raise its clearance, increasing its frontal projection area. It'd also be less stable. Suppose the legs help the tank travel bad roads... I don't see the logic in that. Isn't that what treads are for? I mean, anyone who'd seriously consider making a thing like that has got to be a wacko."

He did say on two legs but the statement isn't inaccurate no matter how many legs you put on it.

okay, I know it's bit far from "tank size" and maybe hardly "truck size" ,but it has been designated to carry more than just simple supplies. it's meant to be a "walking platform" that can adapt to multiple terrains and climates as well as follow simple directions, such as "follow" and go to and it will have the ability to jump. swimming? not yet...

Why make an tank on legs, you say?

Where is the point of weakness for me to shoot it when it goes evil? All robots hve a weakspot right?

I am slighty creeped out.
It's okay, it won't go evil. Robots can only do what they're programmed to do, and will never become sentient.

If you don't believe me, take a computer science course. Seriously, the sheer number of things that can will go horribly wrong with your programs will castrate any sentient robot threat.

The problem with a walking tank isn't the ability, it's the practicality. Japan has been working openly on walking vehicles for some time, both for military and civilian outfits such as firefighting in open country where fire trucks can't reach. Walking vehicles have the ability to traverse uneven ground that even tracks can't get over(Which isn't very much, mind you). However, that's about the only advantage. They still fall far short in carrying capacity and overland speed.

OMG, something about little dog always creeped me out. It's like a headless demon from hell doing a little dance as it slowly trots towards you. Now that they are making it into a Metal Gear I think the terrorists are gonna poop their pants.

PS. I hope that 5x the size=5x the loud annoying buzzing sound.

that scared the shit out of me. the balance correction when the guy kicked it was unreal. also there wouldnt be a whole lot of point in covering this in armour, besides the fact it would rack up another 100 kilos or so of weight and it looks like it would be used (to me anyway) in bomb disposal, checking ahead of fighting groups in built up areas and in urban usage. i guess you could probably attach small artillery like mortars to it or large caliber remotely fired machine gun or rifles also strapping a transmitter to it and walking to whever you want to radio from....but i guess they already thought of that.probably.
