Well ... that was a trifle embarassing cracking up uncontrollably at work, when I'm meant to be doing something serious. But then I showed the manager, and he laughed to. That said I think i just collapsed one of my lungs. Couldn't this thread come with an official warning NSFW to much hilarity.

You know, this may be not so bad. What if the CIA take care of our troll/fanboy/general idiocy problem to some extent?

Of course, I'm not in support of this, but every cloud has its silver lining, right?

The cultural and behavioral norms of virtual worlds and gaming are generally unstudied. Therefore, Reynard will seek to identify the emerging social, behavioral and cultural norms in virtual worlds and gaming environments.
Jeez, in WoW? He'll be wanting a tour of Baghdad in no time!

Yes, they didn't censor, but most forums are filled with a bunch of whiny losers bitching that mom burnt their toast so they were late to work at McDonalds, at age 30. (This is the only forum I write to, can you tell.) Personally, I would love to see all bloggers declared Terrorists and shot publicly. Consequently, censoring the internet will make it BETTER...
I bet you're one of those people who thinks we should take all people with an IQ below 100 out back and introduce them to Mr Shotgun.

Personally, I think it's a good thing we have idiots on the internet. It's the same line of thinking that permits us to disagree with somebody's opinion but fight to defend their right to express it.

We may all roll our eyes when we see an idiot posting about their dogs, but you wouldn't want to censor them just because they're idiots. If you cull the idiots off the internet, you WILL throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I'm sorry if you were being sarcastic, I couldn't tell.

I couldn't find this funny. I find it very disturbing that the CIA would be stupid enough to think that you will find terrorists on WoW.

...I thought that everyone knew the Terrorists spend most of their time on Counter strike...ya know taking hostages and stuff :).

Well it does make sense when you consider the number of disaffected youths turning to online gaming as a source of escapism. Extremists thrive in an environment where the targets of recruitment are disconnected from their society, after all, it's how Hitler came to power after WW1.

The theory makes sense given the number of youths into online gaming not only in the Middle East but also in places like South East Asia, where Jamar Islamia thrive. So, the theory holds up. But of course, communism works on a theoretical level.

And of course, the likelihood of finding a level 60 paladin who secretly wants to bomb the US embassy are quite slim at best.

This made me laugh more than the topic itself ^^ Seriously, it's just too sad...

First off, a shout out to all the feds out there: Infidel! Muhammad Jihad!

Seriously, though, this news strikes me with equal parts unease and hilarity.

I was an level 59 paladin who secretly wanted to bomb some stuff up but my other brother deleted my character so I had something better to be mad about.

Dear god! Profiling online gaming behavior?! It will take them centuries, for god's sake! how can you profile a world where everyone's crazy? My guess is that they'll quit the profile idea and just label us all terrorists.
That's probably what they want to do anyway. The little conspiracy nut in me wants go on about how this is just another method of trying to gather intel on innocent civilians and monitor dissent.

Holy crap when did I become so cynical?

Your avatar goes perfectly with that statement.

Im not sure what tangable results the government think they are going to get from this.

"I was thinking on doing a Raid, wanna tag along?"
"Sure!"
"So uhhh....have you ever thought about y'know bombing a football stadium or posting some anthrax?"
"Uhhh....I guess I dont know"
"hehehe gotcha"

Another job well done.
