New users. They happen. Do you guys ignore them or are you a part of Welcome Brigade?

I consider myself a sergeant in this brigade as I remember my own experiences as a new user. It can be scary and had someone not linked me to the Posting Guidelines early, I might have been hit by mod wrath by posting a number of vs threads.

Anyway, if you are a member of this proud brigade[footnote]Our motto is "Protego quod rector n00bs" btw[/footnote] you will certainly have a quick reply to help new users.

Is it different every time or do you have a formula like me?

Oh hey, fresh meat a new user!
[HEADING=1]Welcome to the Escapist![/HEADING]

Stay out of the basement, give monthly tributes to the mods, don't be an ass and have fun! I will post links to articles you should read about how we do things here.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it here, I know I have :D

So, what are your first words with new users? Are you a member of the brigade or do you just let others do the greeting?

I'm kind of happy to serve the community by directing new users towards the posting guidelines and Lord Krunk's guide.

[sub][sub][sub]I might even start a user group if there isn't something similar in existence here.[/sub][/sub][/sub]

EDIT:

Update for myself... No one will ever see this but me I think...

Weclome to the Escapist. Wipe your feet on the mat, have a drink, do not troll, do not flame, obey the rules, join the Asylum or that nest of villainy PRIATE and talk to Aylaine if you want advice or a shoulder to cry on.
Sounds good :D You a member of the brigade or just a helpful civilian?

Every now and then I drop into one of those threads to say hello, but I don't have a set message that I give them.

I lurked the forums for quite a while before i decided to make an account, so i read the all the rules before making my account. Anyways, I don't really greet new members, i always leave the job for the professionals. Only once i said "Welcome to the Escapist!" and that was it.

I usually tell them that someone will be along with a proper welcome message shortly.

And inform them about Hubilub's desire for virgin sacrifices.

I used to dish out welcomes like cheap cigars. Now I kind of just treat every poster the exact same.
Hell, as far as I know, they could be ban-jumpers or long time lurkers. If I welcomed those guys, I'd just look like an idiot.

If I spot a new user I welcome them, usually by mention of the basement and to RTFM (or in this case Use the Frickin' Searchbar).

I like welcoming new users, it's important to make people feel like they can fit right in here.

Just a simple "Welcome to the Escapist." Gets the job done well enough.

i dont feel ive contributed enough to be part of 'the welcome wagon' group,

hence a welcome from someone with so few posts compared to others wouldnt be as meaningful

Been here since may, only got serious with posting and replying since about 2/3 weeks ago. before that I was just watching doraleous and Associates and Zero Puctuation. got 117 posts today... give it some time and everybody will shove into their little spot on the diner table. Watch out for the appetiser though, FIRST! pudding can be quit banishing.

Done it maybe once, but...
1) I'm not really known at all on the escapist anyway, and
2) There are already dozens of people ready to jump up and say "HI, WELCOME, BASEMENT ETC."

I don't generally give them a welcome, unless it's specifically a "Hi, I'm a new user" thread, then it's just a "welcome to the escapist" or something similiar.

Oh I remember being new here, its actually pretty tough switching your demeanor from one you use at any other forum to one for this one. I got quite a few disciplinary measures early on. So I would consider myself part of the welcome brigade since I like to give fair warning to all the fresh meat about the high standards here.

Well after my first post here, I got one greeting warning me of the trolls...and the basement!
I've never had any greetings on all the other forums I use, so I thought it was a nice touch.

So hello Escapist (again) how y'all doing?

I lurked a little while first until I finally found something that I just couldn't resist voicing my opinion on, but I honestly don't remember if I got a welcome or not. I usually leave the welcoming to people who are pros.
